View Full Version : What paper/notebook/journal are you waiting on?

We have the "What pen are you waiting on?" thread, why not one devoted to paper/journals/notebooks?

I'll start. I have been bitten by the vintage paper bug recently and that led to journals, diaries, notebooks and the like. I first bought a couple of pads of vintage airmail onion skin pads by Premier. If you received a letter from me recently, the paper may have been from these pads:

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2825/9161992960_83ac963f40_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivan_romero/9161992960/)
Premier Air Mail Writing Tablet (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivan_romero/9161992960/) by IvanRomero (http://www.flickr.com/people/ivan_romero/), on Flickr

That lead me to looking for vintage journals. I found one that looks to be an insurance agents promotional item from 1960.

Just arrived. Promotional #vintage desk #journal from an insurance agency. Blank and unused. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivan_romero/9201119523/) by IvanRomero (http://www.flickr.com/people/ivan_romero/), on Flickr

and the inside cover:

This is the latest to come in, and most interesting to me is a John Walker Back Loop Diary. The pencil sits in a sheath made into the spine of the book. This dates from 1932. The back cover has an insurance application for purchasers of the diary. Those that follow me on Instagram have probably already seen all these pictures.

Well... I just ordered two new noteboos, both A5 (or so).

The first one is a Rhodia, hardcover, black, dotted. And the other one is a Leuchtturm 1917, same specs.

Since I have been using Moleskine's I think it's going to be a good way to try new papers and brands.

Thanks!

Very, very sad. I had my share of problems with these sellers at Ebay.

It seems like a "russian roulette"... sometimes you get it right.. sometimes don't.

The two notebooks I'm waiting for (the Rhodia and the Leuchtturm) I asked a friend who is travelling through Europe to bring them to me. Cheaper and safer!

Well, three bad transactions out of over 300 does not seem like bad odds to me. At least I have the option to open a case with Paypal/eBay now. I will most likely get my money back on this one. In the mean time, I ordered a 5"x7" padfolio for my wife. :D

Not bad odds at all!

For me, in over 100 transactions... something like 10 or 12 cases. Got my money back in half of them. :(

But I'm a optimist! Positive mental attitude always! And I just can't stop buying thing on Ebay... lol

I do hope that you arranged with David to have him do you up a journal from your paper purchase. My 500 page journal is wonderful, and it sets inside my Irish/Gaelic hand tooled journal cover so nicely. Not too sure when but perhaps the balance of my tomoe river paper will be converted in to a smaller breast pocket friendly notebook for my blazers.

Will you be able to share what it looks like at an upcoming Toronto Pen Posse meeting?

I have several people I write to that the letters get really long--thought I would try to write a letter in some of these. Tsubame from mymaido, apica/marumen/kokuyo from jetpens. Thin notebooks, like you would take a handwritten test in. And I also got a few Field Notes although I doubt that pocket size is good for letter writing.

Hello!

Just received the two notebooks I bought from Goulet's. I ordered a Leuchtturm (large - A5), dotted, a Rhodia Webnotebook (A5, dotted as well), and 4 Rhodia pads (2 dotted, a 2 gridded).

For my surprise it arrived in less than 2 weeks! Usually it takes more than a month for a package that size and weight. This time I felt Brazil is not so far away from the rest of the world as I used to think. :)

The "Goulet packing method" is amazing, all the goods were intact and I can't wait to start using the paper. The experience of buying from them was really nice too, I don't regret choosing them even though their prices were a few dollars above some other choices I had. As I said before, I just think it's better to support a family business.

I took some pictures...

Heath, the TWSBI notebook arrived just as I was reading about bullet journaling. After 4 days, I love the notebook. Some showthru but not too bad, I can easily use both side of the paper. This bullet journal concept is pretty interesting. It's going we'll right now, I hope I can stay with it.

I had been waiting on this, which arrived today. Do not ask what I will use it for as I have no ideas at all. :) I have weaknesses for small items with fun detail. Super cheap eBay find, leather is soft and clearly hand worked. Not sure how friendly the paper will be, it is the thick cotton stuff prone to absorption and feathering, feels like. But I love it.

The leather notebook is cute! Sadly they really aren't fountain pen friendly most of the time, feel more like toilet paper under the nib... But there's still nice pencils for writing.

Anybody know of a notebook in A5 size with a dot grid pattern with white, not off-white/cream, coloured paper?

Depends on where you're based. In the UK there's the Dotgrid.co spiral-bound notebook, from this young company http://dotgrid.co/
I've used their dot grid notebooks, which are intended for designers, for journalling, and the paper is great. Pale grey dot grid printed on white 104gsm paper. I use a Pilot with f nib inked with Deep Dark Blue and there's no show-through at all.

They also sell A4 size and the paper loose.

For those outside UK they do international shipping but the postage costs might make this notebook prohibitive price-wise

What a terrific amount of books and journals there are.

I've already got a Moleskine hard cover notebook around A5 in size. Fit and finish are superb but I am not so sure about the paper's suitability to my fountain pen. It seems to spread the ink broader than I would like and feels a little grabby. My pen is a medium nibbed TWSBI with Pelikan Edelstein Sapphire Blue.

So I was off on the hunt for something new. Due to the staggering amount of brands and even within brands, I gave up after looking at the main ones and have ordered a couple of Rhodia Webbie notebooks and a large TWSBI softcover notebook. I'm sorry if they're off the target, but there are smashing 'I just love it' and awful 'it's useless with my pen' reviews for every single one I looked at. So in the end, just before my head exploded, I went with these ones!

By the way, on the same subject but sorry if this is off-topic to the thread... I see a Da Vinci leather journal on Andy's Pens website http://www.andys-pens.co.uk/italianjournals.shtml which looks very classy, if not expensive. Has anyone experience and opinions on this one?

I very much doubt that you'll be disappointed with either, Mark. :) I'll vouch for the Rhodias coping with anything up to and including a fully loaded dip pen, and there are plenty of flex pen enthusiasts saying nice things about the TWSBI books.

Do I really have to try a Moleskine, Chris?

Talking of moleskin (sic), the Elco paper I mentioned the other week turned out to be very nice indeed, with a velvety texture. Lovely to write on, not fantastic for bringing out shading but it certainly doesn't kill it off either. It's an interesting alternative to the super slick papers like Clairefontaine on the one hand, and laid papers on the other. Recommended if you can find it.

OK, let me qualify that "everything" as being what I consider to be paper. Moleskine doesn't make it. Nor does Mead filler paper. :)

Decided earlier today to give the Palomino Notepad a go so the order is in.

Not best known in the paper circles, their pencils are more popular and highly thought of so I thought why not! It's 100gsm paper and looks good in the size around A5.

One thing I have sadly discovered this early is Moleskine paper is a complete failure so far with the two fountain pens and five inks I've tried. It makes my fine nibs put down a line which I would call nearly too broad and the medium nibs lay down a line like a marker, making my usual sized handwriting impossible. I've not given up on Moleskine just yet though and will keep it for trying with later pens and inks.

On a happier note, the TWSBI Notebook is good and it's nice to have one in bright white compared to the usual creamier paper. The Rhodia Webbie is also an excellent paper - and the overall book is pure quality.

I have high hopes for this Palomino, too.

On a happier note, the TWSBI Notebook is good and it's nice to have one in bright white compared to the usual creamier paper. The Rhodia Webbie is also an excellent paper - and the overall book is pure quality.

I have high hopes for this Palomino, too.

I had a few pounds sitting with PayPal and, before closing my account, I spent the balance on some Oxford Office Wirebound Notebooks which have what they call Optik Paper in 90gsm. I went for a couple of five packs in A5 size.

Quickly read a couple of reviews and thought they'd be great for out and about writing/doodling at the river :)

I just picked up a Paperblanks Nocturnelle in the Ultra size, and a Russell and Hazel mini binder with a few different paper inserts. I just received the Paperblanks and it is beautiful in person.

I didn't notice that Paperblaks are sold in some stores here in Brasília, Brazil. I was in a stationery store in a mall and saw this very nice notebook, with a very well finish (both inside paper, cover and closing system) and then I saw the manufacturer: Paperblanks! Nice!

My wife prohibited me to buy one, with that look that says "another one??"... so sad... lol :)

It's in my wish list now. The price is salty.. something like $35,00 (us dollars) but it looks fp friendly.

Still waiting on my stationery and notebooks from The Bindery of Awesomeness but they should finally arrive tomorrow!

Meanwhile I've waited for - and received! - some Rivoli stationery pads in cream, pale blue and rose as well as some cream-colored envelope. Love this paper! Need to review it some time. Hadn't imagined that I'd take a liking to grey, blue and pink stationery but I do like it a lot.

I just saw your post thanks. If it wasn't for them being spiral bound they would be perfect. I need to use something across both pages preferably without a break in the middle. Might still try one.

For now I'm kind of making do with the Rhodia A5 pad in dot grid. Not a perfect solution but at least the paper is properly white.

Stone paper! I remember that stuff. And I still have two notebooks from Target. They were horrible for fountain pens --- ink never dried, and bled and feathered like it was a paper towel. I'd be interested to know if stone paper has improved some.

Stone Paper is okay as long as you don't use Noodler's ink in them.

1x Life Japanese Fine Paper - Writing Pad - A5 (15 x 21cm) - Super Fine 5mm lines - 30 Sheets for $12.95 each
1x Life Japanese Paper Notebook - A6 (10x15cm) - Vermilion - Ruled - 64 Pages for $5.95 each
1x Life Japanese Paper Notebook - A6 (10x15cm) - Vermilion - Grid - 64 Pages for $5.95 each

1x Clairefontaine Essentials - A5 (15x21cm) - Duo Book - Red - Ruled - Lined w/ Margin for $13.95 each

I still use a paper planner for almost everything. I have tried to use the calendar on my smart phone, but the electronic format just hasn't worked for me. I need to be able to write down my appointments, meetings, deadlines, notes, to-do lists, etc., in one place so that I can easily see what my day/week/month looks like. For the past couple of years, I have been using a weekly format (a Rhodia planner), but I think I will enjoy the extra space of the Hobonichi's daily format. I especially like the idea of being able to take more extended notes and keep my schedule all in the same book. We'll see how it works out.

I am blown away by the quality of the thing but a little worried about what pen to use. I do like a stub nib or a BB but my guess is the finer the better to avoid show through.

If you dont mind, what pen/ nib/ ink do you use?

I have basically been using which ever pen and ink I have at hand. I have several fine, XF, and XXF nibs inked up at the moment, and there is very little shadowing with them. I have also used a few medium/broad nibs and a broad stub, and there is shadowing, but it isn't bad. The biggest problem I have had is with smudging and long dry times; I now keep a 5x5 index card (it fits in the notebook almost perfectly) to use as a blotter.

Here are the nibs and inks I've used so far:

Lamy 14k XF nib, R&K Salix: very minor shadowing
Nakaya B stub (set up wet), Sailor Kobe Suzuran Green: moderate shadowing. You can see the shadow but it doesn't obscure anything on the next page.
Nakaya M stub (with flex), Iroshizuku Ama-iro: almost no shadow unless flexed. The paper can handle flex, but if you don't like shadowing, I wouldn't recommend utilizing it.
Pilot Vanishing Point XXF, Diamine Damson and Sailor Nioire Sumire: barely any shadowing, especially with the Sailor ink (which is a light purple)
Pilot PO nib (which is essentially XXF), Iroshizuku Ku-kaju: barely any shadowing, probably the least of any of my nib/ink combos listed here
Aurora medium/broad nib, Noodler's Cayenne: moderate shadowing
Lamy steel XF nib, Noodler's Liberty's Elysium: moderate shadowing. Again, it doesn't obscure anything on the next page, but it is noticeable. I don't find it distracting, but, as they say, YMMV.
Pilot Metropolitan M nib, Pilot Blue-black: moderate shadowing, same as above
TWSBI B nib, Sailor Rikyu-cha: moderate shadowing, same as above
Pelikan steel M nib, Iroshizuku Yama-budo: moderate to severe shadowing. This nib/ink combo might be the most distracting on the next page. I did stop using this one in the Hobonichi.
Vintage Pelikan fine flex nib, Iroshizuku Yama-guri: this nib is very fine and very dry unless flexed, so it works rather well with almost no shadowing
Pelikan 18k F nib with Diamine Red Dragon, Noodler's Walnut, and Diamine Oxblood: minor to moderate show through with Oxblood and Walnut. With this nib, Red Dragon is the most noticeable on the next page.

The Pelikan steel M nib with Yama-budo probably showed the worst shadowing. I saw the least shadowing from the vintage Pelikan nib, the Pilot PO nib, and the Lamy 14k nib with iron gall ink. I still haven't tried any of my BB nibs.

I've been surprised that the shadowing doesn't bother me too much. It's not terribly noticeable when the pages are lying flat. I've seen absolutely no bleed through or feathering, but I do recommend using some sort of blotter sheet to avoid smudging.

Re the Hobonichi planner:

2014 will be my second Hobo. For me, it’s the perfect planner. A few tips from things I’ve learnt over the past year :-
- slip a small sheet of blotting paper into one of the pockets. I use it a lot. Drying time can be extended for certain pen/ink combos
- the paper will accept most pen/ink combinations. The most successful pen for me is a Pilot Prera M with black Pilot/Namiki ink.
- some of the add-ons are worth buying. You can order most of these from the Japanese site - it’s easy to use and the shopping cart can be translated into English
- buy the small pencil board to use as a buffer between pages when writing. It’s not expensive and protects the soft Tomoe paper. It's also grid and metric marked so can be used as a ruler
- the Hobo is a standard A6 so fits in a number of other notebook covers e.g Midori MD, Mnemosyne, and other generic covers
- the Hobo works as a perfect BulletJournal, especially as it has the yearly pages and the blank “plan ahead” day at the start of each month. The grid marked full page for each day is very flexible in use.

Overall I love my Hobos.

Thanks. I have a confession/apology. I actually made the purchase bout a week and a half ago, and the planner has arrived.

Thank you very much indeed for the detailed analysis. That is extremely helpful :)

Most recent was the 2014 refill for my Franklin planner. What they call the "classic" size, which is slightly larger than A5. It isn't great paper, but it isn't horrible either. I was just looking at some recent pages (I use the 2 page per day version-one page just for notes) found one using EF, F, M, B & 1.1 mm. Apache Sunset in the B, Diamine Classic Red in the 1.1 and some greens and blues and blue blacks - no show through without holding up to the light. No problems using the other side of the page.

i love mine. fp friendly with a lamy 2000 or al-star, both fine, asa-gao or noodler's black. not much show through, no bleed through, no feathering. i like the format. i have a j.herbin slightly less than page size bookmark so i can jot and close and blot instantly.

7 notebooks from Yozocraft. All of them are around A5-sized, and have somewhere around 50 or 60 pages, I am not sure. Might be more. I'm actually using one from a previous order right now, and they're really fountain pen friendly (no show through whatsoever, but I am using F nibs and less saturated inks at the moment). I also paid far more for shipping than I did for the notebooks themselves, but then I don't expect 7 notebooks to be light.

Leuchtturm 1917 duocolor plain notebook A5 taupe/pink.
Leuchtturm 1917 A5 dotgrid purple.
Midori MD Cotton A5 notebook.

I really want an A5 dot grid notebook with white fountain pen friendly paper. My Rhodia Webbie has lovely paper but the almost beige colour isn't for me. I have their dotgrid notepads which are perfect colour wise but I really need notebook format. If the Leuchtturm doesn't work out then I'll probably end up using the Midori with a guide sheet underneath.

A minor haul of Lihit Lab Twist Ring goodies from Rakuten: 2 notebooks (one B5 with the larger rings, one B6 planner style), and two packs of paper: one 'premium' (dunno what that means exactly, I'm mostly flying blind on Rakuten, but it looked cream so that's good enough for me, lol), and one blank (hoping to see if you can print on it).

But I am REALLY liking these Hobonichi planners!! Wow, I can't believe I was getting them mixed up with the Design.Y notebooks, these look WAY more fun! And the stencils - omg, I have no words when faced with this much radness. I am probably way too excited about these, but hell, we all get excited about writing supplies here, right?

Hi Velo - what was your impression of the Leuchtturm duocolor notebook? I really love how that taupe/pink combo especially, and Leuchtturm's colors in general, but have read the paper is not as good as Rhodia for fountain pens. So am curious to see what another "Leuchtturm newbie" thinks of it!

I keep my journal on Tomoe River 8.5 x 11" cream, folded in half. It's a size and format that I can deal with and still maintain a fairly straight line. I have a goodly stack of these 4-page thingies, and someday I'll come up with a way to 'bind' them.

Or maybe I'll just get a book already made :)

I use such four page thingies for longer letters. Either the Tomoe River journals from Nanami (lined) or Paper for Fountain Pens ( hardback but unlined) serve as great journals.

I prefer unlined. I was all ready to get a book from Paper For Fountain Pens, but they are sold out at the moment. I bought 100 sheets loose instead. As soon as he has them back in stock, that's probably the way I'll go...

Not waiting, but here's what I found at the Little Bleu Cheese shop in Rochester yesterday:

The paper appears to be super fountain pen friendly, but not glossy smooth like Clairefontaine. Kind of like Apica, just how I like it!

Just out of curiosity, what do you dislike about Rhodia?

It's not that I dislike it, but it seems like e.g. every fountain pen review and what not is done on Rhodia paper and I just don't understand the obsession with it. The paper is a bit too smooth for my taste, which wouldn't bother me much, but besides from the dotpoint papers the lines/checkers(?) are way too intensive for my taste.
I wanted to get a small notepad to carry around for quick notes, but the intensive lines are really distracting. Would be nice if they had papers with more subtle lines printed on it instead of bright blue.
Still think the small notebooks by Rhodia are way better than Moleskine, though, which is absolutely unacceptable when you use it with a fountain pen - but I don't have much need for hardcover notebooks since I use the Midori refills.
So yeah, anyway, I appreciate Rhodia making these books and paper that can be used with fountain pens, I just don't understand the obsession with it when there are many other papers around :)

I get that about the lines and grids. This is why Bagasse from Staples remains a favorite: somewhere between India paper and Rhodia for slickness, and those nice tan lines.

I've also been using Kokuyo Campus notebooks. The paper is Rhodia-slick, but the lines are pale, pale gray.

It would be nice to see some other papers being used and I'll make a conscious effort to do so. I own three Rhodias; two of the pads and one of the A5 notebooks. It will probably be the last Rhodia notebook I use as the paper is just too off-white for me. The pads on the other hand are the perfect brightness and I like them for testing inks.

Yes, on the one hand it would be great to see different papers and how inks come out differently on these papers, on the other hand I gotta admit that everyone using the same paper for ink reviews allows easier comparison of two different inks because you can ignore the fact that different effects you observe might be due to different paper. So yeah, don't throw your Rhodias away yet :P

300 sheets of Raymay Davinci blank and lined filler paper for their personal/Bible-sized organizers, which is the same size and with the same hole layout as a Filofax personal-sized organizer. It's Tomoe River paper. I've realised that I don't actually use my Filofax as a proper agenda anyway, so I may as well fill it with blank (lined and not) paper and use it as a notebook-binder instead.

And I just ordered an Hobonichi planner for next year - it looks to be more open-ended than a lot of planners out there (also a matching cover. One of the cheap ones). Judging by measurements, it should be around the size of the personal sheets for Filofax and a little bigger than the A6 notebooks I use frequently, so I'm used to the small size.

Game of Thrones Ruled Journal: House of Targaryen
133mmx210mmx20mm - 192 pages. 6mm ruled lines.
Picked up the House Baratheon at Kinokuniya today with the red-brown faux leather cover. Seems to handle a wet 1.5 italic pretty well with only a faint mirroring on the back of the page. Ordered Taragaryn from the BookDepository $15.77AUD (saving $4) and because Kinokuniya has only the Baratheon. Maybe I'll use one to make notes if I get around to watching the series.

An A5ish Miquel Rius spiralbound notebook, and a medium Picadilly Essential notebook (in purple and red, respectively), from B&N.com.

I have a specific purpose for the Picadilly one - I actually really wanted a cheap, hardbound journal (I'm trying to mimic one that I had when I was younger), but one like the one I had as a kid is really hard to find these days, so medium Moleskine clones aren't too bad of a choice, and it hits the rest of the necessary bits (cheap, hardbound, red, lined). Basically, I want a notebook that I'm not going to feel bad if I fill it with crap, so the cheaper the better.

You might want to give the Rhodia Ice line a try as well. The lines are a nice, unobtrusive pale gray, and the paper is also not as glare-white as Rhodia - it's more like classic Clairefontaine. I don't like the classic Rhodia style either, the lines really get in my way and the paper is just too bright.

What I'm waiting on: the redesigned InkJournals from Oddo Ink. I'd gotten the old version, and I loved the layout but couldn't get used to the paper, and it was also just a bit too small, all told. This is exactly what they changed though, so when I saw that, I pounced! I'm pretty excited, dork that I am :P

I'm still on the hunt for my perfect field notes sized notebook. I loved the FN ambition set, but the paper just wasn't good enough. Gold edging, paper color, line colour, all great though. I prefer 5x5 grid rule to lined, and very subtle lines. I've tried moleskine (NOPE) and currently have a Clairefontaine on the go. The paper is every single fountain pen friendly (including flex and my extra juicy Franklin Christoph music nib) but the lines are just too dark for my liking, and the covers aren't exactly inspiring (not really an issue as I have it in my home made travellers notebook, but I'm a sucker for something pretty). Thinking of two options now - trying a Midori passport size, but I haven't seen one in person so don't know what the lines are like on it, or making my own out of tomoe river and fashioning some kind of writing board to slip underneath with a grid on.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

I made Field Notes-sized refills from Tomoe River paper, and while it's lovely to write on during meetings and such, it's a little less practical for quick scribbles while held in the hand or on my knee. I found that being (relatively) loosely held into a cover with an elastic wasn't rigid enough on its own, and I could also feel the uneven surface created by my little back folder for business cards, receipts and such.

To help with this I got sheets of white styrene plastic at a local arts store, varying thicknesses, and I'm experimenting to find something that will give me a more rigid writing surface but is still thin and light enough to tuck away easily. You could easily glue a printed template onto something like this (even use a different one on each side).

Handmade won't give you gilded edges and Tamoe River only comes in cream color, but you can still make your refills really attractive by varying the paper you use for covers. Start with basic cardboard (file folders, cereal boxes) and glue down ornamental papers from art stores. Or even printed cloth like quilter's cotton. (If you do that, glue the cloth down first, then cut out the shape, to give you nice even edges.)

If you can't tell, bookbinding is one of my hobbies. I make all my own sketchbooks because I like odd small formats that aren't available commercially. It's easy and really, really satisfying to do.

I am not waiting just yet, but I am teetering on the brink of a large Hobonichi order - 2016 Techno, plus cover, plus notepads etc etc! :)

Tomoe River, from Goulet. I haven't used this paper yet, but I bought a bottle of ink and the seller wrote a thank you note on Tomoe River paper. This paper is awesome. I'm impressed with how thin it is and it doesn't bleed. I just wish they made it in a notebook style. I ordered both cream and white
There are too notebook sources in the USA

Paper for fountain Pen

Or

Seven Seas Writer

In Europe and Asia the best is ordering a custom journal directly from a Japanese maker

Someone wrote me on BungBox paper with BungBox (Sailor) ink. That was nice paper. Never checked costs though. As my penpals can attest I am on a use up stockpiles bend

I received a letter on the Bung Box paper, and I can see why writingrav likes it so much. What nice texture!

I was waiting for, but just received a Levenger Junior Circa notebook with leather cover. I like the idea of being able to add or remove pages.

I have used the Circa system for years and love it. I am waiting on the Apica 3 notebook MassDrop

Tom (Silverbreeze) recommended the Circa system, as well as the Staples version of the Circa, and kindly sent me samples. I am hooked on these systems now as you can move the pages. It helps so much because I can organize my class notes, poems, book lists/reviews, etc.

I do like the Staples black and red notebooks, too. They are good everyday notebooks.

I love my Circa--for that exact fact that you can move the pages. Also helps there is a Rhodia version of their pages.

For everything else, my heart belongs to Tomoe.

One Rhodia ColoR pad, one Maruman Mnemosyne Today's Act Notepad, and two lined Rhodia No.12s (one R Premium and one Ice). I ordered them last night, so they should ship today or tomorrow and arrive within about a week.
