I recently got this vintage 149. There’s no serial number, just “W-GERMANY” around the ring on the cap (which would be accurate for a pen of this age). My experience is with current Montblanc pens, so I’m not 100% sure it’s authentic.

I did the Montblanc “flashlight” test and the color of red that shines through the barrel looks the same as my current LeGrand purchased direct from Montblanc. The guarantee has info on all the various mechanisms, which seems excessive for a forgery.

Is there anything else that I can check?

I think this might be legit, but wanted to check with the experts.

Montblanc began adding serial numbers to their pens in 1990. Before then and before the Berlin wall came down their cap bands were marked W.Germany. As you suggest this is correct for a pen made before 1990. The pen pictured is authentic but the flashlight test is no longer a reliable test. A magnet test on the nib would show up a nib that wasn't made from gold. The fact that this pen has a 14K nib suggests it was probably made for the US market. I would have no concerns with it. Enjoy your Mb 149. :)

Thank you so much! I did the magnet test and the nib is not magnetic. I appreciate your help.

This is a good old Montblanc Pen. The Box , the the leaflets and the micro-scratches gives an idea it has it life very well and still will be living for many many years.
The nib is not flexible I guess. I have one pen from this age in my collection.. This pen need a good CLC and it will be a good daily writer with a flashy one .

I wonder when MB149's sold for $45? 1960's?

I do not think that is a box which originally housed a 149 FP.
It appears to be for a MB 251 which is one of their repeater pencils from the 70's
That would have the pricing make more sense..........

Nice photos of a beautiful 149. That nib appeared on 149s from 1985-90/91. The box is clearly from a different model per its sticker. However, I received a 149 in a similar box in December 1982. It was purchased in Amsterdam at Schipol Airport's Duty-Free Shop a month earlier & brought to me by a friend. Enjoy your great new-old 149.
