Picked up ten converters for $3.25 w/ free international shipping
My first Jinhao came with one of these and it's actually working really well and I THINK/hope that these converters is international standard size so they will fit some other pens I have. If not, I have a lot of spare converters for Jinhaos :)

The $3.25 w/ free shipping (so 32 cents/per converter) seems to be about the norm.
Here's some options;

Five for $1.85 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/5pcs-Jinhao-Fountain-Pen-Ink-Converters-Ink/131262329738?_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D20131230161411%26meid%3D07f26814f96d458ea45 9305b6c2c45ae%26pid%3D100012%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D10%2 6sd%3D222110855803)
Ten for $3.32 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/10pcs-Jinhao-Black-Fountain-Pen-Ink-Converters/191160873003?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3D5ad3338f6d724c9e963 bd8ff4f0eff5d%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D10%2 6sd%3D222110855803)

I've just ordered another load of Chinese pens to replace my Parker Reflex pens. Although the Reflex writes reasonably well if the ink isn't too gunky, it does feel a bit on the cheap side (ok, I paid 99p) and plasticky compared with the metal Jinhaos.

I'm waiting for a Wearever combo and three nibs for the Hero 359.

From my reading it seems the Hero has nibs which can exchange with the Lamy, and the Jinhao has a cap which can, but that neither of the two is completely interchangeable. I had a Lamy body and feed, but no cap or nib. A Jinhao to provide the cap came yesterday, and I am waiting on the nibs, which can be purchased on Ebay separately from the Hero pen itself. I don't have a Lamy cart - they are easy enough to get but I am tired of waiting - does anyone know if a Parker can be used in a pinch? Might as well get as many names in on the act as possible.

I do realize this is all an awful lot like sitting in a puddle making mud pies. That's a major reason to do it. You can't make mudpies wrong...

I am still waiting for my Wearever combo and my Hero nibs. I can see from tracking that the Wearever is in town but that they are sending it around to all the wrong post offices. The nibs are sitting the sorting center in town. It took them 7 days to get there from China, and they have been there four days now - wanna bet they spend more time getting to me once they got here than they took to get here to begin with?

I find this hilarious.

I am also waiting for a Romus demonstrator.

Bizarre day. Received two packages from the UK - was expecting a textbook and a workbook for Chinese language class. Actually got CD audios for both... and they are in Chinese! What possible use is a Chinese language teaching aid in Chinese to a beginner who speaks none? Anyway, a quick perusal of the order reveals that in my enthusiasm I hadn't checked the format. So, back they will go for a refund (the Book Depo is good like that) and a second order will be placed for the actual textbooks. Sheesh!

Two hours later and I find an EMS package on my desk.

It's the Custom 823! :dance3: Only arrived 6 days BEFORE the earliest projected delivery day!

Now, do I open it now, or should I do a photographic unboxing when I get home?

Looks as though you're getting a reasonable amount of line variation, would you recommend the broad 21k for someone who is looking for something equivalent to a Western medium or medium fine?

Great photo and choice of pen, by the way!

Thank you!
I would actually recommend this for those who are looking for a Western Medium. To me it's bordering Western Broad, but as you observed, this nib is capable of quite significant line-variation, which surprised me because it's marked H-B.

NOTE: The line-variation from this nib is what I call the "good" kind. Instead of just dumping more ink on the paper ( the "bad" kind), this nib lays down ink evenly, which with the right ink, will result in beautiful shading.

My thought on this one is to turn it into a Broad Italic, now that would make this amazing nib into Awesomeness...

Did you specifically order the H-B?
I'm thinking I'd probably want to try the normal, or perhaps soft even, given the choice - especially seeing how well yours performs.

The previous owner did. I bought the pen *because* it has a broad nib.

I was expecting a typical modern pen nib (ultra smooth, but hard as nails). So I was pleasantly surprised to find the springiness.
Mind you this pen will not stand a chance against my Lucky Curve or Ingersoll or Biltwel nibs in a flex contest, but there is enough line-variation to make me happy (without gorilla-pressure needed on some of modern "flex").

I didn't know there is "normal", I thought it's either H- or S- choices.

I almost bought a Lamy Joy calligraphy set as an upgrade to my Parker Vector set which has served me well for almost ten years, but then realised for less than 50% more I could buy three whole Lamy pens from thewritingdesk.co.uk, one with each of the three different italic nibs, and have three pens inked ready to go rather than just one.

Waterman's 52 1/2 V Fountain Pen in Red Ripple Rubber 14KT Gold Flex Nib

I decided to splurge and get a pen model I've seen many times but never could justify buying in terms of the cost. Compared with some of the prices I've seen on comparable specimens, this seemed to be a good buy - good that is if the pen turns out to be as advertised by the seller. He seems to be reliable. He goes to the trouble and effort to include in his eBay description a grading system he devised to try and cover all of the pen's aspects. That was impressive.

I wanted a vintage pen because they are small enough for me to write with. (For whatever reason, modern pens have become much larger, especially at the grip).

But there is also that cachet that comes from old things that have been properly cared for, and this pen is certainly OLD! It was made in 1926.

In addition these old nibs have some degree of flex and yet can be written with normally, and often the line width produced is a true fine.

And then of course there is that red ripple design. It was so popular that modern, contemporary pen makers have adopted it, incl. Noodler.

And it is a lever filler which I think of as the most simple, reliable filling type amongst the others utilized by the old pen makers back in the day.

Have a look!

I've decided not to buy any new pens for now, "for now" being, of course a non-specific amount of time. I'm still catching up on some vintage pen repairs which I want to do myself; I've gotten half a dozen of the easier ones out of the way so far this year.

But I'm waiting (and will be for some time) to get my British Mabie Todd Swann 3150 back from John Mottishaw. Shouldn't be long now; I was told February of 2017. :lazy2: The nib has some promising flex, but is also worn or deliberately ground as a right oblique, which is not a good thing for me. As a right-hander, I've occasionally used left obliques comfortably, but prefer symmetrical nibs, and that's what he's doing for me.

If that works out, I may have another job for him, a flex mod on the less favored of my two Pilot Custom Heritage 92s. But I can decide that next year, and then wait another six months, if his turnaround time hasn't gone up by then.;) With luck, maybe I can distract myself from new pens.

I started doing a 3 day per week vegetarian menu this summer and generally planning my meals better. When I got to the end of summer with my first paycheck since May coming on September 20, I looked at the money I saved on food. The majority of it will become a Centropen 100820. It's a celluloid pen from Czechoslovakia made in the 1960s, and I'm extremely excited. This isn't my picture. And, this will be the single most expensive pen I've ever purchased. I may cry if it disappoints me.

Okay...there is a ballpoint included. We'll just ignore that, shall we?

Vintage OMAS are just so nice!

All I know so far is that it's a late 1940s 555 model in tortoiseshell celluloid, and is nearly NOS. It seems like it has vest pocket proportions, but I'm not sure how that was denoted in the nomenclature, nor am I sure exactly during what years it was produced. I'd love to hear from vintage OMAS collectors (AltecGreen etc.)!

Update: After reading some translated postings from Italian fora (including this WONDERFUL posting here: https://forum.fountainpen.it/viewtopic.php?t=10669), it seems OMAS dropped the numerical designations in the 1940s, meaning the proper name for it is just an OMAS Extra, vest pocket size.

It is a Skyline clone made by a pen company in Japan (unless they also hired Mr. Dreyfuss to design their pen and somehow bypass all the copyright issues).

I have no idea what metal the cap is made out of, and I don't know if this pen is easier to obtain than a real Skyline with sterling silver cap.

I have a Nakaya in Briar with an italic nib and love the look and feel of it. Hopefully this one will be a nice addition.

Not a big, costly purchase, and pretty much not for me, but to give to others: I happened to log in just as this lot came up - 17 NOS Sheaffer School Pens and 12 carts. Perfect for friends who want to see what fp writing is all about, etc. Less than $2.00 a pen, yay!

Ranga 3 - Ebonite Black/Blue Teal swirl from the FPN group buy. Goulet seems to have the same color in their current seasonal pen from Edison but I like the flat top on the Ranga 3. I'll pop an extra Franklin Christoph nib on that puppy, or get an Edison nib and hopefully I'll be good to go.

Well two 10 cm long rods of Omas celluloid in Burkina showed up. After this gets sent off, I'll have a 6 or 7 month wait before it comes back as a pen!

The Burkina pattern is a wonderful swirling yellow with black dots and streaks through it. I was worried that it wouldn't be enough for a pen but I've been assured that it'll just barely work for a medium-size pen. The pen on the bottom is a Scriptorium in Tibaldi Impero celluloid =]

It's hard to tell what the machined and polished Burkina looks like just by looking at the rods but Dan Smith has wonderful pictures of it on his blog: https://nibsmith.com/2015/06/09/omas-ogiva-burkina-review/

I know there was some bronze arco celluloid going around and I would have loved to get some but I'm happy I managed to get the Burkina, which is my second favorite of the Omas celluloids. I'm thinking it'll be a clipless flat-top with a button roll-stop and a #8-size nib =]

Check eBay diligently! There's been a decent amount of Omas material that pops up now and again and that's how I found mine. I'm sure even more has probably sold through private transactions but I don't have the contacts in the pen community to come across that. A Burkina Pelkian binde would be very cool!

I believe so. There were several rods of Omas celluloid (Arco, Extra Lucens, Burkina, Gray Smoke, Saft Green) on Ebay over the past three months or so -- Ebay is also where I found my rods. I actually didn't think of locating Burkina celluloid until I came across it while browsing Ebay one day. I imagine there is still more out there that will come out onto the market. Though lots of it is probably exchanging hands in privates sales. Keep an eye out and you might find some! =]

Yep, it'll be going to Renee. I'm going to have her make an Aeterna out of it, with a button roll stop, what she calls a 'lota' roll stop.

I can answer that right now :).

I chose Realo to get away from the converter. Sailors converters are cheap and generally smaller than others. I remember going through ink often in the Pro Gear. I also had two different Sailor converters leak ink past the piston and get into the barrel of the pen. No thank you! The Realo should hold a little bit more ink with the piston system, and with the ink window I will always know if there is ink in the pen. The fact that it's visible while capped is even better.

I expect the writing experience to be almost the same. The new pen has a medium-fine nib while the last one was a broad. Visually I chose the II over the classic because I liked the look of the new clip. It took me a moment to realize they had incorporated the anchor logo. I thought it was just a unique design at first. I like it.

Ordered a Delike from China. It is a "copy" of the Sailor Pro Gear. Risky, I know, but for $16, curiosity got the best of me.

Have you seen Delike's other model, a brushed brass Kaweco sport clone. Looks pretty nice. I wonder if the Kaweco nib fits -- might make a nice Franken pen. Lol

I have one on the way already.
Another one.

The brass Kaweco sport looking one.

They show the brass Kaweco looking one with a converter. Would be interested to know if yours comes with the converter and how well it works.

It came with a full size converter. The pen is actually a little bit larger than a Kaweco AL Sport.

That's nice it came with a converter. I carry an Al Sport daily and love the pen, I use cartridges and refill them when I want to use an ink I don't have in cartridges. A little larger wouldn't be a problem but have already spent too much this month on pens so may wait awhile!

It is an extra fine that was really scratchy even though it was aligned. It took about 15 passes on micro mesh film to get it up to my expectations.
