Hi all,

First, i have to say i've searched the forum before posting this thread.

So, i love pelikans, let get this out of our way. But i also dreamt of owning a Mont Blanc ever since i saw one.

As i mainly USE my pens and don't collect them empty in cabinets, i really need one that can be use as a daily carry. I'm sure that one day i'll own a 149 as a desk pen, like the M1000 in front of me, but until then i wish to know (because, lets be honest, the numbering system on the Mont Blanc is 'different') which size Mont Blanc is the size of a Pelikan M400?

Regards,
Ilan

Hi Ilan,
that will be a 144. Nice little pen. Vera

Thanx Vera

And they don't make them anymore so you'll have to try vintage but be careful as the 144 is one of the most commonly counterfeit of all the Mont Blanc pens.

Cheers,

The piston filler 144 isn't. Just avoid like hte plague the cheap cart/converter version which gets counterfeit. The older version is way nicer anyway!

Disagree slightly. The modern cart/converter pen is very very nice and the fact that it can do cartridges or converter make it very convenient for travel. Perfect daily carry pen as long as it's genuine. I'd take C/C over piston any day of the week. Also you don't need special tool to fix or regrease a converter. :-) if only they made the 149 c/c....

There are several Montblancs that are Pelikan 200/400/old 600 size; the X4 or xx4 pens. Among my favorites are the234½ pens but there are also the 144, 244, 344, 254 and 264 and in the slim flat end 60-70s look the 14, 24, 34, 121, 220, 221 and 321. All are fairly common, the 3XX and 3x pens generally the least expensive and the 14, 121 and 144 being the more expensive.

Here are a few"

234½ and a "Luxury" 234½, 144, early M-400.

There is also the MB 142, a 149 style pen that is easily found for the price of a vintage 400. Look out for e-bay auctions.

But the 142 and other xx2 Montblancs are considerably smaller than the M400.

Then there is the Monterosa 042G.

Also you don't need special tool to fix or regrease a converter.

So how do you fix or regrease a converter?

Just buy a new one?

Absolutely. Most will unscrew and disassemble easily or for a few dollars you can throw in a new one. Job done. I think I paid Montblanc $80 to lube my 146. There's a guy who sells a custom made piston removal wrench for $100 on FPN. With the vintage piston fillers you have to worry about deteriorated cork and so on. Booooooo!! C/C was the best innovation to happen to fountain pens.

To each his own, a properly repaired piston filler will last decades without repair and is just plain elegant!

Capped, they look to be the same size. Maybe the difference comes when you uncap the pen?
