HisNibs.com update -- Calligraphy kit, Stealth Pocket Rocket & Camouflage OneTouch
March 11th, 2012

Greetings,

Before I introduce the three new pens profiled in this newsletter, let me mention that as I write this -- and after selling out three times since the last newsletter -- the new Conklin Crescent-fillers http://www.hisnibs.com/crescent.htm are once again fully stocked.

First up is the new Hero Metallic Calligraphy set. As the three included nibs are more stubs than italics, this affords an inexpensive introduction to trying a specialty nib for everyday writing -- and of course they also work great for calligraphy.

We've also brought back a Pocket Rocket pen, this time from Jinhao, Like ones we've had in previous years, these are ideal little fountain pens for vest or jean pockets, or for the pen loop of an organizer.

We're also introducing the latest version of the Monteverde OneTouch ballpoint Stylus -- this time in four neat camouflage colors. I won't have stock of these until the end of this week, so please reserve your pens now.

Finally, as happens periodically, the shelves are becoming somewhat bare of a lot of your favorite Chinese fountain pen models. I hope to have my large re-stocking order ship from China later this week, and will announce their return in the next newsletter.

Hero Metallic Calligraphy set

These new sets from Hero are a terrific introduction for those that would like to experience the joys of writing with a 'specialty nib', or for use with more formal calligraphy.

The kit comes with three widths of steel nib: 1.1 mm, 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm.

Most writing kits with interchangeable nibs that bill themselves as for 'calligraphy', provide you with italic nibs. That's great if you're practicing 'beautiful writing' (the meaning of 'calligraphy'), but the edges of those nibs tend to be quite sharp. This limits their usability for regular writing for some people, as unless real attention is paid, there's a good chance that one of these edges will snag the paper as you write at normal speed.

In this kit however, Hero has provided nibs with rounded edges -- what we would commonly call a stub nib. Like the italic nib, the stub is cut so that it's wide but thin (in contrast to the round tip of a conventional nib), so that vertical strokes leave a wider line of ink, and horizontal strokes a thinner one. This provides for 'shading' and a bit of character to one's 'hand' when writing...and with a stub nib, you can write at full speed without snagging the paper.

Jinhao Stealth Pocket Rocket

http://www.hisnibs.com/JinhaoPocketStealthRocketMain_small.jpg

The pen measures a scant 3-3/4" capped, an eminently comfortable 5" posted and a virtually unusable 3-1/4" with cap held aside.

Very reminiscent of the best-selling Lanbitou pens I carried years ago (sorry, these aren't currently available), the Stealth Pocket Rocket has a matte finish and is a pen that will fit anywhere, and perfect for those times when a sequestered fountain pen is the only way to go.

Monteverde OneTouch Stylus Camouflage

Like the previous versions of the OneTouch Stylus, these versatile ballpoints also allow you to easily operate your smartphone or tablet computer's capacitive touchscreen with no fuss, muss or fingerprints!

These camouflage versions are already attracting a lot of attention from younger users especially. Although I won't receive my initial stock shipment until the end of this week, many have already pre-sold. Feel free to join in!

...and for fountain pen users, don't forget the Invincia Stylus http://www.hisnibs.com/Invincia_Stylus.htm

Conklin Crescent-filler back in stock

You've no doubt repeatedly seen the 'Sold Out' notice these past couple of weeks for the new colors of the Conklin Crescent-filler fountain pens on the website.

They kept selling out before the next re-stocking shipment arrived! As I write this...we're back to full force.
