I just picked up a 149 with a B nib and just dipped it to test the pen. I found it extremely fat and juicy, almost a BB nib. I compared it to my 146 OB nib and the OB is finer, and not so wet or juicy. With the 149B, my letters have to be at least 6mm in size, not including the upper portions or lower portions of the letters. Any smaller, the letters become all occluded. There is a bit of feathering, but that might be the juiciness of the nib or the paper itself. I used MBMB for the dip.

I didn't realize the 149B was so wet and juicy. I think I might have gotten a BB.

How about a writing sample?

okay here is what I have so far.

The grid squares are 1/4 inch or 6.35mm

I really think I have a BB when you compare it to the 146 OB. Granted, it's an OB, but the difference is massive.

Hi

I too doubt very much that that 149 is a B, did it still have the gold label on the body with the nib size on it, and was it new or pre-owned as the second hand sellers like to call these things these days.

Mind you I have both the 149 and 146 as well and they are both supposed to be mediums bit in my case the 146 writes with a much broader and wetter line than the 149 does.

This was a pre-owned pen and it did not have any stickers nor did my 146. I'm meeting up with my pen club next week and I'll get some advice from them as well. Will keep you posted.

I don't have a writing sample close at hand, but the nib and writing sample look very much like the 149 BB I had for a while.

Yup, looks like BB at least.

I'm beginning to suspect that myself. I don't really want the hassle of informing the seller and potentially returning it and going through a refund process. The BB is just to wet and juicy for me. I want a daily writer, just like my 146OB.

I might have to put this up for a sale and continue my search for a B. The pics of the nib in the original sale looked inconclusive at best, at worst, a suspected BB. I know that MB B nibs are wider than normal to begin with, so I gave the pics the benefit of the doubt. In hindsight, I should have really paid closer attention to the nib pics.

Can you tell from the original sale pics?????

Here is the link to the pics.

(To top it off my first 149 is a Mottishawed CI, which is too fine for me. :( )

You really cant tell from the sellers pics that it is a BB... I mean it could be a B or BB... or a stubbed Medium...

Either way if its just to much I am sure you could sell it for what you paid adding in the shipping charge to the price very quick.

You don't see a lot of BB 149's around.... It's like looking for a Platinum 146

You will probably get more when you sell it than you paid for it because being a BB is its USP and eBay buys just love a USP, like when they pay double the value for a Parker 51 Custom when all the custom is, is a Gold Cap which loads of them had.

Okay, I got a hold of the seller and he swears it's a B noting the "thousands" of pens he's sold over the years. He advised me to go to the MB boutique and get confirmation of it being a B (versus a second opinion).

I'll keep you updated.

Well, it's difficult to be exact. From your pictures, I'd say it looks like a BB. Sellers pictures don't really give much away.

Boutiques probably have better things to do (in their opinion) than decide whether some guy's pen is a B or BB?
May work out, if they're not busy and have a knowledgeable person at the counter, when you call.

You didn't mention what you paid for it, but I'd imagine (all other factors being constant) that a BB 149 would sell for good money, on well known auction sites or pen forum classifieds.
I know that that's an extra hassle - but it may be easier than dealing with a seller who insists they're right. (And may be right.)

Nice pen, though. Congratulations.
Good luck.

I once used a 149 from the 1970s with a B nib that was extremely wet and extremely wide. Even using MB Midnight Blue made no difference. The line you are getting looks like what I had.

Well, I got a chance to go to the MB boutique and tested out a B, and a BB and compared it to my suspect BB and my OB.

Top writing is the Boutiques BB,
Middle one is my suspect BB
Bottom one is the Boutiques B
Right one is my OB

Staff there are pretty confident it's a BB. I compared nibs side by side with the Boutiques B and a BB and the differences is the same as my OB and my suspect BB

Not sure if I should inform the seller or not as there is pretty much not much of anything that can be done, as I really don't want to have the hassle of returning it, paying for postage, hoping it arrives safely and then waiting for my money, all the while losing transaction fees.

I will slowly learn to love the BB, Kinda like a forced marriage.

I'm pretty confident that you will come to see this not as a forced marriage but rather a fortunate encounter.

It looks like a BB to me. Perhaps someone has a micrometer and can measure it and compare it with a known BB.

Why not have it ground? You could make it into an OB, or an italic, or cursive italic, or a stub. Actually, added flex would be cool ;)
