On offer is this solid yew penstand, which will look at its best when holding identical or similar pens. It is finished in French polish with pool table quality baize on the underside.

Specification 5” tall, 4½” wide and 111 grammes in weight. Please check the weight as this is quite light, and we don’t want any dissatisfied customers. On the plus side, the lighter weight does make for cheaper shipping, and this is reflected in the price.

Prices, including shipping, read as follows
U.K. - £17.50

Europe - €22.00
Rest of the World - $32.00

Are you sure this is yew?

The short answer is YES! Although you did give me sufficient doubt to go to the woodshed and check, but I have no more from the same board. Just Google images of yew and it should put your mind at ease.
The penstand is unstained and treated with a clear French polish, which accentuates the grain.
Hope that helps!
Regards,

Leslie

Hmm. Timber is my specialist subject. Whilst yew certainly can show a wide variety of colours, it being a softwood one thing it never exhibits is open grain. At first glance I thought this might be a tropical hardwood; on reflection however it looks more like a nicely coloured piece of European ash.

We do seem to be straying off the subject of pens and penstands somewhat, but, without the discarded pieces of wood it is impossible to say for certain. However, here's one I didn't make earlier, - a length of yew, and the grain on the "S" looks remarkably similar. It's just that the shape of the letter distracts from the shape of the grain. I also have a tealight holder, again, definitely yew, and the end grain looks the same.
If you're not convinced, then let's agree to differ. I'm certainly not trying to deceive, - or pass the buck for that matter! (pun intended)

Nice presentation - but the Hero pens completing the dollar sign - priceless!

I'm not accusing you of anything, it really doesn't matter much does it?

I'll leave it there except to say that I'm now fully convinced that it's ash - heaven knows I've been through enough of it over the last quarter century. That waney edged board is undoubtedly yew, however, as is the upper end grain sample.

Don't judge me! They were the only matching pens that I had.
I bought them for display purposes in a craft marquee, just to make my inkstands look complete, and since I was not present all the time, I wanted expendable pens.
Can't stop, - whittling to get on with!

Was not judging "YOU" - Think about it = Dollar Sign - American. Hero Pen -- Made where?

Just thought that was a priceless combination considering nothing is Made in USA - and most of the products esp from places like Wal Mart are from China.

Then of course the American Visa commercials probably are not shown in the UK - so without a common core of experience the Priceless reference as it appears would not be funny to you.

I will leave it at that

Good day.
