Is there any industry standardization of lead hardness? Is there a device or technique to measure where on the HB scale a lead falls?
Can a 2B not be a 2B (sorry Shakespeare)?

My experience is that 2B (or other grades) is not always the same hardness. Not even with the same manufacturer. Not even with the same pencil type of the same manufacturer (!).

Therefore your Shakespeare analogy "2B or not 2B" seems to be true as far as pencil leads go. LOL

Maybe that's why Shakespeare didn't use pencils.
