Some months ago I decided I would make a pen inspired in the old safeties from Montblanc, Kaweco and Waterman.
I wanted to make a big size pen using only Ebonite and that would have a self filling mechanism all made by myself.
I have developed the design of the pen and of the filling mechanism with the valuable inputs and help of Pedro Nabais, a Portuguese pen friend aficionado. I want to make a public note thanking Pedro by all his great ideas and precious help.
This is a quite large pen as you can realize by comparing it to a Montblanc 149 and a Delta Dolve Vita Oversize standing next to it in one of the pictures. I wanted to make a pen that was big as the Famous Montblanc 12 or Waterman 20. Turns out I did not make it as big, but almost!! During production I decided to make it a little smaller so it can be comfortable to use during writing.
The clip is inspire in the Soennecken 111 series clip design but it is a "wrapping around cap" one. It is Sterling silver and was hand made by a jeweler according to the design defined by me and Pedro. Pedro had a huge part in the clip development. I really like he outcome.
The pen takes 3,5ml of in and the filling system is based on the Parker's vacumatic system but I have replaced the sac by orings. 10-15 pumps and the pen fills completely and lasts almost a life time.
The pen was all hand made using my lathe and engraved using a CNC engraving machine.
Cap has a 4 start threads. All joints are threaded for easy disassembling in order to perform any needed maintenance on the filling mechanism, like replacing the o-rings or to clean any traces of the last ink color used.
I have used diagonal knurls in the cap top and barrel end to give some texture and break the straight lines of the pen.
It is fitted with a Bock nib.
In the last pictures you can see the filling mechanism and all the pen parts!!
Measurements:
Total length - 150mm
Cap length - 75mm
Barrel length( with nib) - 132mm
Posted length - 180mm
Cap diameter - 16,5mm
Barrel diameter - 14,5mm
Ink capacity - 3,5ml
Nib - Bock steel nib - shoulder-width of 8.4mm and visible nib length of 23mm for an overall nib length of 35mm
The NR I is a limited edition of 4 pens, each one in a different color:
I - all Black, still to be made
II - Ripple brown - my personal pen
III -Ripple green - Offered to Pedro
IV - Ripple Dark brown/Red (still to be made)
Enough about describing, here are the pictures, hope you enjoy and your comments and critics are welcome!!
I would appreciate if you could help me with a small survey and tell me what design you prefer the most and why:
NR I , NR II or 1949
You can find all three here in this forum. Thank you in advance!!
