As the second semester of my French classes at Cuyahoga Community College comes to a close, I prepared a web page for my classmates listing resources that have helped me during my studies.

Bob, reading works by English speaking expats, seems counterproductive, to speak French :)
Personally what helped become fluent was immersing myself. Radio and TV helped to a point but the best help was French people who did not hesitate correcting my French. ;) :D

Best thing I ever did (and can imagine doing) in this regard is Alliance Francaise. There are chapters all over the U.S. I attended the one in Washington, DC. In addition to language instruction, we did cultural things like wine tastings at the French Embassy. My instructor always made it a total immersion thing so no way to duck. Hell, she would call me at home, and I'd have to speak with her in French!

Although Switzerland is a quadrilingual country, not all Swiss people actually speak four languages...

When I was suddenly and unexpectedly given a project in the French-speaking part of the country at work 6 years ago, I had to brush up my school French in a very short time. Besides conversation classes and reading French literature, one of the first things I did was to join and actively contribute to the French-language forum www.stylo-plume.org.
It is a small but nice forum with very nice members, and I was immediately and warmly welcomed by them.

Thanks Yazeh. I divided the page by resources for beginners, French language books, and English-language books about Parisian culture. Ms. Poirier's books about Notre Dame and the Left Bank gave me some insights into my hangouts in Paris.

Tri-C had a summer immersion program in Quebec City, and i hope to participate in it once it starts again - and I arrange to have someone up there look after the dog during my absences. Couple of years down the road.

In the meantime, I need to get back to France and hang around with French people.

Merci! I'm a French major so I love this. I've never been to a French speaking area. Until that day comes, I've been learning by watching French vlogs on Youtube. Cyprien and NormanFaitDesVidéos were my first two favorites. Just short comedic sketches (their older stuff especially.) Once I got through that first learning curve, my French improved so much! (Now I'm in the middle of another curve LOL.)

Teaching middle/high school school French is my intention once graduated.
