An amazing demonstration of painted lettering. Fantastic control of the brush.

Also on the site is an animated gif showing him doing the big flourishes on the final 'G' as a sort of spoiler to the video.

I understand what Manny meant by flicking the upstroke now.

That's quite wonderful, thanks!

Question: At around 3:55, just before he starts the flourish, he says something like: "It's better to do this particular thing without the mulstic (or mull stick?) ..." I'm not sure what he means there--can someone explain?

I think he is referring to the stick (with the cloth knob) he rests his hand on when painting to create a mobile support. A lot of painters & illustrators use them to create a firm rest for their painting hand and keep it off the working surface at the same time. He probably doesn't use it at that point because he requires unhindered freedom of movement when doing those big swirly flourishes.

If you watch it again you will see he has a stick in his left hand and he rests his right palm or wrist on it for support.

Great video!

That was really cool.. nice find

Aaah, I see - thanks for clearing that up. Same "whole arm movement" principle as offhand flourishing with a pen I guess.

It's a "mahlstick"
