I just received my second Safari. I have one that I love with a fine nib but I am getting some inks that I wanted a broad nib for. I ordered a new white Safari on Amazon with a broad nib but it is like writing with a razor blade when I stroke to the left. To the righ, up and down aren't as bad but still not smooth. Is this normal? Will it get better with time? Should I try to get my money back? Should I just buy another broad nib and try it first? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I tried it with some Noodler's Apache Sunset and It pools the darker parts of the ink in small dots through the stroke as it lays the lighter shades down fine. Is this also a nib issue or could that be the ink?

Thanks in advance!

It sounds to me like your right nib tine is lower than your left.

I don't suggest that you try to fix that yourself if you are not comfortable doing it, but it should be very easy to at least check.

There are several guides and videos out there. I think this one has the information http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRvKrrZdXLs

Edit: I should not have given that answer until I got the Alabama/Auburn answer. My response might change.
Edit 2: I just saw your answer. I suggest that you stomp on it until it writes properly. (Not really)

I think I may just return it. If it was used or I had it longer and felt that returning it was not a viable option I would probably try those techniques but as a novice I would hate to mess it up further and then try to return an even worse nib that may not even be accepted. Thanks for the videos though. I'll keep them in mind for future issues. I was just wondering if there was a break in period and it would have smoothed out on its own and I was just being impatient or something. Thanks for helping.

It should write smooth out of the box, but Amazon is pretty good with returns.

Back in the old days I did get one lemon of a scratchy Safari and it turned me off the breed for some time.

i read such positive reviews of the pens here and there that I tried again. All my new Safaris have come from various soources, and they're fine.

I have several Lamy's and I got my first scratchy nib on the Lamy Logo I bought a few months back with a 1.1 mm nib. A quick look under my loupe and I saw that the tines were not aligned. One quick press on the tine and everything was fine.

The 1.1 nib seems to be the one Lamy nib that has the most inconsistencies. Tweaking the alignment is simple...just be gentle and if it still isn't satisfactory, then send it back!
