I was in Hobby Lobby today, and although they don't specifically carry notebooks like Rhodia or Moleskine (or Target equivalents, etc...); they do carry sketchbooks. For Pencil, Chalk, Graphite, Crayon, Ink & Light Watercolor.

Ink?

That changes things. They have lots of sketchbooks with 80+ pages of slightly varying paper in different covers and sizes. I got an 80 page 4x6" pocket size book with elastic closure and elastic loop built in. 40% off, apparently every other week. $5.99 is now $3.50?

I grabbed a few different sizes and types. This one is 4.75x6.5", one of those leather-ish wrapped jobbies. Definitely not $3.50, this MSRP at 24.99. But at the discount I think it's definitely worth $15.

80 sheets of 'handmade paper' from India. Weight isn't specified, but it's noted as 'acid-free'. It's thick, but flexible, and seems bound well (for those that know more than me about such things).

I like the paper. It's not white but it's not cream either. Color seems to pop well off the page, even though well absorbed.

PPS, BTW.

It looks like a linen or something up close. You can definitely tell you're not writing on Rhodia or Tomoe River. The feedback - particularly with a stub gliding over it - is pleasant.

No feathering.

Whenever I've visited Florida Hobby Lobby has been a "must visit" store on my list. I can easily spend most of a morning in there and always return home with something from Hobby Lobby in my suitcase. We ensure we get the concierge to print out the current offer sheet before we leave the hotel. Love it. :)

Are we going to see some sketches in your sketchbook? :)

Nice find. Any paper made in India is worth a shot.

Part two.

These I think are a great buy. $3.50 for the little ones and $5.50 for the big? (sale priced).

4x6 for the small one, 5.5x8x5 large.
80 sheets of 80lb (130gsm) paper.
Nicely bound

I cut a page out of the small book. Here's some doodling with pens on the desk.

I assume no bleed through nor ghosting?

Not even with that flexy Omas and Ancient Copper. It's 80lb art paper.

Turns out you can order these, or some similar ones from the Master's Touch series, online: https://www.hobbylobby.com/Art-Supplies/Painting-Canvas-Art-Surfaces/Art-Journals/Masters-Touch-Sketchbooks---3-Piece-Set/p/81107236
(Although one of them looks as if the paper may be pretty dark.)

I disagree with you, the best paper is made in Japan and Finland.

Finland? What brands source their paper in Suomi? ;)

That's nice. Note that I didn't say 'best.'

In my experience, paper from Japan is great, paper from India is very often very nice, and from other places it... varies. I even like some from China.

There are many brands that source their paper in Suomi, including UPM, Stora Enso, Metsä, Myllykoski, and Finesse. This is according to my data.))
