View Full Version : Best Notebook To Carry With My Bible

I am looking for a notebook to carry with my bible. It is a Cambridge Clarion ESV (http://www.bibles-direct.co.uk/products/view.php?id=239&c=76) and is slightly larger than 7 1/16" x 5 1/8" inches (180 x 131mm) which is the page size. Ideally I'd like something that is slightly smaller in length and width that the bible but not as small as Moleskine pocketsize.

I have carried Molekines (Large & Pocket) for years with my old bible but two things are pushing me to find something new. One, I am getting into fountain pens a bit more and I would like a better paper with less show/bleed through. Two, the moleskine size is awkward with this particular bible.

Finally, I have the black goatskin version and if there happens to be anything out there with a leather cover that might match that would be perfect.

Any Suggestions?

Clairefontaine, Rhodia, and some other makes of papers take ink better than the Moles, so I've heard. They do offer notebooks in similar sizes. Browse Goulet Pens and Jetpens, which also have reviews. You might get good ideas. I'm looking over some brands thwt are new to me.

What about a case, or binder, or folio or whatever, for holding Bible, notebook, and pens? I used to have one of those....

I have looked for a decent carry case for my bible and a notebook but there aren't many out there of quality. Also, as this bible was an investment I don't want to put it in anything that might damage it or the binding. That being said, I still look for those on Amazon from time to time. I have looked at many different notebooks and there is one that I liked size wise that was one of those you mentioned I believe but it was a planner or something. I'll try to go back and take another look.

Thanks!

Ok, yeah...my carry case was cheaply made, but it did hold a lot.

It would be nice if some vendors had paper samples like they do ink samples.

Levenger's? Jetpens especially has a lot of cases to browse. I'm sure other people will know some web sites for cases that I'm forgetting.

That is a bit of an odd size.

Clairefontaine has clothbound (http://www.gouletpens.com/Small_Lined_Clairefontaine_Clothbound_Notebook_p/c9606.htm) and staplebound (http://www.gouletpens.com/Small_Lined_Clairefontaine_Staplebound_Notebook_p/c3606.htm) notebooks that are 4.25 x 6.75. Apica CD-10 notebooks (http://www.gouletpens.com/Apica_CD_Series_Notebooks_s/1426.htm) are 4.1 x 5.8. The Apica Premium Series (http://www.gouletpens.com/Apica_Premium_Series_Notebooks_s/1427.htm) come in an A6 size. Small Quo Vadis Habanas (http://www.gouletpens.com/Quo_Vadis_s/59.htm) are 4 x 6.375.

JetPens has some very nice Japanese notebooks, such as the Maruman Mnemosyne (http://www.jetpens.com/Maruman-Mnemosyne-Today-s-Act-Note-Pad-A6-4.1-X-5.8-Special-Rule-Perforations-80-Sheets/pd/4787).

If you want something more upscale, the Design.Y leatherbound journals (http://design-y.near-mint.com/product.html) with Tomoe River paper are heirloom quality and come in black goatskin. The 336 size looks about right.

The arc or circa system notebooks, the first from Staples and the second from Levenger are both very fountain pen friendly and you can add or remove pages as necessary.

My last notebook was a Rhodia Webnotebook. Right now I am using a Quo Vadis Habana.

I presume you looked at the journals on the Bibles Direct site you linked to ?

This is a bit bigger than the pocket Moleskine, but maybe not quite big enough? The larger journal is the same width but slightly taller than your Bible. They would surely make a lovely pairing, though.

I would love to get one of those but the last line of the description is "lightweight paper" and that scares me for the price.

Love it but $110+ is more than I can go for. I'm bookmarking it though. It's black goatskin and looks like it would be perfect. Thanks!

I am not sure how much it would cost but locating a local bookbinder and giving them some Tomoe River paper to make a journal/notebook for you seems really cool. Gerald Taylor did this: http://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/3673-Custom-Tomoe-River-leather-notebooks

I second Ivan's suggestion of contacting your local bookbinder. But for those who don't want to source loose paper and BYO bookbiner, or want to order it all in one place, or simply want factory ruled TR paper notebook...

Both books are bound with goatskin leather; My breviary with Moroccan, and the Design.Y 288 with veg tanned goatskin sourced from Pakistan. There are small differences, but both are equally good. Normally the 288 only comes in Italian leather, but you can make a special request before ordering and it will be ready in two weeks time. All orders are custom job.

Close up shot of the leather grains, but pardon the image quality, it wasn't easy taking photos of black leather on a rainy day :)

Comprehensive review with a wide variety of inks here: http://www.biffybeans.com/2010/08/review-allans-journal-from-bibles.html

I'm tempted to get one myself: it looks as though it behaves better than Moleskine with which I get terrible bleed through with wet writers.

I've had a lot of joy with the Midori notebook range. The paper is excellent for fountain pen and highly resistant to feathering and bleedthrough.
