Hi all, I just wanted to post some pics of one of my grail pens that finally arrived :)

The color shifts from a deep turquoise to a funky greenish color, depending on the light and the objects surrounding it.

3659

The nib is a rhodium-plated soft fine. It's stiffer than my unplated SF, but still is nice and bouncy. I actually prefer this nib for jotting quick notes.

3660

When I ordered this pen, I was torn: clip or no clip? I'm glad, for this pen, that I went clipless. The twisted facets are fantastic, and I don't have to worry about the pen rolling off a table or desk. The full-sized Decapod is longer than I thought (I really like the Piccolo and Mini Decapods), but it's very well-balanced and I love writing with it. :)

Stunning!

Looks like you could fall into that pen - the color and finish is just so rich and deep.

A true masterpiece.

I almost forgot; here are some shots under mixed natural and fluorescent light, against a more neutral background:

It still reads (to me) as a lovely, lovely aquamarine/turquoise/blue-green. :)

A truly decadent decapod!

What's the "official" name of that color... should anyone else want to try to order one?
Thanks

boy is that nice. wow!
How long was your wait for the pen? was it mainly shipping or did you have to wait for its manufacture also?

quinden
June 28th, 2013, 07:12 AM
tenney, this color is ao-tamenuri; when I ordered it, the Nakaya employee called it the "new" ao-tamenuri, but I don't really know the difference :) - there is a link to a pen very much like mine on nibs.com: http://www.nibs.com/nakaya-cigar-decapod-twist-ao-tamenuri.htm

manoeuver, I ordered my pen in September; the original 'due date' was in December, but they decided it wasn't up to snuff and started all over again. My understanding is that only one person is lathing these pen bodies (by hand) and there is a pretty big queue of work; the application of the urushi is also a time-intensive process, as you have to apply a single layer at a time and then let it cure for quite a while before you can apply another. The shipping was actually really quick!

It was called 'new' because it's a new colour that wasn't previously available, I think, rather than a re-hashed version of ao-tamenuri.

I keep coming back to drool over these photos. I think the ao-tamenuri Decapod Twist will be my next Nakaya...

tandaina

Yeah, new color. I ordered one in Janurary, expected date was June but they now say end of July. It is not a process for the impatient!

quinden
June 28th, 2013, 08:08 AM
tandaina, you are 100% correct :)

did you order a decapod twist, or are you getting a different model in ao-tamenuri?

tandaina
June 28th, 2013, 08:39 AM
No, I ordered a piccolo (love the look on the twist though) with gold fish clip, and some customization (left up to the artists discretion) on the section. Whole theme of silver moonlight on dark water. I'm on the edge of my seat to see how it turns out. WANT IT NOW. But it has to go to nibs.com first for the nib to be turned into a italic. Trying to be patient. Trying really, really hard.

Oooooh, that sounds awesome! I bet it will be fantastic; I've been lusting after a Nakaya with a snake roll-stopper for a while, but I have put off ordering it.

Lisa, thanks!

Earthdawn, I really want a snake roll-stopper - I am going to ask Classic Fountain Pens if they would be willing to handle shipping one of my Nakayas back to Japan so that its clip can be replaced by the stopper of my dreams :)

Right you've done it now - I will have to order one! My challenge is that I am yet to find a Nakaya nib that I've really grown attached to. I like a flexy nib with a little give and variation; any suggestions? And I think I need a clip - for pocket, not desk.

quinden
June 30th, 2013, 07:51 AM
Hi youstruckgold!

Depending on your nib width preference, I would say try an unplated Soft Fine or Soft Medium. I have two unplated SFs, and they are both more flexible than this one. If you order through Mottishaw, he can increase the flexibility as well. You can get a Twist as a "Writer" - this just means with a clip. I have 3 of the Mini Decapods with clips, and I really love them!

reprieve, I have a heki-tame, aka-tame, and kuro-tame. I have a couple of photos, but they are not great. I'll try to take some better ones, but until then, these are from my Instagram (not a true group shot, unfortunately):

Josh, I'm digging back into FPGeeks after a long break from said forums... and here you are!

Another beautiful Nakaya added to your collection, ay? Very nice. As you know, I got to see a mutual friend's Naka-Ai in ao-tamenuri. It's very alluring. The color at times seems very green, and in other light very blue.

How is that Decapod Twist in your hand? I do love facetted pens!

Hi Julie!

Beautiful indeed :) The ao-tame is exactly what I was hoping it would be.

The Twist is heavenly in the hand. I was worried about the length, but it carries its weight (lightly) towards the front - my previous long pens (MB 149, Pelikan M1000, Danitrio Sho-Genkai) all had more weight towards the rear and just didn't feel right in my grip.

Glad you are back!!!

That makes sense. The other 3 would have the piston weight in the back, too. Glad the Twist is "heavenly." Nothing like a pen that feels great to use!
