Hello all!

My name is Wayne and I just started using a fountain pen this past year. And quite frankly, it is fast becoming a fun hobby for me! I already have a handful of pens in a matter of a few months. Looking forward to reading the input from this forum and one day go to an actual pen show!

Thanks
Wayne

Hi Wayne! I just started with fountain pens this year as well. Not sure what pens you have, but I started out with very inexpensive pens and never would have believed I would spend a lot of money on a pen. Then I found a Sailor Pro Gear Slim on Amazon for $95, figured what the hell, may as well try it out....popped in the ink cartridge, and as soon as that gold nib touched paper, it was like the heavens opened up and I heard the angels singing...and basically, I was done for. (Not that I don’t appreciate steel nibs too, and there are certainly excellent steel nibbed pens in the lower price ranges)

The pen show in the city nearest me was cancelled this year....have my fingers crossed for next year! Supposedly the DC pen show is on, which I could go to if I was up for a 3 hour drive...but I’ve been getting my “fix” from a local seller who has been doing a monthly weekend pop up shop at the mall.

Everyone here has been very nice, very helpful, and very knowledgeable. Welcome!

Thank you all for the kind words and hospitality! I have found that the folks in the fountain pen world to be very welcoming and supportive! It is another reason I am liking my new hobby. I am in the Detroit area so it looks like my first actual pen show will be in Chicago later this year if all goes well. I have attended a virtual one that was very interesting and plan to support the St Louis virtual show as well. My very first fountain fen was a Lamy Safari and have since added a few more Lamy's, TWSBI 580, a Faber Castell Hexo, a Pilot Metropolitan, A Kaweco Sport, and my first gold nib-Pilot Custom 74! I have a Pilot Custom 823 on order.

I bought the Custom 74 and the Custom 823 last Friday, both fine nibs. The 74 is nice, but I’m finding mine has to have a very lubricated ink in it, or it seems a little dry. The 823 - what can I say?? ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ It’s perfect. So far I’ve only used the Pilot Blue ink that came with it, but it writes like a dream. Everything I hoped for and more. You are going to love it!

Thanks for the info! I bought my 74 with a medium tip used. I really like the feel of it but it does seemed to be a tad wet for me. I contribute that to the fact that the previous owner said that it had some nib work done on it. It is a really nice pen though. I have been using Kon Peki ink with and it looks very nice. Maybe I could try another ink that is a little drier?

I ordered the 823 in medium as well because I like all my other pens in medium such as the Pilot Metro and Lamys so I figured M is the way to go for the 823. I guess I could swap it out if I find a similar situation that I am seeing in the 74?

Hello Wayne, and :welcome:

Hopefully, one day, fountain pens will become less of a hobby...and more of a way of life. Good to have you with us.
