Hi friends! I'm a big fan of fountain pens, both modern and vintage. I got carried away by fountain pens in 2016 and first bought various vintage pens. Some pens was in work condition, but some is not. I learned to repair them, fix nibs and regrind them to different sizes if it needed. Over the 5 years, many impressions and photos I accumulated in my archives. 4 years ago I decided to systematize my knowledge and made my blog dedicated to fountain pens and everything about this theme and share it with other fans of fountain pens or do easier choice for beginners. Last year I did over 60 review and tests. If the community is interested, I will post in this thread announcements for reviews, I can even for those that already exist and were written by me earlier. I suppose to do 2 threads: one dedicated to modern models 1980 (70?) - 20xx and one dedicated to earlier vintage models.
Today I present a last review written yesterday.

Pilot Metal Falcon Black (made in Japan) FE-25SR-BSF

The design of this model is exactly the younger resin model, cylindrical shape with slightly tapered ends. The body is made of brass and covered by black lacquer. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its own proprietary Pilot format. Cap on thread, double start thread, closing-opening in 1 1/4 turns.

Cross Townsend Black Lacquered (made in Ireland) 566-FA 10BL

This is a rather large pen with a characteristic recognizable shape, for me it really looks like a real torpedo 🙂 because of the tapered ends with a shiny cap. The body is made of brass, covered with black glossy lacquer, with a gilded cap. The filling system is a cartridge-converter of proprietary Cross format. The cap on friction, closes with great effort (5mm stroke) and a click at the end.

Hello everyone! Today at my show is another fountain pen from luxury segment from Italian masters.

Montegrappa Cosmopolitan 1849 E-W “California Gold Rush” LE (made in Italy) ISCON3SU

The tool have is a classic cylindrical shape with almost flat and slightly rounded tops. The main material is sterling silver with the khow-how technique of low-relief engraving. The section, piston knob and ring accents are made of dark blue resin. The filling system is standard for this class of pen – a built-in captive converter. Cap on thread, single-start thread, coarse, with trapezoidal section (pipe), closing/opening in 2 turns.

Fabulous artwork, and a very beautiful pen - just such a shame that it's a captive converter rather than true piston - it seems such a shabby thing to do to such a lovely thing.

Thank you! I had not come across this thread before. While I like a pen review as much as the next person, I don't tend to read them that often. However, when enticed by such fine artwork and exquisite handwriting, it is a pleasure! I like the art that comes with the Montegrappa pen and the image reminds me of my favorite section of "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs", which is the story called "The Gold Canyon" and features a wonderful star turn by singer/songwriter Tom Waits:

Fabulous artwork, and a very beautiful pen - just such a shame that it's a captive converter rather than true piston - it seems such a shabby thing to do to such a lovely thing.

What is a captive convertor?

It is a converter that is built into the pen and activated by a knob, usually covered by a blind cap. Usually it means you can't unscrew the section, and it is an inexpensive way to make a semi-piston filler pen. Schmidt used to make an entire unit that could be put inside the pen this way. The main difference from a piston filler is that the ink is still inside of the 'converter', not using the entire barrel of the pen for ink supply. As such, it is still a relatively small supply. Some pens, like the Leonardos, have a converter that threads into the section and has a long piston knob you can access from the rear of the pen, although you can still take the section off and remove the converter.

There are a few variations, but I hope that makes it more clear.

Hello everyone! I would like to return again to the Cross brand and show you one more version of the Townsend model, but in a different, in my opinion, interesting design.

Cross Townsend Tuxedo (made in Ireland) L556-F

This is a enough large pen of the well-known Cross design, until recently the top model (before the release Peerless 125 model). The body is made of brass with black glossy lacquer with sterling silver cap(unmarked). The filling system is a cartridge-converter system of its own proprietary Cross format. The cap on friction, closes with a pleasant force (5mm travel) and a click at the end.

After 2.5 years, another tool fell into my hands, and I don’t want to create a personal post for it, but at the same time I have something to show 🙂

Montblanc Meisterstuck 147 Traveler LeGrand (made in Germany)

This tool is a cigar-shaped form (torpedo) made of black, glossy (precious) resin with gold-plated elements. Cap on thread, full closure in 1 1/6 turn with three-start thread. The filling system is not a classic piston, but a cartridge. The tail section, which in the classical system is the piston knob, in this case is the tail section of the tray for 2 cartridges: one working, the second reserve. The system does not needed manually mounted cartridge by pressure, this did automatically when the tray is screwed into the body. There is a locking tab inside the tray that fixed cartridge from moving.

In search of information about this model, I came across another interesting thread on FPN, namely, the possibility of using a converter in the cartridge tray. In the thred, there was a mention of a mini converter of the Monteverde using a shrinkable pipe. The idea itself seems utopian to me because the standard cartridge is much smaller than the tank volume of the 146 piston-filler model, so why reduce it even further with a mini converter?. However, there was the opinion of a one FPNers who uses a pen only for signatures and his cartridges empties is very very slowly, the nib dry out faster than he writes them. In general, for the sake of interest, I also decided to experiment on this topic. I didn’t have a Monteverde mini-converter at hand, but I did have an international KaWeCo mini converter. After installing this converter in tray, it turned out that there was still a lot of space left until the stop and converter was not fixed. Having looked around everything on the table 🙂 my gaze fell on the syringe with which I fill the cartridges, or rather, not even on the syringe itself, but on the needle cap. As it seemed, it is ideal as a compensating collar, even the necessary measurements have already been made by the technologist in the form of stiffening ribs.

Hello to all readers and pen lovers. Today I have the 2nd premiere. Firstly, this is my first review of this brand, and secondly, this is probably one of the smallest, modern, serial models of fountain pens.

Kaweco Liliput Silver (made in Germany) 10000453

The shape of this pen is cylindrical with rounded ends and most likely looks like an elongated pill (or mini sausage :)), and its diameter is no thicker than my youngest son’s little finger :). Despite the name Silver, this pen is made of brushed aluminum and construct of the minimum elements: nib unit in collar, section, body and cap. Filling system is cartridge/converter by international format. The cap, by the way, on thread, the thread is single-start, closing/opening in 3 and 3/4 turns.

Hi to all readers! Not so long ago I reviewed a smaller model of the first year of production, and today I want to show a “oversize” version of the later years of release in the top design.

Montegrappa Reminiscence Oversize Vermeil with Palladio pattern (made in Italy) RE94

The design of this pen is a octagonal shape and is made of gold plated sterling silver. This cover design is called Vermeil, while the goldplated face should be at least 2.5 microns (for Reminiscence – 5 microns), in contrast to the more commonly used 0.25-0.4 microns. With proper care, this allows you to keep the original appearance for a long time. Filling system is cartridge/converter by international standard. Cap on thread, single-start thread, closing/opening in 1 with 1/4 turns.

Thanks. I have an early 1983 model with a plastic section and handcrafted hard-rubber feed - this is a great pen (I have post about this pen). But when I was writing this post, I never found a 1915 model that inspired the design of the reminiscence - so I think this is just an advertising stunt.

Hey! The day before yesterday I presented a review of the higher model of the Reminiscence line, and today I want to show the smaller one, about the same period of production.

Montegrappa Reminiscence Slim Sterling silver with Palladio pattern (made in Italy) RE3

The design of this pen is a same octagonal shape but little diameter and is made of sterling silver. Filling system is cartridge/converter by international standard, but unlike the first year model, any cartridges and converters of this format will fits with narrow or wide(Chinese) neck. Cap on thread, single-start thread, closing/opening in 1 with 1/3 turns.

In my case, apparently, it really took a lot of luck to this Fortuna to make it work well:)

Montegrappa Fotuna w|Rose Gold plated (made in Italy) ISFOR2RC

This fountain pen is cylindrical and slightly barrel-shaped with flat tops, made of black resin. The folded design, I would say, is recognizable and resembles Miya and Extra, but without a cap it is similar to Esterbrook Estie Oversized :). The filling system is a cartridge-converter by international format, but it is completed with a proprietary converter with thread to section mount. The cap is traditionally on the thread, the thread is big with pipe profile, closing/opening in 1 turn. There is a metal thread on the section but plastic in the cap.

Greetings friends! Today I do not have a review, but rather a short note about a replacement nib unit, or even more precisely a ground tip to smaller size.

Replacement nib unit Pelikan M101N (made in Germany)

It probably makes no sense to write about the shape of these modern nib units, they have a similar design, consisting of a plastic collar with thread and steel ring, plastic feed and nib. This nib unit from modern special edition Pelikan M101N model, based on the historical model Pelikan 100N(produced from 1937 to 1954). The diameter and thread of the collar is suitable for models from M100 to M600.

Hello everyone for the second time this day! In continuation of the day’s post about re-grind the Pelikan M101N nib unit to the UEF, another nib unit, but from Conklin and with a slightly different task, but also into a thin line.

Ground to Italic EF nib from Conklin Omniflex #6 (old style)

I have already tried a similar nib, which I bought to replace the corrode original nib in the Conklin Crescent Stealth DeLuxe pen, only that nib was in steel color, and this one was in yellow color. I really didn’t like it and I later re-grind it to Drawing nib, but at the end I still replaced it to custom Noodler’s Flexible # 6. This nib is completely similar.

The nib: steel, size 6, plated by yellow material that does not like a gold plated. On the surface of the nib, under the heart-shaped breather hole, FLEX is imprinted, the company logo is Conklin in oval, the brand founding city is Toledo and country of origin USA. Do not be fooled by the Flex imprint – because this nib is quite tough, moreover, there are a lot of negative reviews on the network when, after flexing, the tines not closed and sometimes even fall off.

Hi, to continuation of two previous posts about nib grinding. Of course, this work will seem dubious to most (including me) because this nib is untipped and this will sooner or later affect to the line width. Nevertheless, work is work and I have a desire to share my experience.

Ground to Italic EF nib from Conklin Stub 1.1 (made in USA)

This nib unit is completely identical to the previously shown Conklin Omniflex except that it is made from ordinary stainless steel but without tip, because the shape of this nib is Stub. Almost all manufacturers of modern steel nibs of Stub format make them without tip because the contact surface of the nib with the paper is very large, which reduces friction and abrasion of the end of nib. And even if the tip starts to wear off to sweetspot, it won’t have a big impact on the result.

I use every ink I have from time to time( http://lenskiy.org/2019/01/fountain-pen-ink-colorama/ ), but for sketch on order I use only Platinum Carbon Black and Montblanc Permanent Black because they are fade resistant and waterproof ( http://lenskiy.org/2020/06/fountain-pen-inks-light-resistancefadeout-test-2020/ ). For watercolor techniques (Inkquarelle http://lenskiy.org/2020/03/chaiku-inkquarelle/ ) I like to use Parker Black Ink because they have wide chromatography. Now I plan to buy and try the Rehrer N Klinger SketchInk series, but so far there is no extra money :).

Welcome all! This year my summer “in Italian” style and today I have another “big” Montegrappa in every sense of the word.

Montegrappa Privilege Deco Oversize in Moonstone (Pearl) Grey Resin with Art Deco pattern (made in Italy) ISPLP3SJ

This model is currently the last of the Reminiscence theme, so the shape (silver overlay) is based on the same octagonal shape, but the end of body and cap ring are rounded. The base material is a pearlescent gray resin with sterling silver parts. The silver edges are decorated by beautiful guilloche called Art Deco. Filling system is cartridge-converter by international format. Cap on thread with “long” closing/opening in 3 turns and single-start thread.

Don't know what's more beautiful, your pen or your handwriting. I wish I could write like that

Avtoruchka “Soyuz” AR-102 (АР2.1.102 У) - (made in USSR) 1987

Since this model is the successor of the AR-96(one review and second review) model, it almost completely repeats its design with minor changes. The pen itself is one of the variants of the most common design in the USSR production(late period) with a piston filling system. The transparent plastic ink reservoir is screwed into the section by left-hand thread, but some refer this construct to modern built-in(captive) converters. Inside the container there is a piston with silicone head and plastic rod, which are driven by a plastic knob, fastened with a plastic nut from the end of the ink tank. The cap (on friction) and the body are made of brushed steel color metal, one of the most wear-resistant versions. Differences from the higher model AR-96 are: a) the absence of a transparent, orange ink window for controlling the ink level, which is why the section itself has become a little longer; b) the cap top is made of metal and of higher height; c) clip of the same steel color as the body.

Visconti Homo Sapiens Dark Age, Midi, Piston filler (made in Italy)

Actually, this model is completely identical to the models of the Homo Sapiens series: designed in cylindrical shape with slightly rounded ends. The body material is made of a special material based on basalt lava and special resin. The filling system is defined by the manufacturer as piston, but in fact it is a build-in converter (captive converter). The cap is made of the same material and is attached to a special bayonet, named by the manufacturer as a Hook safe lock. The only significant difference between this model and the classic Homo Sapiens is the coating of all metal accents by shiny black by galvanic treatment.

Andrew really enjoyed your blog on Visconti. I wonder if it's coincidence that both the former and Montegrappa suffer from quality control?
The difference between the two nibs is quite significant, both being fine.
But most of all I enjoyed your sketch. I study them religiously

suffer from quality control?

Thank you! And you are welcome! Unfortunately, all modern fountain pen factories, regardless of brand, have reduced quality control and this is strange given the constant increase in prices for these products. Alas, the products of Italian manufacturers are noticed by me to a greater extent (of course, with the exception of Chinese manufacturers).

Hi everyone! Today I want to show another “masterpiece” of the Chinese fountain pen industry – the implementation of morphing in reality.

Wing Sung 628 (made in China) Q/YQUB 1040

The design of this pen is made in the shape of a classic torpedo or a cigar, for whom it is more convenient to name it, of black resin reminiscent of “precious”, since it glows in the same dark red in the light. The filling system is cartridge-converter, but the format of Japanese brand from Big Three – Sailor – was taken as a basis. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, closing/opening in 1.5 turns

Cross Solo Classic 806-2M Navy BL CL (made in USA) 1996

The shape of this tool is cylindrical with tapered ends. The body material is dark blue plastic, but the tops on both sides are made of black plastic, like the section. Filling system – cartridge-converter, proprietary Cross format, for converter second type 8751 without thread (like Cross Townsend). Cap on thread, two-start thread, closing/opening in 1.5 turns.

S.T. Dupont Classique Mk2 Godron (made in France) 1980-1999 41170M

The shape of this pen is straight cylindrical with flat ends, which is made in accordance with the fashion trends of their time and the popularity of the legendary Italian model Aurora Hastil, which I mentioned in the previous review. There is an opinion that this body of the first generation models were made entirely of sterling silver, but the body of the second generation models are silvered. But if a yellow metal similar to brass is visible inside the main body, then the cap is made of a solid material, so I will assume that the cap is still silver, and the body is made of jewelery brass with rolled(?) silver. I did not find the stamp of 925 sterling silver either on the case or on the cap. The design has a ribbed shape with deep grooves, which the manufacturer called Godron. The filling system is cartridge-converter by international format. Cap on friction which closes with S.T. Dupont’s branded click is well known to the fans of Dupont’s lighters.

Pilot Custom 743 w|FA nib (made in Japan) FKK-3000R-B-FA

This tool repeats in almost everything the Pilot Custom 742 with FA nib, which I previously reviewed, with the exception of small nuances that I will show in updates. The shape of the body is a cigar (torpedo) with rounded ends and is made of “precious” black resin because it also glows red in the backlight. The filling system is a cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Pilot format, all converters from start Con-20 to the top Con-70 can be installed in the body. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, opening/closing in 1.5 turns.

Greetings friends! Today I want to show you a very unusual tool from the “limited edition” of S.T. Dupont, which will appeal to James Bonds fans, as well as fans of guns and bladed weapons.

S.T. Dupont Olympio James Bond Limited Edition 2004 in Black PVD(made in France) 481007

It is difficult to characterize the overall shape of this tool straight away, but it can be said to be typical of the basic current model of S.T. Dupont Olympio: cylindrical, slightly tapering towards the ends. The cap have smoothed end and body have is flat top. Body and cap material is stainless steel with black gun metal finish. The filling system is cartridge-converter by international format, although it is usually meant to use only cartridges, but more on that below. Cap on friction with branded Dupont click at the end.

If you really dream about something, then sooner or later have chance will turn up that will allow you to realize your dream. So I, have always considered this model one of the most attractive in modern pens due to its sunny, warm and maximally positive colors. So, in spite of the past summer but coming golden autumn …

Delta Dolcevita Medium (made in Italy) DV80187

This pen have a classic cylindrical shape with flat tops. The section, cap and end of the body are made of black resin, while the central part of the body is made of pieces of fiery orange resin, which the manufacturer called terra cotta orange color. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of the international format, but the native converter has a thread for more stable connection to the section. Cap on thread, 3-start thread, closing/opening in 3/4 turn.

I completely agree with you, for me the main thing is also the nib. But I'm a sophisticated user who has tried over 300-400 different pens already. I have comfortable, pleasant, loved ones, and there are simply ones that I like externally. They are pens just liked to me and that says it all. I very liked modern Italian pen for it's exterior, but there are also absolutely gorgeous vintage Italian pens that are all great in both the nib and the body.

ps: but there are other writers who, on the contrary, consider a smooth and hard nib to be the height of perfection. Everyone should have a place on earth :)

Montblanc (Writers Edition) Alexandre Dumas LE (made in Germany) 1996

This large tool is based on the higher serial model Montblanc Meisterstuck 149, but not in the shape of a cigar(streamline), but in the shape of stright cylinder with flat tops, like the more famous Ernest Hemingway model. The barrel of this model is made of resin marble texture, and the rest of the part from dark brown resin, not black as it might appear in the photos. The camera, unfortunately, cannot show such a large dynamic density. Through the backlight, the resin glows not red as ordinary vlack pen, but a dark amber light. The filling system is piston-filler. Cap on thread, 3-start thread, closing/opening in 1 with 1/4 turns.

Hello everybody! About 2 years ago I already reviewed this early version, and today I want to show the current, actual version.

Caran d’Ache Varius Ivanhoe (Swiss made) model: 4490.014

The shape of this pen is cylindrical body with hexagonal cap made of brass and silver or rhodium plated. What parts are by rhodium or silver the manufacturer does not specify :). The ends of the pen on both sides have a narrowed and smoothly rounded flat cylindrical shape. The filling system is a cartridge converter of the international format. Cap on thread, closing/opening in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Hello everyone! Another tool come to my service from described on the site model, so I am adding info to the old post. The problem is that the tip has partially worn off and the line width has grown a lot from the factory one.

Sailor Professional Gear Black ST 21K Gold Rhodium Plated (made in Japan) 11-2037-220

Actually the Professional Gear series (in a simplified usage ProGear) is a “parallel line” of the 1911 lineup, the difference is only in the tops. While the 1911 series is a cigar shape, ProGear is a flat-top design. The rest of the body is also made of black resin. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its own propietary format Sailor. Cap on thread, 2-lead body thread, cap closure in 1 3/4 turns.

Hello everybody! Today I have another slim designed tool and heir to the Aurora Hastil design.

Lamy CP1 Black (made in Germany) L056-F

The shape of this pen is a thin, regular-shaped cylinder with flat tops, made of stainless steel and coated by matt lacquer. True, when I first took at this pen I seemed (or wanted to think) that the body was made of anodized brass, but it is evident that it is inexpediently expensive. The filling system is cartridge(T10)-converter(Z27), its proprietary Lamy format. Cap on snap.

Lately, I try not to duplicate reviews of pens that already have posts, I just add info to the same post. But the color of this tool just drives me crazy, so I decided to do a personal post for it.

Montblanc Meisterstuck 146R|Bordeaux LeGrand (made in Germany) 1996

The shape of this tool is exactly the same as more wellknown Montblanc 146 | LeGrand is a cigar-shaped, made of Bordeaux dark red resin, although some call it Burgundy. But in general, in truth, if “Bordeaux” is a clear red color, only dark, then “Burgundy” is a dark red color with small amount of blue tone, i.e. colder in shade. Probably, this resin is also precious because it also glows by red in backlight, which is not surprising :). The filling system is piston-filler. Cap on thread, 3-start thread, opening/closing in 1 with 1/4 turn.

Hello everybody! Today I want to show you a not quite ordinary pen from a well-known and less-unknown brand at the same time. This one has difficult fate, but I hope it will be happy fate 🙂

Tibaldi Bentley Brookland Continental LE (made in Italy)

The body is made of handcrafted aluminum and lacquered by the color of the Bentley signature finishes, in this case Beluga Black (also has in Silver Lake or Magenta). The body is cylindrical, but the end has a square section. The general shape reminds me a torpedo from the World War II. The filling system is a cartridge-converter in the international format. Cap on thread, single-start thread, opening in 1 and 3/4 turns.

I have already reviewed several models of this reborn brand, but now I want to introduce, as I understand it, to the second after prime model in modern range.

Conklin All American Southwest Turquoise Omniflex (made in USA) CK71696

The shape of this tool is large, cigar-shaped, with completely rounded ends. The pen is made of translucent acrylic of mixed several colors (turquoise, brown, sand) named “Southwest Turquoise” and, most likely, the leitmotif was sunny California with its coasts, beaches and ocean. Filling system is cartridge-converter by international format. Cap on thread, 2 turns to open/close.

Thanks you too and welcome!!!

Greetings friends! Not so long ago I showed a limited edition pen of this brand dedicated to James Bond, and today I want to show the actual basic for LE model in XL (oversized) format.

S.T. Dupont Olympio XL Palladium Doue Cap (made in France) 481350

Another pen is shaped like a torpedo or submarine, which is cylindrical and slightly tapering towards the ends. From the body, the end is flat, and from the cap it is smoothed. The body material is traditionally brass, where the cap is palladium plated, and the main body is covered by branded Chinese lacquer. Filling system – cartridge-converter, international format. Cap on friction with branded click completing the closure.

Thank you! A you ask about modern pens or from all history period?
If we talk about modern pens, then over the past six months I realized that I had unconsciously become an adherent of the Pilot brand. http://lenskiy.org/2021/09/my-pilots-pens-family/
But in addition to Pilot, I also like a few other designs, like my Aurora Optima Riflessi or MB 146 Bordeaux, in general I like simple things. If we talk for the whole history, then I will give preference to almost any instrument made in the period 1890-1930 because of the fantastic nibs that they knew how to make in those days. I love soft and flexible nibs :)

Hey! Not so long ago I reviewed one of the most beautiful modern pen Delta Dolcevita Medium, and today I want to show a special edition dedicated to models of the early 20th century but in modern oversized format.

Delta Clear Button Filler Demonstrator Limited Edition (made in Italy) Oversize

A tool have classic cylindrical shape with flat tops. The center piece is made of clear acrylic, both caps and section are made of black acrylic. This pen has a filling system that is unusual by modern standards, namely the button-filler, thus the company paid tribute to the heyday and rise of the culture of fountain pen writing. Cap on thread, 3-start thread, open/closing in 1 turn.

How do you add feedback?

Coarser abrasive, but very carefull. Much depends on the material of the tip, some brand have harder, some others it is softer. But if 12000 grit and less are needed for smoothness, then 8000, and sometimes even 6000 and even 4000 are suitable for greater feedback.

Well, there are different users, some like Sailor, some like Aurora, and some like Parker 51. For some, smooth is a plus, while others cease to understand when they write, and when nib don't touches the paper, it's so smooth :) All people are different and it is good))))

I will allow myself to add another Falcon to the theme, because it is in an interesting color 🙂

Pilot Namiki Falcon Purple (Elabo) SF (made in Japan) 15661

The tool is a cylindrical shape with slightly tapered and flat ends. The material of the body is purple resin. The filling system is cartridge/converter, of the proprietary Pilot format. The feed is made of a bluish translucent plastic, typical for Pilot (since the 70s), and is mounted with nib in section on friction. The shape of feed is made in such a way that the complex beak-like shape of the nib fits snugly against the feed in only one position. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, closure in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Hello to all! I have several brands on my site with their references to the historical past, such as Montegrappa, Conklin, Kaweco etc, and now it’s time to get acquainted with a similar reverence for its history from the famous Montblanc company.

Montblanc Heritage Collection 1912 (made in Germany) 109049

The design of this pen is reminiscent of the pens from the early 20th century model known as “Safety pen”. The main distinguishing feature of these pens was the retractive nib hidden in the body and this model is no exception. Now this type of pen called “Retractable” because the nib is retractable, but the refillin system is not “Eyedropper”. The body is made of black lacquered brass, while the cap is made of branded precious resin. The ends are slightly rounded, but the body is classic cylindrical and almost straight. The manufacturer claims the filling system as piston, but in fact it is built-in converter (captive converter). Cap on thread, single-start thread, opening/closing in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Hey! This autumn has turned out under the banner of Lamy and today it will be the third review of this brand. This time I want to show you one of the flagships of the modern Lamy pens.

Lamy Imporium Matte Black w|14K EF (made in Germany) 092-BlkBlk

This pen has a slightly futuristic design and when closed it looks a bit like a torpedo from the Second World War, and with cap removed, it looks like some kind of intergalactic stellar ship. On the side of the body, this pen has a flat end, and on the side of the cap it has a rounded end. Body material – stainless steel with matted black PVD coating, but clip, body top and ring before nib in black glossy lacquer. The filling system is cartridge (T10)/converter (Z27) by its proprietary Lamy format. Cap on thread, closing/opening in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Hello everybody! I have already reviewed this model in both Chartres Blue and Bourgogne, but since this model has rhodium accents I decided to make a personal post, and not add to the existing ones.

Platinum #3776 Century Black Diamond Transluscent (made in Japan) PNB-15000CR #7

The shape of this pen is standard for Century – cigar-shaped, the material of body is translucent black-ash-colored resin called by company as AS resin. All metal accents are rhodium plated. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of their proprietary Platinum format. Cap on thread, 3-start thread, opening/closing in 1.5 turns.

Thanks! It all depends on the style of use. Of course, writing by extra thin nib with less than ideal vision is not comfortable, but for sketches, a thin nib is better because it makes it easier to control shading.

After Christmas holidays, I wanted to summarize how my year 2021 went: 54 new reviews, 20 updates were written, many pens were serviced and repaired, and a lot of new ink tested. Many thanks to all old and new friends, those who supported me, those who commented, those who collaborated, those who inspired me. To all with the coming holidays, wish to everybody the great mood, I love everyone and fountain pens too! :)

Hello to all! Summing up the results with a collage, I was not going to do more reviews this year, but then I decided to share my “disappointment of the year” and not move this weight into new year. I know many people like this brand as one of the most inexpensive and high quality piston-filling systems, but my experience disappointed me and I’m unlikely to ever be interested in this brand’s pens. Maybe Taiwan is not exactly China, but very very close …

TWSBI Diamond 580ALR Prussian Blue F (made in Taiwan) M7447930

This pen is a 10-faced shape by transparent plastic body with lacquered aluminum accents in blue-green color named by the brand as Prussian Blue. The filling system is piston filler, bushing, rod and actuator are also made of aluminum and coated by Prussian Blue. Cap on thread, 2-lead thread, closing-opening in 1 turn.

Probably the last hi and last review(post) this year! After the previous TWSBI, I would like to end the year on positive note. I have already done several reviews of the Pilot Capless in different colors, and today I want to show the younger model of Capless family.

Pilot Caples Deсimo Burgundy EF (made in Japan) FCT-15SR-R-EF

This model is completely identical to the previously shown Vanishing Point with the only exception that it is slightly smaller (thinner) in details: body, clip, rings; but at the same time with same nib unit inside. Main body made from anodized aluminum(Burgundy in this version), clip cap from stainless steel, clip from rhodium plated special steel, other metal parts and botton from rhodium plated brass. Filling system is cartridge-converter, proprietary Pilot format. There is no cap and nib is pulled out from the body using a button at the end of the pen.

Hello everyone! First review this year and let it start with a non-ordinary fountain pen. Prior to the 2015 Imporium model (reviewed at the end of last year), the Dialog 3 was the top model of Lamy.

Lamy Dialog 3 Matte Black (made in Germany)

This model is unusual, first of all, because it is a fountain pen with retractable nib, which there are not so many now produced, moreover, this model also has a feature – retractable clip. The shape of this pen is 100% cigar shape without reservations :). The body is made of aluminum and anodized to matt black color. Filling system is cartridge (T10)/converter(Z27) of its proprietary Lamy format. There is no cap, the nib is moved by rotating one part of body relative to ther on 180 degrees.

Hey! Today I have another thin pen and another member of Slim design, heiress of the Aurora Hastil traditions, a model from the French fashion house Cartier.

Cartier. Must de Cartier “Trinity” in Lapis Lazuli (made in France) 3205

This pen is a thin cylindrical shape made of brass and covered by lacquer which called “Lapis Lazuli”. (A small note: Lapis Lazuli is a rare mineral of complex composition; usually found in alkaline igneous and carbonate rocks. It has a bright blue and deep blue, sometimes violet-blue or indigo-blue color, has a uniform texture, and in the overwhelming mass of the stone have is a scattering of golden pyrite against a dark blue background.) The metal elements are goldplated with theoreticaly solid gold rings on the cap. The filling system is a cartridge-converter of the international standard. Cap on friction, with a slight click at the end of closure.

Very well done, perfect pairing of Trinity. The detail on the sleeve is remarkable. I have such a hard time with thin pens, and was just using a lovely Cross/Waterman pen that I purchased from a favorite (and now passed) pen vendor, and wishing so much it wasn't so very slim. Thank you, as always, for these reviews and art - they are appreciated even if I don't remark on each and every one.

Andrew, really enjoyed the review and was mesmerized, like Jon, by the sleeve details.
You don't say, much about the nib and how it wrote.
Can you tell us more about that? Is it just a jewel piece or does it write really well?

Not really. He sure can write and sketch with anything. But sometimes, the experience is less than agreeable (Quite a bit of Italian pens/TWSBI and I believe the Lamy Dialog3 for ex. )

I see, fair enough. I would be all the more impressed if those were the results of a less-than-satisfactory pen experience. Let us see what the artist has to say.

Thanks guys!
As you can understand, in a fairly short time (5-6 years) I to try a lot of different nibs from very vintage to last modern. Usually I use my impressions from the nib when they are bright - like very pleasant or very unpleasant. If I don't write anything about it, it means that it is usually ordinary. Those in this case, this nib did not evoke any strong emotions in me, it is quite rigid, it is enought smooth(no superglide, no branded feedback), writes without any problems in everyday use, does not dry, does not wet (remember the feed is ebonite). Those this is an ordinary EDC:) tool if you do not look at the luxury exterior(brand) and thin body. I have no negative attitude towards him, but also no rejoicing, exept outstanding Lapis Lazulli lacquer)).

Beautiful work and great set of pens here Andrew, Also I like your ink chosen for this Sketch too.

I like slim pens and already have few but they are not hi-end pens like yours here.
So They haven't much guaranty of their nibs been fine quality. Slim pens in my hand gives a feeling of dip pens and works fine in my hand.
Thanks always for your share of your passion.

Hi! Somehow it happened that I passed the stage of most budget pens in my hobby and after a certain number of Chinese pens “some to try” I went to vintage ones, and from them I went on to modern. However, not without the help of those who sent(and send now) me pens for adjust and services(big thanks to they), so I tried a lot of different pens, from different price segments. And today I want to show one of the budget models of the big Japanese three.

Pilot Prera Ivory (made in Japan) FPR-3SR-I-F

The shape of this pen is a straight cylindrical body from light beige plastic, with flat ends, and overall, the shape is most similar to the Pelikan M150-M200 models. The filling system is a cartridge-converter of proprietary Pilot format. The cap on friction, fits with a slight inertia and click at the end.

Another similar earlier reviewed tool has arrived for service, only in this time it is not necessary to reduce the tip size, but to change the shape to Italic.

Sailor 1911 Standard Black GT 14K Gold (made in Japan)

The shape of this pen is no different from the higher model Sailor 1911 Large reviewed earlier: the same cigar-shaped with pointed round ends, the same gold-plated fittings, the same black “precious resin” that “glows red” in the backlight … The only difference, looking ahead besides the nib, is the overall sizes, which are slightly smaller. The filling system is proprietary, by own Sailor format, cartridge-converter. Cap on thread, full closure in 1.5 turns, 2-start thread.

So you are retuning most of the pens?? Or prefer custom grind sometimes.
I love Pilot and sailor pens! I have an average sets of pens from them. They are the only one I prefer and mostly my pens are Medium to fine nibs. They are amazing and many complain they have NAILS AND REDIGE ---- Mon-buttery -----nibs. I hate butter !!!!
I like my nibs to sing and scream when they are gliding on papers.
I find vintage nibs are ideal for many works as none of the two nibs( in the same brand ) are having similar character. They are all different . For that reason I love vintage pens.
That is the feedback on papers that gives characters to the writing. It'll give a shapes and rhythm too to your lettering. So all ranges of pens in Sailor ,Pilot and Platinum pens with Fine to Fine medium nibs are great into cursive writing.

I find vintage nibs are ideal for many works as none of the two nibs( in the same brand ) are having similar character. They are all different . For that reason I love vintage pens.

I agree with you 100%. I also really like vintage pens, especially 1920-1940s, but nibs I prefer 1900s-1920s. True, these early pens like Aikin Lambert or Paul E Wirt are very thin for my hand :(.

As for modern pens - yes, basically this is what they ask me to fix or order grind. I also like modern pens, but more in appearance (some). Regarding feedback - I also dislike oilly oil, but I also dislike sandpaper. But I do what the owners of pens ask me to do, and everyone has different tastes. Basically, of course, they ask to do it smoothly, but sometimes there are opposite desires))

About Pilot, Sailor and Platinum - I don't like hard rigid nibs (like nails) and therefore I don't like Platinum, but I just love my Platinum 3776 Music which I regrind to Crisp Italic)). I love the Pilot pens a lot, I have a lot of Pilot pens mostly with soft nibs(Falcon), but my main drawing tool is the Capless VP with custom UEF nib. Now my dream is 845 in Vermillion :)). I am neutral about Sailor, but I like the Realo model which I don't have and I like Zoom nib as a good material for further customization)).

Hello world! I already have several reviews on modern models this brand and Faber-Castell, and Graf von Faber-Castell, but there are always nuances and features that I want to know and share to you.

Graf von Faber-Castell Guilloche Black (made in Germany) 146540-45 2

The shape of body of this tool is strictly cylindrical with branded design of cap that expands to the top and for some reason reminds me of old hand pump for a well :). The body of pen made from precious black resin with guilloche wavy lines, with hand-lacquered and repeatedly polished. Metal elements are made of brass and rhodium plated. The filling system is cartridge-converter, international format, but the model complete by branded converter. Cap on friction, closes with small and soft click at the end.

Hey! So, gradually and slowly, I got to the first more or less serious modern instrument of this brand. No, of course, I already did a review on one of the smallest Kaweco Liliput pens, but that’s more like pampering and not a serious writing tool :))

Kaweco Dia2 Black CT w|14K nib F (made in Germany)

This model is reminiscent of the early model of Kaweco Dia (83, 85, 87, 89, 90) from 1934-1939 of the last century. The body is cylindrical, with almost flat ends and characteristic notches arounds on both ends. The cap material is black opaque resin, while the body material is black lacquered brass, which adds extra weight to the pen. Filling system is cartridge-converter by international format. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, closing/opening in 1 turn.

Hello everybody! I already have a review on exactly the same pen and usually I just add small changes to the old post as an addon. However, regrind nib to Crisp Italic is always interesting, so I will allow myself to make a personal post.

Conklin "Mark Twain" Signature Crescent-filler in Black Chased Hard Rubber w|custom Crisp Italic M 14K nib(made in USA|Italy) ~2007-2010

This is another modern model based on the historical one, and therefore the shape of this pen is as close as possible to the original (Conklin 2NL) – cylindrical with flat end on the body and rounded on the cap. This model is made of black ebonite with fine guilloche branded wavy pattern. Filling system is Crescent-filler, like the historical with a rubber sac. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, closing/opening in exactly 1 turn.

Cross Townsend Lapis Lazuli w|18K nib (made in USA) 796-FA

This is a rather large pen of the characteristic recognizable shape of the Townsend models. The body is made of brass and lacquered by “lapis lazuli” texture. Filling system is cartridge/converter, proprietary Cross format (green converter without thread 8751 early 8930). Cap on friction, closes with effort (5mm) with click at the end.

Hello to all! I give credit to this brand for its significant contribution to the history of fountain pens, but I have never had a strong desire to purchase pens from this brand. What I dislike the most is inlaid nibs, probably because I understand that they are the most problematic to service. But still, I have one review of vintage model, and this one will be the first for modern one.

Sheaffer Legacy Heritage (made in USA)

The shape of this pen is cylindrical with slightly tapered and flat ends. The main material is brass, while the body is covered by black lacquer reminiscent of organic (Chinese lacque?) and the cap is palladium plated with 22k gold-plated accents. The section is made of black plastic. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Sheaffer format. Cap on friction with slight click at the end.

Hey! Real Italian beauty: magnificent and terrible at the same time.

Visconti Opera Club Orange LE w|14K old style nib (made in Italy)

The model includes to the Visconti “Square and Circle” line and is a square in cross section with smoothed corners, the identical to the model Visconti Black Guilloche which I reviewed earlier. The material of the body is orange resin, but not solid color, but in the likeness of mother-of-pearl, with small darker inclusions. The filling system is standard – cartridge/converter international format, in the section there is an internal thread for twisting branded converters. Cap on thread, 4-way thread, closing/opening in 2 turns.

I already have 2 reviews on the Ivanhoe models of this brand, and today I want to show, probably, one of the most popular modern models of this brand.

Caran d’Ache Ecridor Chevron (Swiss made) model: 958.286

The body of this tool is hexagonal shape with slightly rounded ends. Main material of body is a brass covered by palladium. The body also have guilloche in form of chevron (V series applied by laser engraving). Filling system is cartridge-converter international standard. Cap on friction, closes with click at the end(Snap-on), similar to S.T. Dupont, but with higher pitch and tighter closure.

Personally I think military there is nothing the West can actually do to help without risking further escalation which might not be controllable anymore.
Economical I hope Russia will be hit as hard as possible, but even there I‘m not sure how hard the sanctions really will be as the economical dependencies between Russia and Western Europe are strong.
Latest since today for everybody it is clear that Russia is no democracy anymore and the tsar is back.
Real change may only come from Russian people themselves if enough people are against the war.
I hope you will be able to stay connected with our community.

Try to stay save.

Dear Andrew,

It's hard to face the forces of darkness especially when Tzar Putin is flexing his muscles. After all Stalin did to your people, it's sad to see history is repeating itself.
My thoughts are with you and your family, your people. Stay Strong.

I should think we can show compassion toward Andrew, imagining how difficult of a situation this must be for him and his loved ones. We certainly can wish for his continued well-being, share those thoughts, and hope for or even look forward to more peaceful times when we all can enjoy his reviews and art.

But some feel it necessary to add commentary not relating to that, injecting their views or assessments of political events (war being the last resort of failed politics). It's understandable, but doesn't render inappropriate Chrissy's request to keep that aspect where it belongs - which is the politics forum. The reasons some may decline to venture there are the very reasons political opinions shouldn't be posted here.

Thank you, Chrissy, for gently reminding us; and thank you eachan for your gracious reconciliation with Chrissy.

I didn't find your comment particularly problematic, but I think Chrissy rightly predicts where this could potentially go - blaming leaders and countries other than Putin and Russia, what other people should or should not have done, etc...

So I started a thread for those who feel the need to comment in the politics forum. You can go to it directly via This link (https://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/36636-Ukraine-outrage-and-analysis), post what you like, and avoid the rest of the pig-sty. I asked there that we please try not to turn it into the typical partisan rhetoric, other than the outrage where it's rightly directed; and ideally (although a bit wishful...) a place where we can share information.

Andrew - god bless you and your nation.

I won’t tell you for a long time what and how, but I will say that it was very scary when cruise missiles flew over the house, explosions and automatic bursts were heard. When we left, we took only the most necessary things, there was no time for pens. I took only my 4 favorite pens, but then gave them to the children at parting "as keepsake" because the future was unknown. At first, I only had a notebook, mechanical pencil, and tablet, so I didn't post anything on fountain pen forums, but I kept writing on my website whose work was restored on the 3rd or 4th day. A few days ago I returned to Kyiv.

It is quite difficult in the current situation for me, I mean russia’s military invasion to Ukraine, to return to normal life (as far as possible), but we need to start from somewhere. On February 23, the day before the war, I prepared another review, but I simply did not have enough time to write it and I postponed it to the next day. But the next day … the war began … and it was no longer up to the fountain pens. The first 2-3 days, most people were in shock and could not do anything at all. Then I began to draw on the Ukrainian themes, on the one hand, to relieve stress and, on the other hand, to express my protest against the ongoing events and tell about war to you all. Then, due to the serious danger to my family and thanks to friends(Dima, Ksenia, Luka), we left Kyiv and took only the most necessary things, which did not include pens. A few days ago I returned at home and so let’s try to start:

Lamy 2000 Stainless Steel w|14K M nib (made in Germany) L02M

In shape, it is the exact twin of the classic macrolon model – a cylindrical body with slightly narrowed and flat tops, but the material of this model is brushed stainless steel. The filling system is classic piston-filler. The cap on friction, closes with a light click at the end.

Hello! This is my first fountain pen review since the beginning of the war and the russian army’s invasion of Ukraine.

Cross Century II Chrome (made in Ireland) 3509-F

The shape is straight, cylindrical with conical top, identical to the previously shown Century II models. The body is made of brass and stainless steel with chromium plated. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of proprietary Cross format, using a converter type 8756 (with thread). Cap on friction.

Thanks! FYI-I prefer insanely smooth so I won't be trying to add feedback.

Well, there are different users, some like Sailor, some like Aurora, and some like Parker 51. For some, smooth is a plus, while others cease to understand when they write, and when nib don't touches the paper, it's so smooth :) All people are different and it is good))))

I need all my pens to sing with feedback. I mostly go for vintage nibs as most the time every pen is unique and have different character in writing.
As far as feedback concern most vintage nibs have that effect in writing. Also added springy action in well controlled pressure gives a nice flow to it.

Hi everybody! Today, by chance, I want to show you the flagship of one of the oldest but still existing brands and give a little honor to another Ukrainian hero – Oleksandr Makhov!

Waterman Edson Ruby Red (made in France) F11006

The shape of body is torpedo-shaped, tapering to the ends, very similar to Parker 51 shape but on an enlarged scale. The body and grip is made of translucent resin by dark ruby color with brass threaded collar. Most reviewers believe that this nib is inlaid, but this is not the truth, although it has an unusual shape and looks like extension of body. Instead, the section is inlaid with gold stripe, which on the side of the nib personally reminds me of a stylized letter W. The filling system is cartridge-converter by international standard. Cap on snaps (3 pieces at the end of section).

Hello! Today, a small review of typical EDC pen. It is one of the youngest representatives of the Japanese industry with solid gold nib.

Pilot Custom Heritage 91 Black SF (made in Japan) FKVHN-12SR-BSF

Heritage is a legacy, so the shape of the body is similar to the early fountain pens – straight cylindrical with flat ends. In general, this model is considered middle-class and is the sister of the more common model Custom 74. The body is made of black resin with rhodium-plated fittings. Filling system – cartridge-converter, its proprietary Pilot format. Cap on thread, 2-way threads, opening/ losing in 1 1/4 turns.

Hello everybody! Today I want to tell a little about one of the youngest Italian brands, but at the same time with a big tradition – this is the Maiora brand. I would also says personal thanks to Nino Marino, Oksana Kit and Gianfranco Raimo for their support during this difficult time for me and my country.

Maiora Mytho Origine (made in Italy) handcrafted with heart

I would like to emphasize that this model has a purely Italian, recognizable, iconic design – straight cylindrical shape with conical ends. The main material of the body is black and orange resin. I don’t know is Delta first use this texture or not, but this texture with this colors it mostly associated with Dolcevita line. Filling system is cartridge/converter by the international standard, and by the way the converter with thread. Cap on thread also with 3-way thread, opening/closing in 1 turn.

You often post two photos of the nib, with and without the logo. Why?

It's not one side, it's two sides: top and bottom. This is sometimes important, especially for vintage nibs, where code information can be hidden. Another interesting is texture on some nibs from glossy to brushing. And photo of the reverse side gives information on the method of putting data: stamp or engraving. So it's no less interesting than everything else))

So, I could not resist :). It seemed to me after the test that 0.35mm would be too much for portraits, so I decided to reduce the size of nib and ink flow a bit, and regrind it into Drawing nib. This is not quite a review, but for some reason I wanted to share it.

Hao! Once upon a time, when I was just starting to get interested to fountain pens and was not so tempted many pens, I was holding this model in my hands and I think it was didn’t comfortable pen like as Vanishing Point which is one of my favorite modern fountain pens for drawing. I also did a review at Decimo, so I decided to get acquainted with Fermo again and bought it late last year almost along with the steel Lamy 2K.

Pilot Namiki Capless Fermo Diamond Silver (made in Japan) FCF-2MR-DS-F

The body in shape is similar to Vanishing Point but slightly different in small nuances, I can say that it is more straight than VP. Main material is brass coated by metallic silver lacquer with rhodium-plated stainless steel furniture. Filling system is cartridge/converter, by its proprietary Pilot format. Capless format, ie without(less) cap, so there is no cap, the nib is retractive by turning the handle(knob) at the end (~ 1 full turn).

Hello everybody! Today I want to show you another one of the modern Italian fountain pens brand. This pen came to me last fall, but the review I can make is only now.

Leonardo Officina Italiana Momento Magico Black glossy (made in Italy)

I can say that the shape of this pen has a purely Italian design – straight cylindrical form, with slightly tapered ends, conical tops, and traditional Italian clip in the form of roller. Body material – black glossy resin with rhodium-plated metal accents. The pen has an ash-colored viewing window for ink monitoring, which is slightly visible when cap is closed. Filling system – is a real piston-filler, tank volume – 1.5ml. Cap on thread, close/open in 5/6 turns and 3-way thread.

When have been fascinated or interested by fountain pens for some time, some preferences regarding shape, color, and size are formed. So, this model is one of the most attractive for me both in terms of size, color and shape, unfortunately the nib is just ordinary boring. I already reviewed this model, but only in the classic green color, so:

Pelikan Souverän® M800 Red-black stripes (made in Germany)

In shape, it is a usual Pelikan model with a classic cylindrical shape and almost flat tops. The body is made from black resin and modern celluloid(celluloid acetate) of red-black stripes design. Because this is a new pen that works well, I did not disassemble the piston mechanism, but I will do it at the first opportunity and update the post. The filling system is a real piston-filler. Cap on thread, with 3-way thread, and open|closure at 3/4 turn.

If you expect or long for something good long enough, sooner or later you will get it, but perhaps unfortunately, the requirements and expectations for this object are formed, subconsciously, much higher than for something else that you will receive by chance. So one of my dreams in the world of fountain pens was to have a traditional Urushi pen, especially after holding the Nakaya Cigar Kikyo, moreover, I even dreamed in the Aka Tamenuri color.

Wancher DreamPen True Urushi Aka-Tamenuri w|14K JoWo nib B size (handmade in Japan) true craftsmanship

It is common to call this shape “Torpedo” or “Cigar” as in the Montblanc Meisterstuk 149 or Sailor Large 1911 models, but in this case it is 100% true, because the edges of cap coincides to the body. The material is real Japanesse ebonite, laquered by real Urushi with complex multi-layer color from red to dark red/brown, which is called Aka-Tamenuri, which means “red laquer” in Japanese. The filling system is a cartridge/converter by International standard. Cap on thread with one-way threading, closes/opens in one full turn. Body without clip.

Hello everybody! Yesterday was such a day that: magnetic storms, the general feeling is not very good, and the sad mood came after the post about the fact that Japanese Urushi is not Japanese at all, but Vietnamese, but, but… I don’t remember to which pen personally I modified this nib, but it happened that I this nib had it lying free. So, while I’m thinking about what to do with original B nib, because B is useless to me, I decided to combine a good nib with beautiful pen.

Wancher DreamPen True Urushi Aka-Tamenuri w|custom UEF Noodler’s Flexible nib

There is no point in full review this pen, because I already did it the other day before, so everyone can go to the original Wancher DreamPen review. Regarding this modification. I have another original Noodlers Flex #6 (35) nib that has a slightly wider tail compared to the standard JoWo nib, and slightly more rounded arch, so I narrowed the tail of this nib a bit. Then I removed some material on the shoulders for more softness, and of course, reground tip, because the original tip was too thick for fine writing. This nib now looks like this:

Thanks Yazeh! Probably not, it is not the fact that it is made in Vietnam that disappoints, but the fact that the manufacturer hides it. I guess I would buy it anyway, because Nakaya is hard for me to reach, especially since I don't like Platinum nibs)).

BTW I forgot to mention that nib looks fantastic. Noodler's should team up with you, to make these new nibs. I wouldn't mind buying a couple of those nibs :)

I think that firstly, they have a nibgrinder themselves, and secondly, I sometimes write not very well about these nibs (I have several posts), and I once mentioned this Noodler`s and KanWrite are one and the same with production in India)). So I am not the best candidate for cooperation)). By the way, in all time I has 10 such nibs which passed through me, 9 of them I modified in the same way, so now I have one modified and one original, other 8 I sold many time ago.

Hi! Today, review of the most ordinary pen, just a pen and nothing more, a pen with big name that still comes to mind for many ordinary people when the question concerns writing instruments.

Parker IM Gun Metal CT (made in China) S0856240

An ordinary metal fountain pen by cylindrical shape, almost straight, with glossy metal flat tops. The body is brushed, then tinted to gun color and covered by laquer. The filling system is a cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Parker format. Cap on friction with click at the end.

If you would be interesting to see more photos of Sonnets and nibs, use the Parker Sonnet Cissele and Parker Sonnet Laque links.

Parker Sonnet Laque Midnight Blue (made in France) 2Q.1995

The body is cylindrical, slightly tapering with rounded end. Externally, it is a steel body covered by laque with speckled texture of black-blue colors called Midnight Blue. The filling system is a cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Parker format. Cap on friction with slight click at the end.

Sometimes it happens that is hold a seemingly good (notbad) pen, but without original nib, which is almost impossible to purchase separately, so what to do? A good tool should work, so I start looking for ways to fix it and at the end something works out)))

S.T. Dupont Olympio XL Black Chinese Lacquer w|custom non-original Italic M nib (made in France) 481574

I thought for a some time how to describe this shape of pen, because given our time and situation, I don’t want to compare it either with torpedoes or with submarines, so the shape resembles a baseball bat, slightly narrowed at the end and increases to the cap. This, one might say, is a common form for modern S.T.Dupont top models. The material of the body is brass, in this case covered by black “Chinese lacquer”. The filling system is cartridge-converter, International format, complete by a branded converter with red piston handle. The cap on friction with a branded click at the end similar to the famous sound of S.T.Dupont lighters (I already published the video and sound in one of the previous reviews of another Dupont pen).

Andrew, other permanent browns are either r& k Dokument brown or de atraments Document or artist brown.
I have tried several de atramentis document Inks, not the brown though, and have been rather impressed by behavior and quality.
Kakimori has also nice pigment inks, but the two sample I tried have long drying times.
And last I'll mention the driest inks ever, Gutenberg Urkundentinten IG G10.
It's a pale brown Ink, which is nice for washes... but very unpleasant with fie nibs ...

Thanks Yazeh! R&K is probably the first ink I'll try if everything goes well in the future. I've been thinking about them for a long time, about the Sketch Ink series. From DeAtramentis, I tried dokument blue, black and brown, I have a double reaction: the color is good(mean brown), but this ink is very liquid and more flow and needs in very good expensive paper, and second this ink is washable up to 30%, so in not every case is accessible.

Last year, 2 weeks before the start of the 11.11 sale, I bought this model in China, which, by the way, delivered for more than 2 months, and arrived after the New Year, but I’m not talking about that. So, overtaking the review, I will say that this is Aurora “for the poor”)). Not so long ago I saw a post on FB in which the author wrote that he does not see the difference in use between the Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 and its Chinese clone(!!), so, I can say that this pen is completely for they – who does not see the difference)) . I write all my reviews entirely based on my own impressions and I do not receive money for promoting products, and 99% of my pens I bought by my own money, so I have no loyalty or resentment should be attributed to me. And I am 100% against to the cloning policy that is inherent in the Chinese industry fountain pens.

Moonman Majohn T5 Black (made in China)

In appearance, this model is a replica of the well-known Aurora Optima model and has cylindrical shape slightly tapering towards to the ends with conical tops. The material of item is very similar to ordinary plastic, in this case black color, where the section, piston knob and top are made of glossy plastic, and the body with cap are made of matte plastic. The filling system is a true piston-filler, and has ink window for monitoring but with nuance. The nuance is that the piston does not move to the end and piston head is not visible in the window. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, closes/opens in 2.5 turns.

Faber-Castell Ondoro Black (made in Germany)

According to the manufacturer, the tool has a classic-style shape, but it is difficult to agree with this because it is a hexagonal form with slightly rounded tops. The body is made of “precious” resin, polished to a high gloss with cap is made of chromed metal. Filling system – cartridge/converter by international standard. Cap on friction with light click at the end. The nib with a plastic feed is mounted on friction in plastic collar and screwed into the grip.

Hey! At the end of summer last year, I saw a video post on FB (I don’t remember the author) with a modern flexible nib made in India. The hand was very experiences and the work of the pen looked very attractive. In the description it was noted as Kanwrite Super Flex Gold nib second generation (v.2). I was already a little known with Kanwrite Flexible (aka Nodlers Flexible) steel nibs, so I decided that anything was possible and went searching on Internet. By chance, I came across a post on Reddit that mentioned these nibs and contacts directly to the manufacturer, I wrote and was answered by Sandeep Awasthi himself. We chatted for a bit, but in the end I bought a pen with two nibs, but I was only able to test it now, so let’s to see:

Kanpur Writers Kanwrite Heritage DT Orange Black (made in India) SKU: KW-HDT-01

According to the part of model name (Heritage), we have a classic cylindrical shape that taper slightly to the ends with flat tops. It stands out except for the shape of top on cap, which personally reminds me of some kind of top hat by respectable person in asian culture. According to the manufacturer, the body material is plastic (acrylic/CAB), but the smell was characteristic of Indian celluloid, which is known to many owners by Noodlers pens – CAB is cellulose acetate butyrate. This smell remained for almost 9 months, but now it is not as strong as it was at first. So I understand that the black part is acrylic, and the orange part is this celluloid. By the way, the orange part is not uniformly colored, and has inconspicuous streaks of a slightly darker color. The filling system is a real piston-filler. Cap on thread, two-starts threads, close/open in 2.5 turns.

So today’s promised continue – Titanium (Ti) Ultra Flex nib unit Kanwrite – welcome!
When I contacted Sandeep and say him about the video and asked him about the softest flex nib in particular, he said yes the 14K solid gold nib is the softest, but he personally recommends the titanium Ti Ultra Flex because it is more springy which it will be better in skilled hands. So I decided to order the Ti Ultra Flex too.

Thanks for the excellent reviews and intricate sketches.
A pity the waterfall feed wasn't suited to that nib. Couldn't you have tested it with the gold nib feed?

I wonder what will they do with the new Sheaffer line of inks since they have been recently rebranded and remade in China. ;)

Thank you to for reading! I specifically wanted to try it as it came from the factory. Of course, I will try it on the gold nib feed, maybe then on something else and probably modify these two nibs if it posible, but for right first review, it will be need to test as it is.

Regarding Sheaffer, there is a high probability that they will not touch anything at all for now, I think they will make parts in China where there is production, then bring them to India as parts to reduce taxes, then assemble pens and sell it in the domestic market at a competitive price. As it once was with Parker in Australia. Then we will see how it will be.

Cross Century II BlueWood w|18K nib (made in Ireland) 419-2MD BWD

The shape of the body is straight, cylindrical with a conical end, identical to the Cross Townsend model, but in a slightly smaller version, similar to the comparison of the Standard and Demi / Lady / Junior models. Hello friends! Probably everyone knows the Homo Sapiens models from Visconti, but not everyone knows that in addition to the traditional “Basalt lava” design the company produced also more traditional versions, even with cartridge-converter filling systems. And this is just such a model.

Visconti Homo Sapiens Elegance, Oversize (made in Italy) 767ST01PAD55-F

The shape of this pen is almost identical to the Visconti Homo Sapiens Steel Age which I described early, but differs in the material and filling system. Cylindrical shape with slightly rounded tops and a barrel-shaped cap. The material is black glossy resin. The filling system is a cartridge-converter of the international standard. Hello! I know that this model is probably one of the most popular modern models of fountain pens, although it is not without flaws. I don’t really like the clear bodies, and additional steps before use , but I bought it anyway to get a feel this pen, explore the design and to write this review. So let’s see.

Pilot Custom 823 Translucent Amber|Brown (made in Japan) w|14K Kanwrite Ultraflex nib FKK-3MRP-BN-KWF

This pen practically repeats the design of the Pilot Custom 743 model, except for the filling system and color. The body shape is a cigar (torpedo) with rounded tops and is made of translucent brown acrylic, but the section, plunger knob and cap top are made of dark brown opaque resin. The filling system is a plunger-filler, atypical for the Japanese industry, but partially modified to the vintage Japanese eyedropper. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, opening/closing in 1.5 turns.

I already have a few reviews of this brand’s unusual fountain pens, but they can never have too many)). Perhaps of all modern Italian brands, this one with the largest range of pen assortment products by model. So let’s take a look at another non-standard design.

Montegrappa Nero Uno Linea Red gold with 18K first-style F nib (made in Italy) ISNRC2AC

The shape of this writing instrument is unusual, because it is an octagonal with metal tops. Moreover, it is not just 8 faces, but also with transverse concentric grooves. The body material is black resin with fittings are red gold-plated, although they look like ordinary gold to the eye. The filling system is a cartridge-converter by the international format, but converter has a thread for better connection to the section. Cap on thread, closing/opening in 1 turn.

Hello to all fountain pen fans! Today I have a review for another tribute to a historical model, and today it is a pen from Pelikan.

Pelikan Classic M120 Iconic Blue Special Edition (made in Germany) 809726

The shape of this pen is quite popular in the 50s and 60s, which can be described as Streamline – cigar-shaped with rounded tops. As it is a tribute to the popular Pelikan 120 model, it repeats this shape, although due to modern trends, it has grown a bit in size. The body material is blue plastic with a blue ink window for monitoring. Filling system is traditionl piston-filler. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, 3/4 turn for closing/opening.

I decided to free up a little space in my pens that are not used, and upon checking, I was once again convinced that “this pen one from the best”:)) I think that this is one of the best pens from modern nibs for both writing and drawing sceneries of use.

Pilot Namiki Falcon (Elabo) w|SEF nib (made in Japan) 60740 (or FE-18SR-B-SEF)

The tool is a cylindrical shape with slightly tapered and flat ends. The material of the body is black resin, not “precious” :), but it glows in the light in the same dark-red color as the well-known Montblanc. Cap on thread , 2-start thread, closure in 1 and 3/4 turns.

Hello everybody! Today, a review of both an ordinary and an unusual pen. Ordinary, because it’s an entry-level pen with a regular-sized body and steel nib. And unusual, because the pen has a non-standard Zoom nib and the color is not quite ordinary.

Sailor Profit Casual Maroon w|Zoom nib (made in Japan) 11-0570-730

Actually, in terms of shape, the pen is no different from its international version, the Sailor 1911 Standard, and has a cigar-shaped form with taper rounded ends. But the color of the body is called Maroon, for those who are not in theme, it is a semi-dark red color, a little warmer than Burgundy, but not yet so dark red. The material itself is ordinary resin. The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Sailor format, the pen is complected with branded converter, which has an untypical yellow piston knob. Cap on thread, 2-start thread, closing/opening in 1.5 turns.

I don’t consider myself a collector and for me the most important thing in fountain pens is the nib (their properties), but there are such pens that I can’t refuse, although I understand that their nibs are quite ordinary. So this model is one of the same. I was never tempted on this pen by the photo before, but after I hold in my hands 146R for service, I just went crazy in desire to get one. The color by eyes when hold this pen in hands is simply awesome, so I understand popularity of this model.

Early I was surprised when I saw photos of pens of similar colors, different manufacturers from fpners, until I got hooked on it myself)). Somehow I really fell in love with this attractive Bordeaux colors)). Although I don’t plan to have anything else in these colors, I’m still happy to have these pens and share them with you. And I already have reviews of some other models from this brand, but this model is quite unique.

Sailor ProGear Realo Maroon with Gold trim and 21K Music nib (made in Japan) 11-3926-932

Actually, the Professional Gear series (in simplified ProGear) is a “parallel model line” of the 1911 model series, the only difference is the tops. If the 1911 model series have the shape of a cigar, then the ProGear have the shape of a truncated (“prepared for smoking”) cigar – cut-away design. The body is also made of resin by dark red color named Maroon. But the filling system, unlike all other models, is piston-filler. Cap on thread, 2-statrs thread, closes/opens in 1 3/4 turns.

Hi! In the absence of regular electricity, reviews now take twice as long. I’ve been dreaming about this model for several years, even contacted the local Pilot distributor last year, but to no avail, so after selling a few of my pens I decided to buy this pen, especially since I don’t know if I’ll ever get another chance to look at the current situation. But this is probably my last purchase in the world of fountain pens, because I decided to stop buying them. Of course, I will continue to do reviews for a while, because I still have pens that I bought earlier and did not have time to review. So let’s get to the review.

Pilot Custom 845 w|F nib (made in Japan) FKV-5MR-R-F

This is one of the two highest models of the Custom line and, unlike the younger ones, has a cylindrical shape with flat tops. The material of the body is black resin(or plastic?), but covered by red color Vermillion urushi varnish(allegedly in three layers). The resin is not (red)transparent in the light, so we will consider it not precious)). The filling system is cartridge-converter, of its proprietary Pilot format, and accepts all types of converters and cartridges of its brand. Cap on thread, 2-starts thread, opening/closing in 1.5 turns.

Hello to all fountain pen fans! In 2019, this brand shook the world pen community with its appearance. Of course, it would be more interesting to try the Nautilus model, which from the point of view of design is much more attractive, but the only one Korean store where I found an attractive color completely ignored me. That is, when you are refused, it is of course an unpleasant thing but sometimes understand, but when you are completely ignored, it is much more unpleasant, especially since I asked to purchase for the full price, I was only interested in the possibility of delivery with any variants. So a few days before my latest purchase – Pilot Custom 845 , I happened to see this model for sale and decided to take a chance.

Narwhal Schuylkill 365 Limited Edition Ebonite (made in USA?)

This pen has a straight cylindrical shape with an almost flat tops and made of red-purple woodgrain ebonite. Some sources say that it is red or dark red ebonite, but it is actually red-purple. The body and cap are fully turning on a lathe, not injection molding. Filling system is real piston-filler. Cap on thread, 2 starts thread, opening/closing in 1 and 1/3 turns.

Yes, thanks, I like the vintage much more too. I know that the name has changed now, but the official website has remained the same and this model has not changed its name because it is limited and is no longer produced. So I allowed myself to keep the name Narwhal))

Hi! Early some markets did not accept 14K gold as jewelry gold, notably France, so the Montblanc produced 18K nibs for those markets. This model is just one of those. And although I already have several reviews on this model, I decided to make a personal post. I had planned to finish the review on Tuesday, but another missile attack by the Russians plunged us into darkness for 30 hours and left us without heat and water, so I’m only finishing the review now.

Montblanc Meisterstück 146 French edition (made in Germany) from 1990

This tool has the same shape known to us as “cigar-like” shape named Streamlined at the time of its release. The body is made of black plastic, which traditionally glows red on backlight. There is an ink window on the body for monitoring with gray tone. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, full closure in 1 turn. The base of the piston collar made from metal (brass), but internal parts are plastic, including the rod.

Hello everyone! I haven’t done reviews for a long time, I even miss them a little, but today will be a very short review, because I already have quite a few reviews of this model, it’s just that it has small differences and is made for the French market.

Montblanc Meisterstück 146 French edition (made in Germany) from 1994

This tool has the same shape known to us as “cigar-like” shape named Streamlined at the time of its release. The body is made of black precious resin, which traditionally glows red on backlight. There is a striped ink window on the body like in modern LeGrand models. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, full closure in 1 turn. The sleeve of the piston mechanism is made entirely of metal (brass), unlike the previous 146.

If you consider the Montblanc 149 an oversize large pen, I can tell you that you simply have not seen large pens)). Today is a review of really oversized pen.

Lotus Maharadja in Nikko Red (made in India) product code 35

Earlier, in describing pens, we could find a comparison shape with the shape of a cigar, so the shape of this pen is a real cigar also by size. The material of tool is red Nikko Japanese ebonite. Filling system is cartridge-converter, international format. Cap on thread, one-start thread, for open\closing used 1 and 3/4 turns.

Hello community! Couldn’t resist against my second color scheme favorite after Aka-Tamenuri, so today is another Urushi beauty in bright red (Aka). I don’t know how it happens, when it seems that the color is simple, and the surface is just glossy, like plastic or resin, but in your own hands and by own eyes, the pen looks so attractive that just can’t stop yourself from buying.

Wancher DreamPen True Urushi Red w|18K JoWo nib B size (?) true craftsmanship

By shape, it is the same form as the previous Dream Pen Aka-Tamenuri – is a real cigar made from black ebonite and covered by Red Urushi (Aka – 赤) lacquer (by the way, this cover is more attractive than on Pilot 845 Vermillion). The filling system is cartridge-converter by international format. Cap on thread, close/open in 1 turn. The design of the cap is clipless and have inside a second spring-loaded cap to seal the nib.

When a few years ago these pens released on Cultpens as Nautilus Rosewood design, I really wanted to buy them, but I was disturbed by the pink sheen, which I didn’t really like, but the pens still sold out very quickly. For some time I was sad that I didn’t dare to buy it when I can, because I didn’t like the later shades Pelagia which appeared after. Last year, I accidentally saw an ebonite model with a wood texture and immediately realized that this is exactly what I was waiting for. Unfortunately, the experience of communicating and buying from the seller who presented these pens was not pleasant, but I really wanted to try this pen after Schuylkill, so I passed all the ways, and now I am ready to share it to you.

Narwhal Nautilus Cumberland Limited Edition for Korea (made in China) 03050141

The shape of this pen is straight, cigar-like with rounded ends, the size is quite large like Montblanc 149 or Pelikan M1000. The body material is ebonite with a Woodgrain texture named company by the Cumberland. The filling system is real piston-filler. Cap on thread with two threads, close/open in 2 turns. This model is limited to 58 pieces, but not numbered for each pen.

Hello everybody! I do not consider myself a collector, but even I have pens that I do not use, but consider it necessary to have them. Mostly from these pens I need to service or customize other people’s pens, but there are also iconic pens. This model is just like that. I don’t remember how long I’ve had it, probably about 4-5 years and I kept trying to do review, but every time I put it off for some reason. But now her time has come and there was a reason for that))

rOtring 600 Gold (made in Germany) R502 681

The shape of this pen is quite difficult to describe, but in general it is a hexagonal in profile and almost repeats the well-known mechanical pencil, which was desired by many engineers and architects. In the first catalog, I found a reference to the fact that the body is made of solid brass chrome finished in matte silver (also was a second model with matte to black). The filling system is a cartridge-converter of the international format. The cap on friction.

In the previous review, I wrote that there were reasons to write a review on rOtring 600 now – so here is this reason. Last year I bought this rOtring 600 Black to my Silver, and it turned out to be a Newton – so, even experienced fans of fountain pens can make mistakes)). At first, I was a little sad, but then, on the contrary, I was happy, because this is a good addition to my fountain pens knowledge base. By the way, there was another reason, which will be described a little later))

rOtring Newton (made in Germany) R502 952 / R502 956

The shape of this pen is almost the same as the previously described rOtring 600, as difficult to describe and in general it is a hexagonal in profile and also repeats the well-known mechanical pencil. The body is made of brass and covered by matte blackening (there is another model with a chrome coating). The filling system is a cartridge-converter of the international format. Cap on friction with click at the end.

Hi! With this model, I probably close all my interested questions by Pilot brand. Yes, of course, there are still 912 and 92 Heritage, or Yukari with Emperor, but they will feel similar to what I have already tried. So let’s not waste time and let’s take a closer look.

Pilot Justus 95 Net Black w|adjustable M nib (made in Japan) FJ-3MRR-NB-M-NT

The shape of this pen is cylindrical, almost straight, with flat ends. The material of the body is black resin, which has a red light when backlighted. The body and cap surface have guilloche texture called “Net”. The filling system is a cartridge-converter of proprietary Pilot format. Cap on thread, 3-starts thread, open/close for 1 and 1/6 turns.

Greetings everybody! Today in review is a fountain pen with interesting material of one well-known brand for another well-known brand)). This material is mixing a natural resin with celluloid and named manufacturer as Magma.

Giorgio Fedon 1919 Magma w|14K nib (made in Italy)

This pen is based on Visconti “Square and Circle” line, which is a cross-section of a square with circled corners, identical to models which I showed in review Visconti Opera Black Guilloche and Opera Club Orange. The body material, as I wrote in the abstract, is a combination of natural black resin and yellow celluloid called Magma. The filling system is a cartridge-converter, international standard and section has an internal thread for screw-in branded converters. Cap on thread, 4-start thread, 2 and 1/4 turns need for closing/opening.

Hello everybody!
My hoster asked me to free the space by 02/27, so if I don't find a new place for my site, my resource will be unavailable for a while. If anyone wanted to read about something, now is the time to do it. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's not up to me. Thank you for attention.

Thanks friends! I found a new host, so there will be no break. The site will work.

Previously, in those days when China had not yet cloned pens in crazy quantities, well-known companies themselves produced inexpensive fountain pens, classifying them as school pens. This is just such a pen from before 2000.

Waterman Reflex Burgundy (made in France) 1995-2000

The model is a cylindrical shape tapering to the end with a rounded end, and the cap when a cylinder shape that smoothly transitions into a hexagon top. The section and caps top are made of black plastic, and the rest is made of burgundy plastic. The filling system is a cartridge-converter, of international format. Cap on friction with click at the end.
