Readers of this board know that some time ago I decided to break up and sell individually my collection of Lambrou Classic Pens LB5's in all 6 colors. I have now sold all 6 colors of the LB5's but have saved the best for last - and here it is!

Before ever releasing the LB5's in 6 different colors, Andy Lambrou produced a small number of early prototypes in two colors only - the blue and the red. Offered here is one of those few early prototypes in Tensui Blue, with rhodium trim and nib. While by far the most common nib used in LB5's was Medium, this pen features the much less common Broad.

Like all of the subsequent LB5's, the material is diffusion bonded acrylic that is unlike any other both in appearance and performance. The material was made in sheet form by Sintetica (Italy) and then diffusion bonded by Carville (UK) to produce the extremely durable and stable (not to mention drop dead gorgeous) material used in this pen. The pen is cartridge converter filled and equipped with the original huge Sailor 21K gold nib in Broad that is nice and bouncy.

There are three features that distinguish these early prototypes from the subsequent main series of LB5's:

1. Whereas there were 50 of each color LB5's, as far as I know the early prototypes were only made in two colors, with very few of each.

2. The prototypes feature a large silver trim ring below the threads that was deleted from the subsequent LB5's

3. The prototypes are the exact same size as the King of Pen on which LB5's were modeled. The subsequent LB5 was lengthened by 5 mm

The pen measures about 153 mm long capped and 132 mm long uncapped. The entire section and nib assembly are interchangeable with Sailor King of Pens.

The pen has been very lightly used and is accompanied by its original boxes and papers, including a card hand signed by Andy Lambrou and bearing the signature of the then Senior Executive Director of Sailor Pen Company.

I hadn’t noticed the additional silver ring on the prototypes before. I’ll have to pay more attention next time I see one.
