If you have a lot of Japanese pens then one of these is essential.

I really enjoy making cases however I like them to be as good as I can make them

Here is the Nakaya style case for earthdawn I did not like the lugs for the thong and some of the stitching was not as I would like it.

Fortunately as one project ends there is another to take its place, Recently I have been buying and learning about bags and cases sometimes the leather is too far gone and needs to be replaced.
In these situations it is nice to be able to do something different reusing the old hardware.

I have only added one side of pen slots on the model there will be another two and the fourth section will be for brushes etc.

I am sure that the member who commissioned this case will be along soon

Rather than spend any more time on the model I have gone straight on with the book binders grey board there is an overlap to the left of centre while I decide where the joint will be.

Each fold will be reinforced with tape once I have found the correct tape to use. I may cut each joint and use the tape to hold the two pieces together which will give a better join.

Woohoo! My zentangle pen bag is getting made:)
I'm using about 18 pens inked to draw with. My current pen wrap is a pain. Pens fall out and can only hold 12 pens. I need more space. So I immediately thought of Michael. He suggested a bag to hold the pens. I was sold:). Michael you the best:)

I just love this stuff! I have a few large pieces of leather and I like to use it for notebook covers, bags, cases, etc. Nothing this creative, though. It's inspiring. Thank you for the the continuing series of process photos. I know it can be a pain in the neck to stop work and drag out the camera constantly.

I think I can safely share one of the colours for this case with you the outside of the case will be piped in pink I have used suede as a spacer on another project but have neither made piping or used it before.
So I have made a sample piece just to see how it will work, I have cut out sections to allow it to turn 90 degrees

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8704/16344074963_81ac36cfe5_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qUgE4V)IMG_9840_1 (https://flic.kr/p/qUgE4V) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Making pieces long enough might be another challenge it has a 2 mm leather thong inside to give it the round shape, I think a jig might be required to make the longer lengths.

As well as bags and briefcases I still make single pen cases and multiple pen cases when asked so today I am starting two projects a pair of three pen cases and a combined single pen case with a spectacle case.

The three pen cases need to match so I have started with a measuring stick

Sorry for the delay in updating this thread I have encountered some issues with this project hopefully I have overcome most of them.
This project is for a pair of three pen cases with some particular requirements

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8700/16547155164_44a1ac0978_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rdduJG)IMG_9994_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rdduJG) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The next step was to make a wooden form and the I started with the lining leather on the form then I moulded some kydex around the form finally adding the upper leather

Sometimes things just don't work and I am afraid these cases do not work for me.
If you look at the picture above the slots for the pen clips are wrong the centre is ok but the other two are wrong they should have been centre of the space from the edge of the centre not where the actually are it is only 3mm out but it is out.

I sewed a case front to see what it would look like

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7656/16724513643_450b25a7c7_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rtTvev)IMG_0121_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rtTvev) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The issues that came to light as well as the terrible sewing was the orange leather even though it was folded double it was not strong enough to take pen clips so it will need support.
Attaching the dividers was also very difficult.

To resolve these issues I have started again I have altered the position of the slots so they will look correct, the dividers will not come right to the top

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7726/17182154040_05daab75a5_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/sbk2Mb)IMG_0129_1 (https://flic.kr/p/sbk2Mb) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

This view is from the inside back so once the back has been fitted this will be impossible to see even though it has been padded and lined in leather there is also no stitching or anything else that may scratch a pen. I will glue little cushions in to the bottom before I fit the back. The slots are individual and made from kydex.

So although I have wasted the best part of a week I am sure I am on the right track now

In the post above I showed the orange thread I was thinking of using on this project but I wonder if it is too much.

As many of you will know already I could not carry a colour in a bucket

So if anyone would like to assist us the question is orange or black thread?

Thanks

I think the orange thread will make the black pop. If the person who is receiving it wants a conservative look, then black thread would be better.

MY63

Thanks for the help I think in this case it might be best to save the orange thread for another project and go with the black thread

As you can see from the pictures above moulding leather leaves crinkles in the edges this is because the leather is moulded when wet and it stretches to the new shape.

As the leather dries out it maintains the shape, the design of these cases calls for flat sides without a welt (the turned out part with the stitching) this means the sides need to be perfect,

In order to get the flat sides I realised that my mould was too small so I have made a new mould.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7756/17393058945_325ccd4f9c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/suXYsD)IMG_0138_1 (https://flic.kr/p/suXYsD) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

In this mould the leather is compressed and stretched at the same time when wet and left in the mould until dry as you can see from the slots the leather has stretched so I will wait until it has dried before I cut the slots next time.

Once removed from the mould we have this which is much more like the desired shape with the flat sides

This is one of the original test pieces there is some un dyed leather on the front and there are some areas that will need to be wet again and smoothed

MY63

The new mould may not be pretty but it works quite well

I have re calculated the position of the slots for the pen clips and as you can see I have punched the holes ready to cut the slots you will also notice that I have added another detail to the top of the opening this is to create some protection for the top of the pen, and will also provide a shape for the closing flap to follow.

The final picture shows the strap that will hold the flap in place the flap will cover 3/4of the front of the case so the strap will be positioned half way down

After finalising the shape of the top section I cut the slots after that I marked out the lines the stitches would follow with a pair of dividers. Once that was done I punched the stitching holes ready for sewing

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5342/16868712194_fc8a516c0a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rGCyrq)IMG_0162_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rGCyrq) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The next step gets a little tricky the orange leather needs to be inserted and sewn in place it also needs to be lined in kydex unfortunately it is not possible to sew through kydex.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5443/17465468366_438cba7ccf_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/sBn6fW)IMG_0168_2 (https://flic.kr/p/sBn6fW) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

My solution was to sew the upper piece to the front of the case then glue the kydex into place finally wrapping the orange leather around the kydex and gluing that in place before adding the side sections and stitching it into the back piece.

I hope everyone can understand that

Making a custom pen case is not always easy making two is more difficult.

So the inserts are complete and so are the outer pieces the back pieces are trimmed and ready to have the orange leather attached I have started the embossing which needs to be attached first.

Thanks for the comments I appreciate them, the black stitching was the right way to go too much colour reduced the impact.

The next step is embossing the initials onto the inside of the flap,

I have my own way of doing this which is a result of trial and error it works for me but I am sure that there are other methods that work just as well for others.

I start with a print out of the image to be embossed which I stick to a piece of thin leather then I cut it out, after this if I have separate components I stick them onto another print out so I can position them accurately.

https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7770/17360978339_e381c40a42_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ss8y1K)IMG_0202_2 (https://flic.kr/p/ss8y1K) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

After sticking the pieces to the backing I trim around the pieces without separating them and stick this to the inside of the flap

once the glue has gone off I will trim off the remaining paper as there is a chance it will show through I will also remove the paper from the top as the printing ink may show through lighter coloured leathers once wet with glue. It is important to maintain a good edge on the image so it will be seen through the outer leather soft edges will just disappear

The next step is to sew through the corner of the front an rear pieces which is not easy to do especially as there is kydex lining the inside and the needles will not pass through it, ideally the needles should stay within the thickness of the leather well that is the plan anyway

When I chose the leather to make this project I picked 3mm leather because I wanted it to have some stiffness to it which will become clear as it progresses I can see the finished case in my mind although I am a little unsure exactly how it is going to fit together.

The edges are a little too thick to just bend so I will need to alter that as you can see above this involves using an unusual knife sometimes called a round knife or a head knife. this knife is very sharp like really sharp and is designed to cut skin which it does very well.

I have marked a line in red about 10 mm in from the edge although the knife will cut the whole angle in one pass it is easy to get carried away so I cut the edge first and then made a second cut up to the line

The term for this is skiving there are a number of special tools for this job however I have never been able to make them work for me so I use the knife

This is my first attempt at assembly of this case.
This is the bottom and one side with the pink piping of course, I am finding this a little challenging as I need three hands and really I only have one and a half hands at the best of times.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8884/17642778839_c8e4d9a52a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/sT2Ru4)IMG_0234_1 (https://flic.kr/p/sT2Ru4) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

There are stitching holes in all three pieces which need to be held in place while the awl is passed through followed by the needles as with the large bag I remade earlier in the year this will be made inside out.
I think this case will take some time to bring together I am already thinking I should have started with the side pieces.

Thanks for looking

The outside of the case is under way now I need a better idea of how the inside module (for want of a better word) will fit into the case so I have spent today working out how it will fit.

The inside will be pink the same colour as the piping there is a structure made from grey board and hinged with tape there are 8 hinges in all but that will become clear as we progress.

This picture shows the pen slots here I have formed the leather over the card model I made previously the actual slots will be sewn to the backing piece, As they will be inside a case there will be no need for kydex they will just be leather pockets.

https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7798/17901676671_059f000e5d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/tgULMM)IMG_0243_1 (https://flic.kr/p/tgULMM) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I placed the slots in their final position just to give you an idea of what it will look like

Final positioning of the leather to form the pen slots pinned in place I need to be careful as when I attach the leather it will stretch and I really do not wish to have a join in the leather

https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7776/17875298886_2d6027f742_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/tezzAo)IMG_0246_1 (https://flic.kr/p/tezzAo) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As I suspected the glue would not hold so I am sewing them one at a time it is going to take a little time it looks like there will be space for 22 or 24 pens on the inner faces

I thought I would share a little more detail as I start to assemble the interior, if anyone is interested the pink leather is 0.6 mm nappa leather it is very soft and smooth to the touch.

This is important for assembly as any area requiring glue needs to be sanded to allow the glue to stick also sewing needs to be done very carefully it buckles and tears very easily.

https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7682/17933060366_159f44c1cb_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/tjFC4Y)IMG_0251_1 (https://flic.kr/p/tjFC4Y) by Michael Young (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

To start off I laid the backing piece onto the grey board and marked the edges with masking tape being careful not to put tape onto the areas that may be seen as even low tack masking tape can remove the top surface of the leather.

The blue board is a cutting board which I am using to line up the edges.

This should help you to get the idea there are 10 slots at the moment, At the moment I could add one more slot however my concern is that once glue is applied the leather may give so I think I will stick at ten slots which is what was requested.

The last row of stitching is not very tidy so I am going to unpick it and start again

I have been asked to make a custom case for a Raw Ebonite Danitrio pen I like Ebonite and I am a big fan of Japanese pens so I could not refuse.

The requested colours are green inside and black outside with green stitching.

Not having any green leather or thread I decided to dye my own I have some green dye for a teacher gift project which I will share later.

So late last night I started dying and had this this morning

https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7757/18158309150_2e815989d2_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/tEA5FG)IMG_0335_1 (https://flic.kr/p/tEA5FG) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Previously I have made the case solid at the bottom which has made it difficult to get the leather or suede right to the bottom my genius ide is to leave a little hole in the bottom which I pull the bottom of the liner through and the cut it off flush.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/267/18158207008_4ab3b1d4f1_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/tEzyjC)IMG_0337_1 (https://flic.kr/p/tEzyjC) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I also usually end the liner on the line where the lid ends which disguises the little bump as I have used leather which is thicker than suede I have carried it right to the bottom. Only the top 5 mm will be seen and no one but me would have noticed the slightly larger bump but I would have known it was there.

Most of the components are ready I just need to dye a length of thong which I have put away some where safe (I just need to remember where). I think it might look good green.

The thread has come out a little patchy it is waxed thread so I soaked it in hot water to remove the wax after dying I will need to re apply bees wax to sew with it.

This angle may give a better idea how the pockets fit in, I may allow a little more space in the pockets however I think the leather will give during use.

The next stage is to glue and sew the pink leather insert to the grey board structure.

Well as you can see it turned out fairly well

I need to decide how I am going to sew the pockets in place my original plan was to sew them to the leather first and then stick the leather to the grey board, however the leather stretches when the glue is applied. So my new plan is to stick everything together (tick) and sew through the leather and the grey board in one go.

The upright sections must be restricted to prevent them from moving too far apart my original plan was to fit a piece of leather into the triangular shaped gap, Unfortunately this would prevent the case closing correctly so I am looking for an alternative method of achieving this.

My other current project is this single pen case I have been awaiting the green thread to allow me to complete this case

back to my background project this is what I do when I am waiting for things to dry as there is a lot of sewing involved and I can only do so much at a time.

Anyway those who are following may remember that the outer piece as well as being inside out is also in two pieces well today is the day that I start to make those into one piece.
The challenge is the pieces are over size because the top needs to turn over to allow the metalwork to attach to the case, this means I cannot start sewing at the edge I need to start in the middle with two pieces of thread and four needles going in different directions.
This picture shows the bottom of the case I have tacked and glued the piping in place

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/292/18417623748_82018e7484_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/u4v8T3)IMG_0428_1 (https://flic.kr/p/u4v8T3) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The red lines are my guide lines for the actual size and the centre line which I have used in construction these will be covered by more pink leather once the sewing is completed.

You only sound repetitive because it has taken me so long to get things right :(
The good news is that the outer case is now in one piece and I have cut the lining strips for the inside I also cut out the basic gusset shapes which need to be sewn in place at the bottom before the case is turned the right way.
Once the case is the right way around I will be able to test fit the inner section to see if it fits.
Thanks for being so patient

It has been a pleasure but I do admit it has been more of a challenge than I first thought.

Last night I cut out the rough shapes for the gussets this morning I have refined the shape and turned the edges to give a little more strength

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/529/18637371761_3b29e6b269_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/uoVpiT)IMG_0430_1 (https://flic.kr/p/uoVpiT) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

After soaking the pieces in cold water I folded them up in the original pieces the idea being that as the pink pieces dry they will take on the shape of the original pieces.

After a few hours the pink leather has taken on the shape and the texture of the old leather gusset piece

These are the next pieces to be joined together the gusset pieces are joined at the bottom initially once the case is inverted the edges will be sewn up

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/433/18454482100_7bdd20362a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/u7L3zS)IMG_0435_1 (https://flic.kr/p/u7L3zS) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The inner section fits inside which is a relief I still need to find a way to resolve the issue of the inner piece moving around inside gluing the bottom in place is my current favourite option

The next step is to soak the whole case in water which will allow the leather to become soft enough to be turned inside out this will put the nice blue leather on the outside.

I have to be feeling brave to do this as I am pretty sure I could ruin all of the work I have done so far

Whilst I was busy I soaked a strip of pink leather to wrap this

I have been considering for some time how best to re assemble the metal frame with the handle and lock assemblies, I took them apart carefully however I noticed that one of them had a crack in the folding metal tab that secured it in place.

There are three lock assemblies the centre with the catch and the two outer ones which are sliding type catches it was one of the outer catches which was cracked.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/283/18707312866_9a45fc26b8_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/uv6Sn1)IMG_0454_1 (https://flic.kr/p/uv6Sn1) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As you can see the re assembly went well, well almost the little clip held for almost one hour before disappearing,

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/367/18548488759_f0ea44716a_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ug4Ruk)IMG_0456_1 (https://flic.kr/p/ug4Ruk) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

This is my solution yes it is a bolt and nut however the diameter of the bolt is 1 mm I had to use pliers to pick it up, I drilled a hole through the lock under the sliding piece so when closed the head of the bolt would not be seen.

Getting the nut on took some time and some choice language but I got there eventually.

The white stitching on the handle which I thought would take on the blue dye but it did not so I have ordered some blue thread I will re sew it when it arrives.

The pink and blue case needs the sides to be cut and I need to be in the right frame of mind as mistakes at this point cannot be rectified so I am putting a new edge on the clicker knife and once it is razor sharp and have drunk some tea I will begin in the mean time I have finished this sample case.
It was made to show how thin a case could be but still hold and protect three large M B 149 sized pens. The case is 40 mm thick

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/534/18191210863_1c714e290d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/tHuHdB)IMG_0481_1 (https://flic.kr/p/tHuHdB) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The pen slots are wrapped in yellow nappa leather but as I did not have enough for the inside of the flap I dyed my own piece of leather to match.

Unfortunately I managed to get a speck of red dye on the inside flap which is a bit of a shame

I don't have any pictures as it is dark now but I can tell you I have made progress on the pink and blue case today.
Firstly I replaced the white thread on the handle with blue. Then I marked the position of the fixing holes on the case frame the metal bit, this was not as easy as it sounds the holes are 1.5 mm diameter and need to be precise. I used a rivet to push the leather out from behind and ran a knife around the protrusion leaving a hole of the correct size, there were about 20 holes so this took some time.
I had made a base from grey board yesterday so I wrapped it in pink leather and glued it in place actually it will never be seen but I know it is there so it is wrapped and all of the edges are glued and sealed.
I have also fitted the nickel plated feet to the base and fixed them in place.
My main stumbling block at the moment is how to make the pen slots pivot the way I want them to when the case is open,
There is also the issue of where the pink leather on the ends will go when the case closes these and other problems are for another day.
Pictures will also follow.

I had refitted these catches and broken off one of the tabs last night I just wanted to tighten up the catch a little and broke off the other tab there is no access to the other side of the lower part of the catch. and it is not possible to find a replacement catch.

This needs to be a permanent repair so I plan on using another micro bolt and will have to cut a slot in the base section to allow the bolt to be fitted in place

Final assembly is fast approaching I have replaced the rivets in the handle with the same bolts used in the sides I also plan on replacing the rivets in the lock as well it is not the perfect solution but it is the best I can find.
I know it may not look any different but it is now strong enough so I know it will never come off

This is the end piece the question is should I add a second row of stitches from the top to the bottom and if I do should it continue across the top and down the other side I am not sure whether or not too there is no stress on this area the case will not open this far when assembled

Fitting the metal frame is a lot more challenging I have done the easy part leaving the ends to finish my plan to use thread lock to secure the nuts is not going to work I will have to hammer the ends over to stop them coming loose.

The pens in those slots are 150 mm long and 21 mm in diameter at the cap so it will hold 20 large pens as well as the two side pockets there is also space on each side for smaller note books.

I am very fortunate at the moment as one project is packed ready for shipping after sweeping up and washing all my work surfaces I started my next project.

This is a four pen case the brief is to make it as thin as possible whilst still being able to hold a M B 149 size pen.

I am going to try to keep the thickness of this case to 30 mm my recent 3 pen cases came out at 40 mm.

The starting point is plywood three pieces cut to 220 mm x 200 mm and then glued together to form a nice strong bond

I have started sanding all around the plug and the outer frame the leather is about 2 mm thick so if I sand 1 mm off all of the edges that should be sufficient.
The inside size is 98 mm but that will soon be taken up by the kydex and suede linings. more details will follow

You may remember I commented on the last large case I sent to the USA via UPS from the UK the service was outstanding and very quick. So when it came to the pink and blue case I decided to use the same company.
I made a packing box for the case yesterday morning and booked the delivery service online just before lunch time 7/1/15 the box was collected mid afternoon.
The notification I have received is the package landed at Newark airport at 04.30 am local time, the next notification is that the expected delivery date is by end of day 7/02/15.

I hope Crazyorange is at home :)

I have been asked to make a holder for 5 in x 3 in index cards however I was asked if I could add some kydex to add a little stiffness to assist with writing.

This is another new item to me so I thought I would make a sample I had some thin burgundy leather I picked up to make a wallet but have not got around to it yet

This is the front piece well the back of the front piece with the two end pieces that hold the cards in place

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/270/19376351432_edbda7eb7e_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/vwdSdG)IMG_0604_1 (https://flic.kr/p/vwdSdG) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The back piece is a little more complex as it has a slot for a pen which I have lined in black suede

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/531/19384776821_328283efdf_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/vwY3N2)IMG_0603_1 (https://flic.kr/p/vwY3N2) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

This picture shows the back panels the first piece is the pocket with pen slot the next piece is a full size piece which has the kydex glued to it, then there is another piece of leather glued to the other side to encase the kydex.

Hopefully I have left enough space to get a row of stitches around the edge as it is very difficult to sew through kydex.

What's the slot above the pen for? Business cards?

MY63
July 4th, 2015, 07:32 AM
There are three pockets in total front centre and rear, they are slightly larger than the index cards so they can hold spare cards or used cards as well as anything else around that size. the pen slot does restrict the use of the rear pocket.
The thickness is around 8 mm at present there are 6 thicknesses of leather and 1 piece of kydex I may change the leather and the thread for the next effort

I think you should go with a racing green type of thread. I think the thread is a bit light, plus since the piece is going to be in the pocket all the time....the light thread might get dirty. A darker green will hide that.

I have finished sanding the inside of the mould the next stage is to make a test pressing. I made this mould tighter than the previous three pen mould.

Although I still need to get the mould apart once the leather dries out which may be a challenge considering the pressure required to force them together.

Edit
I should offer some explanation the black case on the left has a sprung metal clip on the back for pockets or belts, Dark red had untidy stitching, Natural leather colour in large size I made it to see what it would look like, The right hand in natural colour is a pocket case designed not to bend in a trouser pocket case sample, The purple case was made following a discussion about a case to hang from a belt or lanyard.

The notebooks are just notebook covers for field notes books

Rejection is a very harsh term they are items I made that I never quite got around to finding homes for I could have put them in the classifieds and maybe one day I will.

It is not only pen cases that fall into this situation I always meant to sell this box but I put it to one side while I got on with other projects and forgot about it until you mentioned the other items (see how I did not say rejects) :)

I had planned on embossing the owners name on the inside of the lid.

Back to the current project the four pen case is moving forward, I took it out of the mould this morning expecting to find gouges in the sides of the leather where the new mould has been too tight.

Although there are marks on the leather there are no gouges or breaks in the leather I am really pleased with this it normally takes a couple of attempts.

The main requirement of this project is to make a thin case to hold medium to large size fountain pens

t I have started to work out the position of the slots for the clips on the four pen case, I have mocked up a piece of card this is my first attempt I divided the card in half then in half again then for a third time which gave me the correct number of slots but the wrong number of gaps.

Now that the outside is well on the way I need to turn my attention to the inside, because of the design of this case only the lower part of the pen is enclosed by the kydex tubes, the rest is covered by the bridge piece which you will see as we progress.

Here is the flat kydex cut from a sheet you can also see the dowel which is 21 mm in diameter there is also a piece of soft leather, the idea is to heat the kydex place the dowel on the edge and wrap the leather around it

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/545/19386201539_deb12030e5_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/vx6mj8)IMG_0659_2 (https://flic.kr/p/vx6mj8) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Warning when kydex is hot it is dangerous if overheated it will become sticky and then it will shrink. It will stick to your skin and it will burn, trust me it is not pleasant.

Next I plan on wrapping the lower interior parts in black suede as they will never be seen I have not decided on the second colour as yet

I usually buy a new bottle of dye for large projects and use up any remainder on smaller projects, so I opened a fresh bottle of dye to start the four pen case as I was also making an index card holder for the same person I used it for that first, Every time I picked up that case I had dye transfer to my hands despite waxing and polishing I still experienced dye transfer, I tried washing the case with saddle soap today and found the dye was washing off, almost a week after I had applied the dye.

Unfortunately I had just finished dying the four pen case and also a single pen case with that dye so I had to wash them off as well.

I have been trying out some tannery dye recently so I decided to use that instead.

So here is the result of todays labour as well as the front panels shown here there are also rear panels and straps for the flaps

Earlier today I cut some suede to line the inside of the notebook cover I know that only a small amount of the suede will be visible I will know.

As the cover is flexible I decided to use a latex glue which I applied with a small roller.

I often find it difficult to position the suede when placing it on the leather after applying the glue.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/451/19510919570_364f2befcf_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/vJ7yD1)IMG_0728_1 (https://flic.kr/p/vJ7yD1) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I used two small clips to secure one end of the suede while I applied the glue and then just folded the suede back into place

Thanks everyone I am pleased with the way they turned out fully lining with suede was a bad idea it made getting the notebooks in and out a challenge.
I don't know if anyone noticed but I used a different technique this time, rather than cutting the design from another piece of leather I used 2mm thong to follow the design gluing it in place as I went. It seems to have worked quite well.
My daughter does study maths and further maths but that teacher got a Lego set from the students it is her final year next year so I may have to come up with a maths design got any ideas.

A logarithmic spiral would look good. More ambitious would be (a portion of) a Penrose tiling. Or some interesting formula, like the fact that the sum of the reciprocals of the squares is pi-squared over six...

Penrose tiling very funny that would be impossible to emboss it might be something that could be carved but it would require a fine blade which I don't have,
The spiral or infinity symbol are pretty simple and would be easy to do but not much of a challenge The Pi symbol is a little more interesting.

Back to pen cases I currently have three in different stages

We are calling this the Blackhawks case, sometimes I am unsure about something with a project and I just stop and think for a while there was something about this case I did not like,
I had used the leather side of the skin rather than the suede side because the suede side was not so good, it did not look right so I have used another piece of suede and I am happy so I can now put this case together
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/330/19425723518_4c0bb47b49_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/vAzUPy)IMG_0697_1 (https://flic.kr/p/vAzUPy) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr
The front piece where the suede shows was also slightly uneven that has also been corrected.

Actually today may have been a good day to stay in bed yesterday I made a kydex tube for another case

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/464/19182950554_98705dc94c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ve8CSN)IMG_0758_3 (https://flic.kr/p/ve8CSN) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Which I then wrapped in suede

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/528/19828962375_51dd2ae96c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/wddBFD)IMG_0772_1 (https://flic.kr/p/wddBFD) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As this case is for a M B 149 sized pen I tried a 149 in it only to find it did not fit I am putting this down to the thickness of the suede and poor math so I will keep that tube for a smaller case and have started again.
The tube is rolled and I am currently rounding off the end.

I like that Fountainpagan especially this time of year during Le Tour those wheels would be very difficult though :)

The Blackhawks case has left the building as they say and is on its way to its new home.

I have turned my attention back to the four pen case and the single case in mahogany I cant show you the four pen case but I can show the mahogany

I soaked the two pieces in cold water for a couple of hours after this I formed it around the inner piece and used an adapted metal workers clamp to stretch the leather around the inner piece.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/336/19700832230_28b782aba8_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/w1TV4d)IMG_0833 (https://flic.kr/p/w1TV4d) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

After forming I applied the dye to both pieces counting the number of coats on each piece so they should be the same colour

And so to the next stage the case is not yet dry so care must be taken as the leather is very soft when wet even finger nails will leave a mark.
My pricking iron has marked the leather but has not pierced all the way through, I prefer to sew things together before they dry fully as the leather will pull together easily, although if you pull to hard you can tear through the hole.
I then use an awl to make the hole for the thread.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/324/19894013265_fba0dfbe02_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/wiY23H)IMG_0841_1 (https://flic.kr/p/wiY23H) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The main draw back is some dye transfer to the thread and of course to my hands but it wears off in a few days or if necessary it can be sanded off hands easily.

I think you can guess what I did this afternoon.

For some unknown reason I had marked the rear of each piece to match up with the other half with a sharpie after this I soaked all of the pieces in cold water for a few hours.

During the soaking process the sharpie ink transferred to backs the front of other pieces they were touching fortunately all bar one were recoverable.

Another important lesson learnt, I have also discovered that the mystery ink spots I have suffered from in the past were small pieces of dried ink from the outside if the bottles. I can now avoid this in the future.

I am not showing close ups of individual pieces as yet as they are darker until they are fully dry. lighter colours are always very difficult to get right. There is a fine line between enough dye to get the right colour and too much dye.

The piece with the sharpie marks has become an experiment the base coat is yellow dye which I have covered with a top coat of diluted oxblood dye. It will be interesting to see how this comes out.

Thanks

Michael

I have to be honest mass production is not for me as far as first coats go I can live with this but I have returned to making one at a time.

The first case started was the pink leather lined case.

In my upgrade to windows 10 I seem to have lost some images of the making of this particular case I will endeavour to find them and post them when I do.

Until I put the wet leather cap on to my desk next to a metal tool which touched the cap and left a black mark. The mark is a chemical reaction and it changes the leather permanently.

To get this look I dyed the leather yellow and when that had dried I made up a diluted batch of oxblood dye and applied that over the yellow I applied less at the edges to allow more yellow to show through. It is very much a work in progress.

I have been asked to make a wrap for six pens in red leather.

I cut some thin leather and soaked it ready for dying

The next step is to bring the front and rear pieces together there will also be an outer cover more of that later

Ok so now I am able to admit this does not work well at all even though the leather is only 0.8 mm thick the fold over flap does not roll well in fact it resists rolling.

Back to the drawing board which in my case is a piece of plywood my next attempt will be in the same style but this time the inner piece will be in suede which is much more flexible than the leather.

I enjoy embossing so I often look for opportunities so when I was asked to make a special pen wrap I saw such an opportunity.
It is a time consuming process I printed two copies of the initials and glued one to a piece of leather which I then cut out.

I then glued these letters on to the second set which left me with a sheet of paper with the leather initials on top. I do this because I have had problems in the past with spacing the letters when doing the next steps.

Time for some pictures the start of the embossing process wet coloured leather is laid over the sheet with the initials on it then pressed into place.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5791/20950248396_7e4fee1e51_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/xViuXf)IMG_1233 (https://flic.kr/p/xViuXf) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As I progressed I added some glue to the letters lifting half of the top piece each time once I was happy with the result I left it to dry

MY63
August 30th, 2015, 01:43 PM
I have to be honest Monz I am as with most of my leather working feeling my way and learning as I go.
I still class embossing as a dark art I don't always know if it is going to work or not especially with small designs.
To emboss the lid of a pen case it would be necessary to make a lid and then wrap that in a thinner leather which would be embossed adding another layer of leather might make it look huge.
But I am sure there are ways around that problem:)

MY63
August 31st, 2015, 11:53 AM
I decided to add the leather ends to each side of the suede pen pockets as you can see in the picture. I have also shaped the flap this is to prevent it from moving when rolled.

I normally make more than one single case at a time and as I had this blue outer which was supposed to be turquoise but I over dyed it and it is a richer blue.

I have to be honest I was aiming for a darker turquoise maybe a couple of coats more than required and it is blue so I started the turquoise again and decided to finish the blue one with my favourite yellow.
It is not an order so it will be sold when it is finished.

I have been asked to make a pair of single pen cases with wooden toggles so I plan on sharing each step

A flat piece of kydex sitting on a piece of leather which in turn is sitting on a granite slab.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/650/22055551122_fe05e9b999_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/zAYsWN)DSC_0291[1] (https://flic.kr/p/zAYsWN) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

After heating the kydex with a hot air gun a piece of dowel the required size 23 mm in this case as the desired internal size is 22 mm. Once the correct temperature has been reached the piece of leather is used to roll the kydex around the dowel.

I feel that I should point out that when overheated kydex becomes very soft and can stick to your skin and burn badly so if you wish to have a go then please be careful.

At this time there are three different woods top left is sapele which is a type of mahogany top right is oak and bottom is walnut the owners have the choice of which wood they prefer.
They have been shaped with a file and a power tool and as you can see each one is slightly different.

The next step in the making of a pen case is to take the kydex tubes and enclose them in suede and leather

Michael,
Two questions:
1. What type of glue do you use to glue the kydex seams?
and
2. What type of glue do you use to affix the suede to the kydex cylinders?

Hi John
At the moment I am using titebond ethol cyanoacrylate based super glue along with an aerosol activator which does make the glue go off instantly so be careful.
If you plan on using kydex be very careful when heating it if you overheat it as it becomes very soft and very sticky without warning.
For the suede I use PVA after sanding the tubes and for the outer cover I use contact cement

Once the leather has been cut I soak all of the pieces in cold water until it is soft enough to take the required shape. everything happens quickly now once the leather is wet I like to shape it then dye it and sew it before it dries out completely.

MY63

Here is the next step

Contact adhesive will stick while the leather is still damp and the stitching will pull nice and tight with the damp leather so I like to sew the main section before it dries out fully.

If anyone is alert there is one case with different stitching

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5683/22128065522_aa87005fd6_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/zHo7X5)DSC_0349[1] (https://flic.kr/p/zHo7X5) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The main body of the case needs to be sewn and trimmed to allow the top to be glued and shaped before it dries out.

I finished these pieces late last night. the next step is to sew the tops and trim them before adding the finishing touches.

You must have a good leather source. I am envious of the grain on that leather! Most of the veg tan I find around here is very smooth.

An alternative you might try is to leave out the suede. If the leather will support it, you can sand the flesh side to achieve a 'suede' texture. It depends a lot on the leather whether it will work though. If the leather has a stringy consistency this approach won't work.

Armstrong yes I do have very good leather sources Le Prevo in Newcastle Upon Tyne is my main supplier but I am also very particular about the leather that I buy.
My main reason for having a lining in my cases is to cover the Kydex centre section.

Some time ago I discussed with a member a pen case in the style of a cigar case I have been thinking about how it would be made and also about how I make all of my cases.

Rather than struggle to form the case and then sew it together which due to the issues with my hand I have been finding increasingly difficult I have made the case flat and plan to shape it later.
