I finally managed to get my new Royal Mail price guides from the Post Office and found the cost to send international letters has gone up to £1.70.

However, although that sounds very high for a postcard, the weight bands covered by this price are now up to 100grams for Europe and up to 20grams for anywhere else in the world.

No longer will I need to ensure I use Tomoe River paper and an airmail envelope then carefully weigh my letters to the US in order to ensure they weigh less than the old 10grams limit. That's a bit of good news. :) I can use some nice paper and envelopes and might even be able to include an add-in occasionally :)

Good news! I trust the weight changes won't be used as justification for subsequent price increases. (Hope springs eternal.)

We've already had two price rises this year, surely that must be enough!

The regular one they have in March isn't happening this year because we had the last one in January.

Which was on top of the ones that went up in July last year (having already gone up in April).

However, they're still IMO one of the best in class - especially compared to many of the European carriers.

All in all it is a large increase. All letters to Europe to 20gm were £1.45 and are now £1.70. All one sheet letters to the rest of the world formerly at the abolished 10gm rate, also £1.45, are now £1.70 too. Something like a 17% increase. My mental arithmetic is a little slow tonight. A new World Zone 3 has also been created for Royal Mail International comprising just the USA. Some services to World Zone 3, International Tracked and Signed parcels comes to mind, though I do not have the document in front of me, have a special higher price than to anywhere else.

Although it's not good value to send postcards to the US now I've been enjoying writing to my US pen friends and only being concerned with not going over 20grams. My letters all weigh almost twice as much as they did before. :)

Being on a fairly low income, the price counts quite a lot with me.

Buy your stamps on ebay. Currently 10 brand new E stamps for £14.50. I can't remember the last time I actually bought stamps from a Post Office.

Thanks for the tip. I already do in fact.

Yes, 10 grams is very small indeed. The main thing is to make sure the price lasts at least a year.
