Here's a short video of Copperplate (English Roundhand) with a Brause dip nib.

Uhm wow! Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm still working on trying to use a regular dip nib and not ending up with an ink splot when the nib hits the paper or having it write part of one character if i try and remove excess ink right after dipping.

When nibs are new, they are coated with a thin layer of oil which has to be removed before use. The problems you mention are usually caused by all or some of the oil still being on the nib. There are various easy ways of removing this oil. Passing the flame of a match quickly over the nib, can do the job. Alternatively, toothpaste can remove it. Or just pop it into your mouth and suck for half a minute or so.

You know that the nib is ready for use, when you dip it in ink and can see that it's coated evenly from the tip to beyond the breather hole.

I hope that this helps

It's the flat tops and bottoms with almost no retouching which had me shaking my head in wonder. I despair of those ... http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-basic/sad.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

You might find this video clip by Dr Joe Vitolo of interest. This is his method of achieving the square cut-off. Many calligraphers retouch the finished lettering to get the same effect.

Oh my word, that works for me. Thank you Ken, I doubt very much that I'd have worked that out for myself any time soon.
