View Full Version : 2014's Safari Colours

Oblique and Inky

Is it too soon to start guessing the colour of Lamy's next Safari? Any thoughts on whether they'll continue the neon theme with one in orange?

What would people say to a smokey grey (like the section on an AL-star) Vista?

Have they ever done a navy pen with an orange clip. That would be my dream Safari. Or a Maroon Pen with a yellow clip!

But actual thoughts on 2014.... I wonder if they'll keep up the Neon theme and do a few more of those.

[EDIT] I decided to play with this idea a bit more on my blog and I made two mockups for what I'd love to see. (If you want to read the entire post with all my rational you can click here (http://penpaperinkletter.com/dream-lamy-safari/)).

I just want a purple Safari. Like always. After the last few years, however, I have given up hope.

They did the orange recently, but it seems very popular on the secondary market. So the idea of doing a neon orange does make sense.

Like Sailor Kenshin, I'll buy the 2014 model no matter what. I even popped for the neon yellow. And it wasn't so bad. :)

Opal green like the Nexx! Or a re-release of the coffee Al-Star. That I would be quite likely to buy actually.

Or a green Safari to be released as a set with the yellow, blue and white for the World Cup in Brazil!

No, it isn't. And it is ironic that the knock-off maker recognizes the demand for a purple Safari, while Lamy looks like it's ignoring its customers. My inner two-year-old gets a little upset.

Then of course I calm down and get a life. :)

That's just not good enough, is it?

It's not bad...the color is a little deeper than I hoped, (online pics made it look paler and more 'dusty' lilac) but the pen itself writes and performs well. I've been thinking of trading mine but now I may hold on to it.

But Laura N is correct...everyone wants a purple Safari. Why don't they make one?

Purple would be nice, since everyone wants one so badly, but I would be so happy if the new color was green.

I really need to find a 2011 French Blue safari. In addition to being a cool color, it's baby blue from the year my baby boy was born. Finding the money to afford one would be a good start though.

As far as I can tell the Aquamarine was 2011 and the french blue was 2006. I don't have any money at this particular moment but I'd love to buy a user quality 2011 aquamarine from somebody. I don't care what nib it has since I'll probably just replace it with an italic.

Or - even better - precious resin!

I'm very fond of Safaris. I bought my first one 30 years ago, and it was my only pen for 10 years, finally succumbing to sudden falling-apart disorder, secondary to chronic cross-top clip-screw twiddling syndrome. They are a modern design classic, and in my opinion the ABS material is part of that. Perhaps that's why I was never taken by the Al-Star, which doesn't seem to wear as well as the classic model.

Bogon07
November 12th, 2013, 04:55 PM
The ABS plastic is incredibly well wearing and seems slightly more scratch resistance than the aluminum of the Al-Star.

The Joy is good desktop pen but that long tail can poke out an eye if you fall asleep while using one. :lazy2:

I think the Nexx is an under-rated pen hampered by the less than stylish cap.

I still want them to do Vistas in tinted colors, like Monteverde does with the Artista Crystal. Bright colors would be nice, but so would subdued colors like smoke or amber like TWSBI does.

The Safari and Al-Star get LE's. The Vista should too.

Gosh. I got a Safari (the graphite-greyish one with the black nib--sort of a 'Stealth' look) just to see what everyone is talking about. So far, I feel I might not have the right ink in it or the flow isn't right or some such. And, this may sound odd, but the nib gives me the sensation of being plastic as it rubs across the paper.....

Anyway, I'd be for a very dark purple--in the Aubergine/Eggplant range...

Checking my meds now.

Yep, Lamy love their end cap variations; from Gino Santaguida's Safari list there were also
Pink with a pink dot end cap 2009 - I thought the dot usually designates a rollerball (must remember to have a look next time I see some).*
Pink with a pink cross end cap 2011 - I think this was re-released in 2013 again.

If Lamy were to follow Pantone, the colour of the year 2014 would be Radiant Orchid 18-3224 - and we would finally have a purple Safari.

* Rollerballs have a single groove across the cap button.
The Studio rollerball has a depressed dot.

Aside from the fact that they change their formulations every couple of years, and that their new swatch books are no longer in color order so you have to go to the index in the back to find the page that has the color on it you are looking for...

Their swatch books are pretty much junk. They don't match from book to book. So if you get a printer to print to match the book, then get another printer to do the same, you aren't going to get the same color.

The caveat is satin finish Lamy Studios & Al-Stars often look a very different colour under some light conditions.

A blue bias? I'm thinking green. We've had so many green Safaris and Al-Stars recently. The lime, the apple, that first green Al-Star and now this one. My goodness. What is it with all the green?

I've been looking for the same thing. I can't find any news so it seems like they still haven't announced it.

2014 Lamy Safari Special Edition - Neon Coral (http://penpaperinkletter.com/2014-lamy-safari-neon-coral-special-edition-announced/) (It's apparently quite bright, similar to the neon yellow from last yr)

Dan, looking at your image makes it look much more red. I wonder if it's the lighting? Do you have one in hand or know if the pink and coral in that pic are under the same lighting conditions?

I don't have them in hand. The NeonCoral images are from Lamy. Probably renders. The pink is an actual photo. Lighting will definitely play a difference but we know for sure until someone has both.

Okay so click this link to see Dan's color comparison of the 2014 Neon Coral Safari versus the earlier pink Safari (http://fpgeeks.com/2014/03/the-2014-lamy-safari-color-is-disappointingly-neoncoral/).

I would have preferred a purple Safari -- make that, strongly preferred -- but I admit I am liking the Neon Coral. I don't think it's disappointing at all.

For the first time since starting to buy the LE colors, I may skip this. I'd really really have to see it in person to determine whether it offers enough visual difference to pink or red.

I would think the Neon Coral should look similar to the coral colour of the Lamy Nexx Coral's cap.
http://www.gouletpens.com/Lamy_Nexx_Coral_Fountain_Pen_p/lmy-l91.htm
Allowing for the differences in Safari ABS plastic & whatever plastic they use in the Nexx cap plus the neon-ness of the name.

Probably another one for the Safari collection.

Let's just say, that I have a built in aversion to neon. I skipped the neon yellow Safari, for the precise reason that it is quite neon, and I can't get past it. To be clear, when I was a teeny-bopper back in the 80's and I was rocking out at the school dances to Madonna, Wham!, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, I was clad in not one iota of neon. Not even one pair of the neon jelly shoes. Not even one plastic bangle bracelet. Nope. Not me.

That being said, based on these photos, the pen doesn't look very neon to me. Bright, yes. Neon, no. I like the color. A Lot!
It's fun.
Pink-ish. Orange-ish. Bright, but not overly so.
Fun.

I think they overthought this one with the "neon" nomenclature, though. Idk, that's just me. Maybe the neon aspect will really come through in person. I'm interested to see.

In other news, I cannot wait for that blue-green LAMY Al-Star to arrive.

A true coral would be lovely. I'm not at all a fan of neon though and wish Lamy would pick another theme. I suppose I'll wait to see what it looks like in person.

I still wonder why they aren't going for purple. Do you think it is because there is a Hero knock-off out there, and they don't want to compete with it? If so, why not just do a different shade of purple than the Hero? Or why not do a neon purple? But I am sure they must be doing some kind of test marketing or questioning, right? Does anyone know anything about the selection process regarding the color? Has Lamy ever talked about it?

I have to wonder why more brands don't sell purple pens. You can find pens in almost every color under the sun, but it takes some hunting to find a purple one. Even in colorful lines like the Safari, Prera, Kaweco Sport, Kakuno, Pilot Petit... there aren't any purple.
Thinking maybe purple doesn't sell that well I went on JetPens and browsed some of the brands that do sell purple pens. But, nope, purple is the most popular Ohto Dude, and is pretty high amongst the other options of the Sailor Clear Candy and Platinum Plaisir. So obviously there is a market for purple pens.

There used to be a PP purple, back years ago when they sold the pens in sets. I THINK. I know there is a purple Preppy. Saw them at the LIPS.

I bought a purple/violet Preppy at Kinokuniya. Actually the pen is transparent with a purple nib and a violet ink cartridge.

There are however many purple inks around so if you are desperate for a purple pen you could simply buy a clear demonstrator such as a Lamy Vista and fill it with purple ink.

The Lamy Al-Star has a Shiraz or Black Purple pen.

I have a purple Platinum preppy. Another brand that has a purple pen is Nemosine (I have just ordered a Nemosine Singularity in Purple). Monteverde is or has come out with a Prima that is called "purple swirl." Faber-Castell has a nice violet colored Loom pen.

I have seen the Lamy Al-Star in purple. Not really purple-y enough (if purple-y is a word).

Your reminder of how many violet inks there are encourages me to mention that my TWSBI Mini classic has Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu in it and my Lamy Vista has De Atramentis Magenta Violet in it. My TWSBI 580 has Private Reserve Plum in it, and my Pelikan M200 demonstrator has Private Reserve Purple Mojo in it.

I am thinking of branching out into reds...

Newbie here, so maybe this is a dumb question. Does Lamy release one LE color Safari each year?

I don't own one yet, and don't really know what's been previously released, but if I was to get one in any color, I'd like a deep orange color that has a shade of red in it.

Don't know, Sailor. I'm still trying to figure out what is neon about the coral version. It just looks coral-colored to me.

Mine just arrived from the lovely folks at Cultpens. It is neon. Really neon. Every bit as neon as the Neon Yellow was. I'm reasonably sure it can be seen from Space.

It's bright and fun. I'd say it falls between the regular pink (which is a blue-ish pink and staid in comparison) and the orange, but brighter than both.

Let me know if anyone want to see photos, though I think Dan had some good photos.

I just got my mom the neon coral and she loved the color and said she'd have picked it herself. Maybe she is just being nice. I haven't seen it in person yet. It wasn't to my taste but I had a feeling she'd like it. So, there's another datapoint.

I got the Coral Safari when Goulet announced it being available. It is way bright and cheerful--I have seen much duller versions of "coral". But I don't have holes burned in my retinas or anything like that...

Not so happy with the Diamine Coral ink I bought with it however, I'm looking for something with more contrast on the paper...
