My family and I had the opportunity to celebrate New Years Eve and Day with relatives in California, and as part of the sightseeing that we did while there, we saw this incredible water mill that seems to jump straight out of a postcard, in a winery called Mill Creek Winery in Healdsburg, CA. We are not wine buffs, but some of you who are, and didn't know about this place, could be one to put in your list to visit.

So of course I had to photograph it with the intention to sketch it later, and just for fun, here's the photo:

NOTE: That day it was raining hard. But when you get only one chance to take the picture, you have to take it. Make lemonade out of a sour wine (or something to that effect).

And here's my sketch:

I use my 1930s Monogram pen to sketch it with Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo, but that's beside the point of this post.

Anyone want to use the photograph to do a sketch in your own style? It'd be fun to see.

This is a cool idea Will, thank you!

Here comes my contribution. Please excuse the architectural liberties I have taken...

@usk15, I like that you seem to just casually wave your pencil and sketch that. Love it. :)

@christof, now you are just having too much fun with the architecture, LOL! I really like how you render the big wooden wall above the patio.

Who's next?

I'm testing a broken pen. While sketching, I looked at the photo, but not the sketch Penwash did. Paper was a Dollar Tree pad called Array, which is about the size of a post card, lol.

Wonder if the ink is pale because it's pale, or because the nib is loose and came off twice so far.

I knew dear Christof would just 'nail' it! - As usual! Maybe I'll try one tomorrow (it's midnight now).

@Yazeh, it is consistent with your style! I was expecting 3 different fountain pen inks, haha. My favorite part is the cat peeking out of the window :)

@SK, that's the idea, my sketch is not part of the reference, just the photo. And I like your 60 seconds version.

@joolstacho, I think it's not just Christof who "nailed" it. Everyone who contributed has taken a photograph, which, apart from the composition, is an objective representation of the subject, and infuse their own vision (how they see things) into a creation (a subjective interpretation of the subject).

So in a sense, everybody nails it.

Looking forward to see yours :)

I rarely attempt landscapes, but here's mine.

@catbert I can still see your style in any type of sketch.
I was half expecting wolfie chillin' inside,
or piggy jumping off the window into the pond :D

@usk15 Nice, I see that you decided to incorporate some of the trees on the right side of the mill.

I am actually pleasantly surprised that this thread became more than just ... y'know, rolling tumbleweeds :D

To my eye, this doesn't look that much like your work. It's great, like all your work, but different....

This is my daughter's input, not a sketch, but a drawing with coloring pencils and ink highlights:

I'd like to say I was going for different but in fact that one predates the one I posted first. I held it back in favour of something that seemed more 'me'.

Awesome!!!
Please tell her that her drawing is better than a lot of my sketches, plus it is closer to what the photograph depicts. I mean look at how she rendered the shrubs. Love it.

Definitely! She is getting better than me, and I am so proud of that!

Thank you for your kind words! She made a commission last month, for a friend. The more she practice, the better she is getting!

It's time to get her a good sketchbook, Dad :)

And probably she'll like watercolor-pencils too.
