View Full Version : For the Love of B&W Photography

I know quite a few of us here love B&W photography.
So why not have a thread dedicated for it.

Pen or no pen, all welcome, as long as it is B&W, and it's yours.
Lastly, remember this is *not* a photography forum, enjoy the photos, be gracious with your observations, and be generous with your compliments.

Let's start, shall we...

Since you'd like to entertain some B&W, perhaps you'll have ideas about a project I'm working.

In 1974, New Jersey photographer George Tice created an image of a Mobil gas station in South Jersey. It's become well regarded enough that if you want a print today, it's $50,000. I've been trying to do a current version of that print that can recall the original in some way. The gas station has changed, but so much else has changed it's not so easy. Anyway, I'll link to Tice's image, then two I've now got as working models so far...

https://www.afterimagegallery.com/ticeplatpetits.jpg

And then my current renditions...

What a fun project to take on, Bill. Glad you're sharing it with us.

George Tice is a master darkroom printer. His prints have the tonality and subtlety that would delight B&W fans everywhere.

Silver halide or <gasp!> digital?

Not easily, nor quickly, but I have come to terms with digital B&W :)

Though I am forever *grateful* that I had the chance to experience the anticipation when pulling those 120 rolls out of the tank after rinsing the fixer off, and the magic that never gets old, seeing images form in the tray of developer under a red light...

Dang it. You made me miss my darkroom again, Fred.

Just 25 years ago, I spent a lot of time in the darkroom. I have no regrets about that this has changed. From my point of view, digital photography has many advantages for amateurs like me.

...of course I kept all the negatives and slides. You never know. :)

I went into the last local traditional camera and film processing shop in the region, and asked if I could have contact prints made of hundreds of old 120 and 35mm film strips. I wanted contact prints to sort and cull the negatives and choose full-size prints. He was eager to help, but he replied that neither he nor any labs do contact prints of film anymore.

If anyone knows of a lab in the USA that does B&W (and color) contact prints, please share. (Or is there a digital equivalent I can do with my MFC printer/scanner? I would assume the negatives have to be backlighted to scan...right? I am reluctant to delve into digital equipment to do a one-time job of viewing thousands of negative images. I gave up on finding a decent negative scanner a decade ago, but maybe things are easier now.)

Fred you're better off getting a high quality scanner to scan the negatives....

I'd completely agree with Yazeh.

I've been using my stepson's dedicated film scanner, which did a brilliant job. I was able to print contact sheets, individual shots more importantly save digital versions for editing and printing later on.

His is an Optikfilm (Plustek) which is a proper optical scanner (not a digital camera sensor in a scanner body) but it only handled 35mm (I think). They may well have versions for other formats. The software that comes with it was also pretty impressive.

If you have the space, the flatbed Epson Photo range of scanners are also very good (especially the V550 Photo) and handle multiple sizes, even mixed and matched. I had its predecessor for many years, but have finally said goodbye to it because I just don't have the room for it to sit nearby and it needs to be connected to at least a laptop. I may come to regret that decision!

There are also lots of small standalones - including the cheap and cheerful versions on Amazon that cost less than $100 - which have the advantage of having a viewing screen, so you can do a quick run through without even needing to print contact sheets. Avoid the Kodak Scanza (sp?). It's very quick and easy to use and does lots of formats, but the scan quality is rubbish!!

Fred, I'm sure there are commercial places still providing scan services, but to do hundreds, you're going to spend a lot for high quality scans. I suggest you go to ebay, find a good quality used scanner, do the tedious chore of scanning yourself (hours and hours of pure boredom from my experience), then resell the scanner if you never intend to use it again. I'd guess your net cost would be $100 or less -- far, far less than any commercial scanning service!

Here's a sample of B&W film scanned to digital. I think it was Fuji Acros film from a Canon D1 camera:

We began that two years ago, finished it this year.

I went the other direction. I collated and culled all the slides, bought and restored a Leitz projector (Leica still sells parts!) and lots of used slide trays (they sell for next to nothing). Done. But after looking at them all, I stacked them in the back of a closet and have no urge to get them out again.

Christof, we all probably need just one pen, but want different ones at different times.

After we ended up with a collection, then we can do as you did above, pick our most favorite.

That doesn't mean the rest of the collection is worthless or undesirable anymore.

In this hobby, we are allowed to have many favorites, and I am grateful for that. There's not many things in life that we can (or should) apply that to :)

I presume you're talking about the vid link I posted.

Interesting as I thought I was unique in finding his vids mostly unpleasant. They are usually a lot longer and rambling and boringly pretentious. I tried this one because it was specific to B & W and it was shorter than most. Strangely, I hung on every word, probably because of the shared experiences.

Fred , You have two option to get a Film scanner . ( 35Mm/ medium format ) It the Epson Flatbed scanner with which you could use a dedicated negative holder to do the scanning.
Secondly if you could find a Nikon Cool scanner for medium format it is the top choice. It is relatively costly as you can reproduce Hi-Res scanning.
Also you can check for a Nikon Cool scanner for 35mm Only. It is less expensive and only for 35mm.
Although Nikon do not supports... Nikon 's own Software for the present PC Or Mac flat forms ,there are independent Software developers do that to for continued used to keep those two Old scanners!!
If you want to digitise on to HI-RESELUTION FILES IT IS WORTH LOOKING AT THOSE TWO SCANNERS!!!

The sparrow hawk who visits my garden from time to time, doubtless to snack on a wee bird, is very cool and fearless about having her photograph taken from about eight feet away. Do hawks understand the concept of glass and that while we are behind it we can do her no harm?

She watched us at the window, her head rotating through most of 360 degrees like an owl's, so that she could study us with one eye and then the other, making of us whatever it is that hawks make of humans: inedible and possibly dangerous.

https://images15.fotki.com/v1670/photos/2/3815032/14358355/IMG_2248-vi.jpg (https://private.fotki.com/sempilch/private/img-2249.html)

I'm ambivalent about her (she has the female colouring). I love her grace and ferocity, the sleek body built for speed, the intelligent eye which sees much more than we poor creatures are capable of. She's an image of ferocity and yet she's no more fierce than a shopper in the supermarket. I'm highly privileged to see her so close but I wish I didn't make slaughter so easy for her by feeding the birds. I don't want to be Burger King for hawks. Photos are courtesy of Deb. I'm a crap photographer.

Chrissy
April 16th, 2022, 12:26 AM
Eachan the very morning after you posted Deb's photos on this thread I also had a visit from a sparrow hawk. It was really early in the morning and very sadly one of the male blackbirds was caught unawares so when we got up the local male 'sprawk' was having his breakfast under the shade of a conifer tree. I only had my iPhone and snapped a few shots that didn't come out very well. I've played with this one a bit so it's neither too dark nor too graphic but if you squint a bit you can just about tell it's a male sparrow hawk eating a meal.

You don't make slaughter any easier for a sprawk just because you attract birds to your garden. They don't have that great a hit rate anywhere and probably only catch something to eat every couple of days. By comparison UK cats kill 27 million birds in spring & summer. And I'm only quoting a Wiki fact there. I'm a cat lover myself.

The other four were taken with a Nikon D3100 (digital) in color and converted to black and white in either Lightroom (the grass, Kanga the kitty cat, and the rocks) or Photoshop (the sea gull). They were all taken within the last year. (BTW, I do shoot black and white film, too, usually Ilford Delta 100 or 400, or TMax. Occasionally Tri-X. Will try to dig up a few of those to post when I get a chance.)

My images are not as well organized as they should be. Still, I somehow managed to dig up this photo of the Eel River in Fortuna, California. I took it on a cloudy day with Ilford Delta 400 (120 roll film) in a Lomo Lubitel 166U, a Soviet-era knock-off of the Voigtlander Brilliant twin lens reflex.

Here's another one I forgot I had. I originally shot it in 35mm Kodachrome about 30 years ago with a David White f/2.8 Realist Stereo camera. It takes two side by side images simultaneously from its two lenses, which are separated by about the average distance between a pair of human eyes. Mount the "chips" (half frame transparencies) in a slide holder, pop it into a Realist viewer, and and voilà -- 3D! I had the slides scanned ages ago, and I converted the scan of one of the chips of this view to black and white in Lightroom, where I also added a little grain because, why not? And cropped it square. I apologize to any purists who are appalled by such behavior. It's a place called College Cove in Trinidad, California, about 300 miles north of San Francisco and about 85 or 90 miles from the Oregon border.

Calumus... Lubitel eh? Amazing. When I first went to art college my dad bought me a Lubitel, he was horrified at the cost of a 'blad, which the richer kids got.
I think Lubitel was a Russian or East German camera? It was a bit cheap in it's feel and handling, but I did some nice shots with it way back then. Lubitel... I'd love to see a pic of yours, assume it's a medium format SLR like a 'blad?
Ah, now I've read your earler post.. so it is a TLR Like a Rollieflex yes? (I have a couple of beautiful Mamiyas -a TLR and a 645 that sadly never get used nowadays).

I sold the Lubitel so I could buy a CLAed 1934 Zeiss Ikon Ikonta, and just shot my first couple of rolls of film in it yesterday. I sure hope they come back looking good! Fingers crossed. It takes 6x9 exposures, 1 1/2 times the size of the Lubitel. But I do have a picture of it. I put a step-up ring for filters and a lens hood with lens cover on the taking lens, and got a lens cover for the viewing lens.

The answer would be "yes" if I'm still doing B&W photography. I left that hobby and switched to fountain pens + sketching, partly because I don't have the time nor the space to do it -- in the manner that I want to -- anymore.

For several years now, I have been using a full-frame digital camera (Sony A7) + my old manual focus OM lenses.
The above photo in particular was taken with the 85/2.

I'm not trying to overpost, honest I'm not! I'm not, I'm not, I'm not! (That last inspired by a slogan on a license plate holder that I saw when I lived in L.A. The car was a candy apple red brand new sporty Mercedes convertible, being driven by what looked like a 16 or 17-year-old girl. It was right in front of me at a stop light in Beverly Hills, and I was able to see the license plate and holder easily. The license plate holder said, "I'm not spoiled! I'm not, I'm not, I'm not!"

But anyway, I just got back the first two rolls from my "new" 1934 Zeiss-Ikon Ikonta, and I am beyond delighted with this camera. I only get 8 shots per roll of film (120) because it's a 6x9, but that Tessar lens — wow! It's uncoated, too, giving the photos an old-timey look. I'm going to share a few photos. They were all taken within about 10 miles of where I live in rural Northern California, about 300 miles north of San Francisco.

I used T-Max 400.

Sorry Fred, but now you know how I felt when you gave me the address of that guy with the Big Reds... (oh, and thanks...)
As Adrian Monk used to say, "You'll thank me later."
This is where I got my CLA'd Ikonta: https://www.petrakla.com
Right now they have two fully serviced Ikontas, a 6x4.5 and a 6x9, each for $275. Ansel Adams used a Super Ikonta ($495) before he went large format. Same as an Ikonta but with a built-in rangefinder for measuring camera to subject distances. But you can find a vintage standalone distance rangefinder for about $50, or eyeball the distance. Depth of field tables come in handy.
Can't beat that Zeiss glass.

Wow! Digital caffenol. Who'd a thunk it? (It looks a lot like images I've seen from film developed in caffenol.)

Believe it or not, film can be way cheaper than digital under certain circumstances. For example, let's say you shot a once in a lifetime photo that you wanted to blow up and hang over your living room sofa. If you're shooting digital on a slightly older APS-C or even full-frame "35mm" sensor, you're out of luck. With a medium format digital camera, with sensors that start at about 50MP, you can get 23" x 23" prints. Just the body of a medium format camera with a sensor that size starts north of $3000. If you want to get up to, say, 30x40, it'll take about 108MP, I think. Bodies for those cameras start around $8000 and go up from there. The glass adds many more thousands of dollars just for one lens. But, you can find a serviced used Yashica TLR for $200, with a built-in taking lens, and drum scans of one of its negs can produce prints in that ballpark. A drum scan can cost $50 and up per frame, but for a once in a lifetime shot, that's not exorbitant. Anyway, that's why a lot of pros have gone back to film. Plus the look is something you can't get with digital.

Maybe so but i don’t usually go out looking for shots. I get what i get while going about my usual daily routine. So I have to shoot what i can always afford and always have with me. Also the time required for film isn’t in the budget either, family comes first and i barely have the time to edit what i get now. The last thing i need is another expensive time consuming hobby ;)
The good news is that i have a sensor that shoots close to 50MP and upscaling software is really good now for those lower MP shots.

And i do have a shot i want to blow up to sofa size. It’s a stitched pano and then super resolution upscale. However, again cost of print is preventing that from happening right now.

K, I’ll stop now and let someone else have a turn :P

This is my favorite! Please keep posting it AT LEAST every two years!

I’ll try and remember! Glad you like it :) (the colour version is pretty nice too IMO)

The cost of a large print is insane.:faint:

One of a few i want “couch sized” (original image is 118 MP)
Since i somehow managed (i think) to evoke the feeling i was trying to capture. I usually fail at getting that feeling but this one and a few others; i managed it, for me at least.

For reference, it’s a recently harvested corn field on a very cold day.

Really really like the rhythm of the alternating diagonals in this one. The reflections are cool too, but this is the one that spoke to me the loudest, and got me to click on your Flickr link (Pfaehle_01).

Tks. The contrast of the feel of the clouds vs the relatively more uniform texture of the ground was what i was going for with the look of this one.

Do you use a red or yellow filter, or do everything in post? Inquiring minds want to know.

And thanks for breaking the rule. Beautiful shot either way, but I think the black and white gets my nod.

Edit: But the more I look at the color version, the more I like it. I particularly love the moss growing on the stump, I think.

No. No filters. I do everything in post. Shoot in colour. Convert to BW for shots when it’s appropriate.
In fact I have colour versions of the pics in posts 140 and 144 and I like them equally to the BW versions.
Could shoot in BW but that limits options later, including that there are multiple ways to convert to BW as seen by the different “colour” profiles in my BW shots. One thing I’m likely to continue to have to keep working on is the tendency to over process. I’m doing it LESS than I used to. But I suspect it will always be something I need to watch out for.

I attempted to visit the antiques store today, but they were closed.
Probably for the best for my wallet… especially since I’m considering a camera upgrade and it won’t be cheap…

Edit: sometimes I will use a polarizer but usually that’s only at home as I generally don’t have it with me out and about. Although I have tried using my sunglasses in place of a polarizer, results were mixed.

Sadly I can do so much with my Nikon digital now, it's almost too easy.

Both of these things are within 50-100 feet of one another

They are in a small town called Chesterville near where I lived until recently.
As to what it is? I’m not 100% sure, but I think it used to be a silo of some sort.
