Howdy, I recently purchased a Wancher "Revive Japanese Vintage Fountain Pen" from another forum.

In a nutshell, it was a program that took old vintage pens and "revived" or restored them. The pen in question is a tiny ebonite eyedropper with a shutoff valve. My question revolves around the nib...which I am guessing is a replacement.

The only imprint visible on it says "special pen" and below that is a "1" indicating the size. It was advertised to me as being 14kt. but the pictures were not clear enough for me to tell. The tipping material is gold which leads me to believe the nib might be plated. I have a few old Japanese eyedroppers and the ones with gold nibs have imprints stating 14kt and or the JIS logo which probably means nothing to a more modern replacement nib.

I don't have a magnet available to check and I don't want to knock it out for further inspection.

Does anyone have any input here? My knowledge of these things are lacking.

Could even be 18k, but by the appearance, I doubt it.

Hi James,

You may have magnets around that could be used to check. The door seal on your refrigerator probably has a magnet inside. Does anyone in your house have a bag or wallet that has a magnetic clasp? You might have a paper clip dispenser with magnets?

Looking at the photos, it's likely not a 14k nib if it's not hallmarked. If you paid for a pen with a 14k nib, you might want to confirm the material. We can only guess from the photos. But there is nothing to suggest that it is in fact 14k.
