Shown here is a Dorsal Fin 1 in Heki Tamenuri from my available group of 11 Dorsal Fin 1's and 6 Dorsal Fin 2's (see final 2 pictures below). Dorsal Fins are among Nakaya's most popular models and if you have checked you know that the exclusive US dealer has not a single Dorsal Fin in stock.

Dorsal Fins take an extensive amount of hand work, as the fins are not carved or machined in any way. Rather, they are built up from layer upon layer of urushi. The Dorsal Fin 1 measures approximately 150 mm long capped and 143 mm long uncapped. The section is a bit longer than most Nakaya models, which many people find very comfortable. The model is chunkier than most Nakaya models, with a barrel diameter of 17 mm just above the threads and a section diameter that tapers from 13 to 12 mm.

This cartridge converter filled Dorsal Fin has a 14K gold nib in Broad Cursive Italic done by John Mottishaw. If you like the pen but not the nib, let me know and I will see if I can switch nibs between pens to provide a different size nib you might prefer. The pen has been lightly used and is of course accompanied by boxes, kimono, and cartridges.

nibs.com lists Dorsal Fin 1 for $1200

Is there a specific customization or speciality nib or something else for the 25% markup in the list price?

Thanks

Nope - just the fact that they are in high demand and there are very few around anywhere. Sort of like Conids (with some Ebay sales at triple the price of new), lots of Montblanc editions, anything made of Arco celluloids (even if the pens are brand new and still in production), new Oldwins made of certain materials, etc etc etc.

Anyone who wants a Dorsal Fin at the list price can certainly order one from Nakaya. The last one I ordered took 1 1/2 years to arrive. Some take less, some take more. Unless they decide to cease production of Dorsal Fins again, like they did once a few years ago.

If one is willing to wait, he/she can have one for less. If one wants the pen now, there is a premium. Everyone is free to decide for themselves.

Aah okay; just supply and demand: business, profiteering and capitalism at its best :-)

Good luck with the sale.

Sort of like the $800 +/- list price Conid you saw selling on Ebay for much more so offered to trade me for a $1500 or $1600 list Dorsal Fin 2?

People who live in glass houses and all that......

Good luck with your sale, too.

No offense. I was showing you a mirror.

You have purchased Nakayas pens for cheap on this forum and sold for mark ups. You were trying to do the same with Conid. Fell flat and showed you the door. Sour grapes ... huh.

I think we should enslave the penmakers of Japan and Belgium so high-end pens will be free for everybody.

FWIW whichwatch has always been a great guy and selling at fair market value for years. Key words - market value. I trust him and his pricing completely.
