Hello folks,

Here is part two of a two-pen order I have just completed. This pen is done in a 'Double-Taper' style, with the diameter-matched midsection, but with cap shorter and wider than the barrel at the ends.

The pen is made from amboyna burl, my favourite exotic wood, sealed inside and out with thin cyanoacrylate, then finished with eight coats of medium viscosity CA, polished to a hard gloss. The nib section, as well as the threaded parts of the cap and barrel were created out of black acrylic. The nib is an 18K JoWo fine nib, and the fill system is (surprise, surprise) cartridge/converter.

As Cedargirl says 'beautiful'.
Talk about exotic wood. Did you have to stain it or that the natural colour ?

Ill add that it is gorgeous !!!

The finish on the wood is amazing.

I like it being clipless as it keeps the lines clean and simple leaving nothing to distract from it's beauty.

The wood is actually quite a lovely colour naturally. No stain at all.

Very nice Ken. I really like how the black acrylic section stands out from the rest of the pen.

Thanks for the kind comments - much appreciated!

Do you turn the sections yourself?

Yes, I turn all my own nib sections. No kit parts were used in the making of this pen :-))

Beautiful pen! Gotta love that amboyna burl. Fantastic finish on it as well. I tried a CA finish on one of my oblique holders...ended in disaster so I was always afraid to try it again. Which viscosity do you use for a glassy finish like this?

Thanks! I am often able to get a glossy finish right at the surface with a few coats of soaked-in thin CA. However, for a good thick glass-finish, I usually follow up the thin CA with about 8 coats of medium viscosity CA, sanded down and polished.

Cheers,

Ken

KenKen, you may try the tru oil which can polish to high gloss. I use it to finish my electric guitar.

Thanks for the tip, John. I have used Tru-Oil quite often before in making fly fishing rods and parts. Great stuff. The only issue I have had with it is that it tends to cloud up or soften with long periods of handling such as is the case with a pen.

Great looking shape and I noticed the wonderful grain orientation to complete an impressive pen.
