Before Lamy 2000 took the stage in the spotlight, Lamy 27 was.

I got this one from a collection that I acquired last year. Metal cap, probably rolled gold and the engraving on the barrel just say Lamy 27, no letters following the number.

When I first handle it, it feels light, but as I use it to do the sketch (and some writing prior to that), the pen feels more "sure" as the time goes.
It's one of those pens that is difficult to describe, but once in a while without even realizing it, I stopped writing and looked at the pen thinking "Cool!".

I love piston fillers, especially German ones, and this Lamy is no exception. It is supposed to have a lot of ink capacity, and the ink window is clearly visible, so I can control how much ink I want to fill the pen with.

How's the nib?

The nib is partially hooded, not as much as Parker 45 though, so you still can see the breathing hole. Unlike my other German piston fillers from this era, this one writes very very fine. I would classify it as EF.

The sketch is of an adobe style house.

That's a nice looking pen. I'd be less keen on an EF nib, but otherwise it looks like a nice writer. :)

Great drawing and a pen I'm not really familiar with. Looks a good pen.

I should have compared it to the Lamy 2000 instead of Parker 45 on the subject of "half-hooded"-ness :)

You are right, the Lamy 27 is a nice pen.
I think yours is a kind of Lamy27/32.

What disturbs me a little bit is the round end of the barrel, I know them with a straight end like mine.
But I’m not a real expert on all Lamy versions, so they might vary depending on the production years.

The 27/30 has a plastic cap.
The 27/31 has a metal cap.
The 27/32 has a gold plated metal cap.

I also own one, a 27/30

Quick lookup result, there were many 27 versions Over the years.

Christof posted a overview some time ago:

So according to this I think yours is a 27/n R.

I don't think that is the case.

This pen doesn't fit into one of the variants in the chart because it has a slip cap but doesn't have the "L" on the cap finial.

Yes, it's really nice, I've used it for a long time.

Yes, a really nice pen. My father had one with a OM nib, a friendly pen with more line variation than my Lamy 2000 OM.
Btw: The 1970s Lamy pen pouches are great... why? Nice medium textured leather, timeless design somehow.

Just got one of these myself...a cheap way to get a reliable, piston-filling oblique-ish german nib. Nicely made and more attractive than I expected. The cap is threaded but comes off in a 3/4 turn and secures very nicely (better than its Pelikan 400 contemporary).

According to christof's guide, mine is also a mixture of parts, as the cap ring is broad but the nib is hooded in a similar fashion to an aurora 88...

Nice pen Will!

The body seems to be a very early one like this:

and the cap a later one like this:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51202154572_05b09cef7e_z.jpg

But who knows, maybe there was a variant in between the first and the second...? How does the piston knob looks (according to the chart above)? I mean, is it an integrated part or is it just a blind cap?

PS: I also have one of these in daily use.

It is a blind cap...the piston knob itself looks amazingly like the end of a modern converter....

Yes, this is a strange system. It only can be removed by a special tool:

but this type of piston existed already before the 27 was introduced.

I thought the barrel felt like it might have metal in there!
Did the Artus-branded pens have the same mechanism?

Nothing older than Lamy 2000. What‘s the problem with your pen? May be I can help.

Great pen indeed. I do have a 27m (slightly larger) and I must say it's a better pen than the 2K IMHO (even if I do feel tenderness toward the 2K). The piston takes a lot of ink (2ml as an educated guess) and the nib is just amazing (but on the stiff side). It's the pen I always have with me in my planner and it's always a joy to use it with the Tomoe paper that Hobonichi is using.

I take the opportunity to thank Christof, I learned a lot thanks to his passionate work, and his pictures are always a delight to look at! Danke viel mahl!
