I recently acquired this vintage Sheaffer Mechanical pencil. It appears to be nearly new. It is slender, about 1/4" diameter and it is 5 1/8" in length. My question is; is the cap removable? Is there an eraser beneath the cap? This cap is difficult to remove. I do not want to damage the cap by using too much force. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

On the vintage Sheaffer mechanical pencil I have the cap pulls off and there is an eraser inside.

I have found several Sheaffer pen and pencil sets in factory gift boxes with a well used pen and new-looking pencil. I conclude nobody cared to use the pencils. Intact erasers, lead looking unused, needing break in. I used some of them for crosswords.

The reason the Sheaffer pencils were unused is because they used an Autopoint for the reasons one uses a pencil.

You should be fine just pulling a little harder on the cap. Things tend to get stuck together if left alone for fifty years.

To all who answered my question regarding the pencil, I say Thanks. It took some pulling and tugging. Eventually, I was able to separate the cap from the pencil. I found an eraser that is still soft and pliable and beneath that some spare leads. The mechanism for advancing the lead works fine. All is well.

You are welcome. I love it when threads come full circle. Enjoy your pencil. I use one from the same era that my grandfather received when he graduated from tech-school. He used the pencil more than the pen, which had an accountant's nib on it.

I am new here and am having a poke around and found this thread - I have a vintage gold sheaffer pencil and I never knew the back part pulled off!! I just had a look and found the eraser! Exciting times :)

To make matters even better, sometimes the eraser comes out and extra leads are stored inside too.

For stuck joints in pencils, etc., I apply a tiny bit of WD-40 or the like around the seam, using a toothpick. Then I apply gentle heat, using one of those microwave hot/cold packs. Section pliers and/or a rubber sheet for opening jartops can also help. (Once it's loose, be sure to wipe off the lubricant.)

Also, Autopoint made several styles of pocket knives that I have been able to find. Good metal and easily sharpened.
