Sailor Rei Urushi Wajima Tamenuri is a special and limited edition pen that was released in late 2019/early 2020 as part of Sailor's Bespoke Collection. Dealers who received any (and not all Sailor dealers did) received very few, and most sold their small allotment almost immediately. The pen represents a beautiful example of Tamenuri art. It combines the pen artistry of Sailor with the hand finished urushi artistry of Masanora Sumi. Though my pictures look rather dark, perhaps almost black, the pen in person is a very nice warm red-brown with the vermillion intermediate coat visible at the cap edge. The depth of the urushi finish is a thing of beauty.
The pen features a Sailor 21K gold nib in H-MF width. It is cartridge converter filled. This release has the added benefit that unlike most other Sailors, it does not have the long metal housing that obscures view of the converter and the ink level in it. It is a sizable pen, measuring approximately 150 mm long capped and 135 mm uncapped with a barrel diameter of 14.2 mm. I have included a photo of the pen next to a Montblanc 149 in the photo set below.
The packaging is exquisite, with a lovely ribbon tied velvet lined pawlonia wood box, a very nice pen kimono, a Sailor cartridge, a Sailor polishing cloth, and enough documentation to satisfy almost anyone.
The pen is Near Mint and had been extremely lightly used. It writes very nicely as can be seen in the writing sample posted after the pictures.
