I'm selling one of my 149s. This pen is in great condition aside from two things: the piston stem is broken and there is an engraving on the cap.

Brand: Montblanc Meisterstuck
Model: 149
Type: Fountain Pen
Nib: 14k Extra Fine
Feed: Split Ebonite
Condition: Broken piston stem and cap engraving “C Edward Hayes III”
Serial Number: EB108260
Approximate year of production: 1985-1990
Includes: Pen only. No box or papers

The nib is in great condition and writes very well when dipped. It does not need to be adjusted. The barrel of the pen has scratches from normal use.

The easiest options to have it fixed:
1.) Send it in the Montblanc to have it serviced. In the past they have charged me a flat $80 fee. That usually includes a new cap which would eliminate the engraving as well. I have not had it sent in so I cannot confirm this, but search around on the forums for confirmation on this price.

2.) Find a new piston stem- I’ve seen them on ebay for as cheap as $30.

I'm tempted to send it in and have it repaired myself, but I own four working 149s already.

Asking: $250 shipped within the U.S. You're welcome to make me an offer. I'm pretty firm on the price for now, but I'll adjust it depending on interest.

Hello,

I've found this old for sale thread while searching for similar experience.

You mention that such missing rod may be replaced easily. I happen to have the same era pen with the same problem. I've just ordered a replacement rod.
Do you know how to actually replace the rod in the cap?

Thanks in advance and sorry for any inconvenience,

Serge

Hi

The rod is held in the cap by a spring clip and its neither easy to remove or replace although it is easier to replace than remove. The trick is getting the clip out without breaking the cap. I have seen it done by drilling a hole in the end of the cap and then pushing the broken rod out, then after reassembly the hole is filled in.

Await the views of the more knowledgeable members before you proceed and damage the cap too far.

In the case of the pen for sale would it not have been better to get it repaired and then sell it working. Montblanc would repair the piston and if asked replace the cap for their level one service for about $80 and it would add much more than that to the value. Just remember to tell them you don't want the feed changed, which they shouldn't do as they are doing nothing to the nib.

Thank you! I will try to figure out the rod removal without any drilling though.

Didn't MB start putting serial numbers on pens about 1992?

I know on mine which is from around 1990 does not have a serial number so 1992 is probably close to when they started.
