This is a page done to catalogue some of the many dip nibs in my collection. Notice my consistent misspelling of Leonardt.

Cyril...awesome, that is so the way to get good. Page after page after page after page....also, it's a next level move switching to oblique holders 👍🏻

66049Speaking of superpowers.....we've all seen ...two nibs $7.00. box of 5 $15. 1 nib $ 6.00. etc etc....
Then ,one day, along comes this ...$AU 43.00 on my desk for the whole lot. !!!!!
What's a bloke supposed to do. Needless to say, I've stopped looking for dipper nibs 🤣

Well done, Rob! It didn't take you long to get a workable quill and then refine it to a good writing tool. I've had a couple of tries at making one and the second one would write, at least, but it wasn't very good. I used a small pocket knife at first then I used a scalpel. I think a large part of my problem is the arthritis in my hands and I no longer have the hand strength to cut the feather as I want. Congratulations on what you have achieved.

Don't blame your technique, Rob. Blame the goose.

@rob excellent job. I read/saw somewhere that for writing with quills one needs to write on tilted desk....when practicing with a pre-cut quill, it worked quite well. But the amount of ink it put on paper was astounding. I had to put the paper under the fan for it to dry ;)

@yazeh, indeed, I noticed straight away that I had to keep the quill much more upright than I’m used to writing, so that would be easier with the surface sloped up to a degree 👍🏻

Yep, I used a slanted board to practice. Nevwrtjeless, I am impressed by those who produced those magnificent illumination manuscripts. Though, admittingly they weren't distracted by smartphones and quill forums [emoji23]
