I am in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
Several weeks ago, I received delivery from Madrid, Spain a brand new 2019 Montblanc 149 Calligraphy pen. Right away, I gave the pen a cursory inspection and put it away till the hubbub of the Memorial Day activities passed. This morning I finally gave it a thorough going over that I normally do for starting any new pen...inspect, hold, feel balance, post it, look for defects, dry write, lightly shake for loose parts, ink up with just water and stopped short of dipping it in my favorite Pelikan Edelstein bottle.

Here's my question: when I screw the cap on the barrel and tightening it without exceeding it into the overtight range, the cap still wiggles back and front and right and left. I just compared it with my 1980's Montblanc 146, its older baby brother, and it too does the same wiggle thing.
Should I be concerned? I used a 10X loupe to examine the cap and cap lining and see no cracks nor does the threads look damaged. I am very satisfied otherwise with my new acquisition and it is just plain wonderful. There is a local Montblanc Boutique less than 10 minutes drive if I need to bring it there for inspection.

might be worth a visit to see if their current stock wiggles similarly.

I thought that a visit might be the thing to do too. The local Montblanc Boutique has none of the Calligraphy in stock at the moment though.
Just now took out my 1925 Parker Duofold Flat Top Senior pen and 1941 Esterbrook Bandless Dollar Pen. Both of the caps screw into the barrel securely and they are rock solid tight with no wobbles.

I've heard before of slightly wobbly caps on the 146 sized Meisterstück. In fact I think I once had one. Montblanc will say it's normal.

I have a year-old 146 with a wobbly cap(and yes was told it's normal) but my 146C is not wobbly.

It seems the nature of the beast these days, unfortunately, and considering that Montblanc has known how to make screw caps for better than 80 years now(and has been making them out of resin for over 50 years) it seems strange that this problem would now pop up.

Such is the state of things, though.

Blame it on Covid.

I believe that the recent pens made after 2013 have this problem. I have a 90th Anniversary 149 that has this problem. I am not being picky here, because I have 3 other pens (one from late 60´s-early 70´s and the other two from the 1985-2013 period) and none is like this. I took my 90th Anniversary to an AD (was already out of warranty) and the person was very helpful. She suggested that we tried every 146 and 149 pen in the shop and all of them had this same characteristic. She even said that they could send my pen to Montblanc, but believed that it would be useless, as all pens had this wobbly cap. I also have a 149 Calligraphy and although the pen is slightly firmer, it isn´t on par with the pens of the past. Curiously, the caps from 1985-2013 and the post-2013 era are not interchangeable. I tried it and they don´t fit. Strangely, the late 60´s and the 1985-2013 are.

The wobbly caps are a common problem on the Meisterstück lineup, I think the metal thread pens do not have this issue but the resin ones do.

What would be the cause of this? Worn threading machinery?

I know this is an old question. But good news. Pretty much ALL montblanc 149s wiggle a nit when capped. No worries. I have some 50 of them...all do.

I must have defective 149s. Neither my 90's nor current model Platinum wobble

The cap of my 1980s 149 wobbles, slightly, but wobbles. Never bothered me and after reading this post I checked it. Who cares :-)
