It has been written extensively about, Putin is a disciple of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Ilyin which explains his actions, that nothing is ever Russia's fault, and why he wants to destroy the West and be the "savior" of the world.

I teach Conrad's novel. I have trouble seeing a parallel. Perhaps you might share your thinking. Kurtz's story seems much more about the seduction of moral-less power out in the wilderness where he has made slaves of locals and hoarded ivory for money. Putin is urbane and stays far from the dirt and "horror" of war. Interestingly, in HOD, the European boat occasionally shells the jungle coast to intimidate the residents, but the jungle merely absorbs the harmless projectiles and no damage is shown. The jungle is impervious. Not so, the cities and villages of Ukraine.
