View Full Version : Staples Sustainable Earth Copy Paper (95% sugarcane)

It looks like Staples finally listened to the fans of their bagasse notebooks. They're finally offering unlined copy paper in their Sustainable Earth line (http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/StaplesProductDisplay?catalogIdentifier=2&langId=-1&noredir=true&storeId=10001&partNumber=375577#desc_content). It's 95% sugarcane. It's only available online, though, and not in-store. They currently have a buy 2 get 1 free sale, plus free shipping. It's only available by the case. I haven't tried it, as I only just discovered it-- plus I still have a ton of Office Max's Sugarmade paper (http://www.officemax.com/office-supplies/paper/copy-multipurpose-paper/product-prod3450808?history=io94h4z7|prodPage~15^freeText~ sugarcane+paper^paramValue~true^refine~1^region~1^ param~return_skus^return_skus~Y) (which I've been happy with, too). I'm assuming this paper performs as well as their notebooks for fountain pen inks. I haven't met a sugarcane paper that didn't. So this is just a heads up and not a review. I know many love their paper, including myself.

eta: just noticed the sale goes through 7/27/13.

It was mentioned over on FPN that this paper has shown up before by the ream in-store during back-to-school sales, so if you don't want an entire case, look in Staples over the next month or so and hopefully it'll be there.

I needed to order a case of paper for work so I switched our normal Staples paper to the Sustainable Earth one. I saved a bit of money and it is indeed more fountain pen friendly. :)

I didn't find any single reams of the stuff at staples so I went ahead and ordered the case. I also bought a jug of Pad/Book compound and I've been padding some up for convenience.

I'm very pleased with it! I'm using it when I copy the pages out of Sull's American Cursive Handwriting and it's considerably better than the normal (albeit high-Q) copy paper I'd been using.

If anybody wants a ream I'll send one to you for $6 (cost) plus actual shipping. PM me if ya like.

The paper feels lighter in weight than normal 20 lb. copy paper too... a plus in my world. :)

It is available by the ream for $6.99.
I just ordered it yesterday and it was delivered to my door today.

I had to order it as the local Staples did not carry it.
By using their in-store Kiosk, shipping was free :)

I did end up buying a couple of cases of this. I'd have to say it's my favorite of the sugarcane papers-- it's the brightest and smoothest. I'm hearing that some of the Staples stores are carrying it by the ream, so keep your eyes open for it. Here's what the ream looks like:

Any chance you'll offer up some packs of that paper in your store for, say, sad Northerners who can't get it anywhere local (or even within 300 miles, apparently)?

I've sent you an Etsy convo about this. :)

If you have a Staples near you, go in and use their Kiosk to order the paper.
Shipping was FREE to my door.

Single reams can be mail-ordered from Staples (http://www.staples.com/Sustainable-Earth-by-Staples-Copy-Paper-8-1-2-inch-x-11/product_398457) now, too.

Unfortunately they don't ship here. And I just had a comical interaction with their online help before finally getting them to admit that this was the case and why every paper I looked at was "out of stock." I dared them to show me ANY single ream of paper that was in stock and, of course, they couldn't. Maybe next time I head to Anchorage I'll browse :)

Anybody have any writing samples on this paper, front and back? I am assuming it handles FP ink well?

Only a sharpie shows through to the other side.

Thank you JBB! It does look like good paper. Maybe the next time I go to New Mexico I'll stop at the Staples in Las Cruces.

Here's a sample with mostly iron gall ink (homemade and commercial). It holds up well to Noodler's bulletproof inks and acrylics, too.

eta: sorry, I can't seem to add photos on this website anymore. You can see the photo I tried to upload here on my Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fiberdrunk/9401187671/).

Sorry, I seem to be having problems with uploading photos to this forum for some reason. It doesn't like my Flickr links any more. You can see the photo I tried to upload here on my Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fiberdrunk/9401187671/).

Just received my ream - wrote on one side - ran it through our copier at work to scan it into jpeg, back side is totally blank no bleed through at all.

fiberdrunk thanks again for posting the information about this paper! And cwent2 appreciate your additional writing sample and confirmation of the paper's qualities, as well.

I got a ream of this today, and can confirm the paper's FP friendliness. Even my wettest nibs (no European broad nibs, FYI) showed no bleed-through! While there is show-through it's not the annoying kind of heavy show-through. The paper puckers a wee bit from the ink in the wettest spots. Backside is totally writeable, and causes no illegibility in the reading of either side.

At first, the paper felt so much like regular copy paper I pulled two other 20# papers from my office closet to compare: a Donmar 20# FSC "office" paper and another Staples 20# 100% recycled paper. The latter bled through like crazy even with the finest, dryest nib. The Donmar was a surprise and performed with only one hint of bleeding using a wet Levenger True Writer F inked with Sailor Grenade. Well, neither here nor there, because the Donmar is used exclusively in my printer. I just never knew how FP friendly it was before today!

The Staples Sustainable Earth 20#: no bleed-through, very pleasant to write on. Smooth but not "premium" smooth. Just kind of innocuously smooth. Definitely am going to use this paper to make notepads!

Cheers,
Julie

Here's my scan of the Staples Sustainable Earth. The show-through is not as noticeable as seen in the scan. (Scanners are wonderfully sensitive, aren't they?)

@jde

I do not have a nib larger than medium unless you count my Speedball dip nibs. I did put down a few blobs of ink and let it set for a bit and it resulted in " The paper puckers a wee bit from the ink in the wettest spots." as you stated and I quote here. Overall I came to the same conclusion - I will be, and have made a couple of Madori Style - size notepads/books for the Madori Traveler style notebook I made.

Just a note the scan I did the blank area on the left is running it through the copier print side up - to show there was no bleed through or ghosting of the sample on the right side.

Hope it was useful

This is a heads up. Staples is having a "Daily Deal" today (11/19/13). This paper is $19.95 for a case for today only. Free shipping, too. This is the cheapest I've ever seen it.

I'm glad you were able to get some. I wasn't sure if the link would work or not. Did you get free shipping with it? That's what the email said, but when I called Staples to order, they told me it was only free shipping for orders over $40. But then they messed up my rewards card, and so gave me free shipping anyway for all the trouble. I couldn't resist ordering when it was this cheap. Now if the Sustainable Earth composition books would go on sale for $1 again... I missed that last time.

I was able to get the free shipping and was already notified by Staples that my paper is supposed to be delivered today!
