I am sorry it has been so long since my last post here.

This is my most recent project I was inspired by a chap at Dragonthorn leathers in the US who made a pen case from leather and kydex for added protection.
Anyway after a few attempts this was my second case

The red case is my first effort with kydex I did make another while I waited for the kydex to arrive.

I have cut back on my box projects due to being unwell and wanted to try something lighter I have found leather very easy to work with and when kydex reaches the correct temperature it is also very easy to form.

Thanks for looking

Michael

Very nice case. Are you making these for sale?

I have thought about it and to be honest I am not sure.
I have made seven slightly smaller than the first ones to see how long they take to make and they take hours.
As each one is hand cut dyed and sewn together but if you really want one and had an interesting pen to swap then I could be persuaded.
The second batch look like this it is veg tanned leather dyed with oil or spirit dye then waxed with carnauba wax. Lined with high quality suede. I made this one for a friend who has a thing for Mont Blanc pens.

love them. I either need to learn to make those or need a supplier of them for my pens. I see the basics of what you did, do you mind sharing some photos along the way as tutorial?

MY63

I dont mind sharing at all there is a chap in the United States who makes them professionally but they are way out of my price range so I decided to make my own.
I started with two pieces of 18 mm thick plywood and cut out a pen shape
Like this.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7375/10933401154_16dbd83771_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/10933401154/)

I kept the other piece which I will call the negative I fixed the positive piece to another piece of wood then I heated up a piece of kydex and placed it in the mould

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2811/10707587703_b908637ef9_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/10707587703/)

Pressure from clamps then once cold I removed the excess

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5527/10628376315_450b326f0b_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/10628376315/)

the next stage involved putting a piece of suede over the form applying glue and forcing the kydex over the top the moisture from the glue helped the suede to stretch and keep the shape.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5511/10989860735_4303639338_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/10989860735/)

The form was too tight to have suede kydex and leather all together so I formed the leather wet and then applied it to the other two parts before it was dry and stretched it to fit by hand.

I made up a back section a piece of suede and a piece of leather and a piece of kydex

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5540/10989868855_6684ebfac8_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/10989868855/)

I then joined the two pieces together with glue .

The next stage was to dye the case the desired colour, I bought six colours for seven cases dont ask why.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5519/11032521946_7733721078_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11032521946/)

A second coat and the colour was fixed

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3699/11063785423_f9007e0c97_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11063785423/)

I started sewing this case up and at this point realised that I had missed out the loop to hold the flap in place so I unpicked what I had done but in doing so weakened the thread, so that when i got back to the same point again the thread snapped

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5515/11241778006_a64b61fe55_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11241778006/)

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3732/11242892156_66f4594ca0_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11242892156/)

It took over an hour to sew that side each time.

I need a stitching pony which I cant afford at this time of year so I will be making my own next week although I have a very busy week so it might take a little longer.

What have I learnt needles are sharp leather awls are sharper, leather dye is meant to dye skin hands are skin wear gloves, Kydex gets soft when it is hot because it is hot wear thicker gloves.

I used goat hide for the first ones because it is thin and easy to work with it is also a third of the cost of kip leather the original maker used.

I am happy to help anyone who wants to have a go and answer any questions

Thanks for looking

Michael

How thick is your kydex? What kind of thread did you use?

Thanks for the tutorial.

MY63
December 7th, 2013, 04:10 PM
Kydex is 0.75mm not so sure about the thread it is waxed thread for leather.
I have bought the kip hide as I want to try to make a case for my new Sony phone.
If you do have a go then please post some pictures.

I am also in the process of making two other leather kydex cases these are larger than my previous cases they have been designed to ahold a pen 150 mm long and 20 mm in diameter. I punched the stitching holes last night but have been a little side tracked by some important birthday, no not mine that is next week   sorry I thought it was funny.

I was working on the second of the pair of cases quite late last night, I trimmed the case to size at any point a small mistake can wreck one of these projects, In this instance I trimmed a little too close to where the stitching was due to go it would have been ok but would not have looked right to me so I have made a new top piece.

I hope everyone has had a great day and thanks for looking

I have only just started making cases from leather and in particular cases with Kydex it is used for making gun holsters and knife sheaths it is formed by heating.
When I was asked if I could make a triangular case for an Omas 360 I decided to give it a go.
The first step was to make a mould from wood then cut a piece of Kydex and form it over the mould at this point I drilled a hole to take the stud fastener.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5483/11588752463_bb92b34430_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11588752463/)

The next step was to soak a piece of leather which I formed on the wooden mould first then I rubbed a pencil on the brass fastener and laid the leather on top the pencil on the brass rubbed off onto the inside of the leather and i was able to punch the hole in the correct place.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7317/11589349106_75f6e77956_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11589349106/)

The inside was lined with navy blue suede I have also added an extra piece of leather to cover the screw fitting of the stud which is under the suede.

I made the back and lid in one piece which I formed wet I made the tab slightly longer to make opening and closing easier.

Thanks for the complements I am not sure wether to add another coat of dye this is one coat the first time I used the red dye it went black where I had applied too much.
When I asked the supplier they told me that the leather changes as it is stretched over the form and absorbs the colour differently. So maybe it was not my fault.
I keep thinking that this case would look really good in green and I don't know why.
Anyway it's back to the round cases for now unless anyone has got any ideas for the next challenge until I am fit enough to return to wooden boxes.
Thanks

Hey have you been standing behind me :D
I have been stealing ideas sorry I mean searching for inspiration I was thinking some sort of fold over case six pens on one side and note book on the other side.
Or a three pen case with individual flaps to secure the pens armoured with kydex of course. I do worry about the size of the cases as they are large and adding three together you are talking 8 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide.
Unless someone else has a better idea.

I thought that I would share my latest prototype with you some time ago i read a post where someone was looking for a case to hold pens securely and also to display them on a desk.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7329/11816058973_d432a09fdd_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11816058973/)

The openings at the outside will be closed when the case is made in leather.
This idea has been rumbling around inside my head for some time so i thought I would make a prototype to see what it would look like.

these little studs are called Sam Browne studs in the UK maybe different elsewhere.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2835/11816215304_31596cc1e4_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11816215304/)

The stud and strap that maintain the case in the closed position also turns around and fastens on the inside to allow the case to stand up displaying the pens on a desk

I think this is pretty neat! If opened like a book, the pens shouldn't go flying. Does the strap hook/latch when open to keep it from spreading/falling flat? Or did it just photobomb the picture? heh

I also like the way the pens nestle or interlock for a slimmer profile when closed.

Hi Jeph thanks for that I dont think that it is possible for the pens to fly out, The pens could not be removed until the case was folded to the open position.

Yes Kia the stud and strap would stop the case sliding open when standing well that is the idea anyway.

I am undecided as to wether kydex would be needed in such a case but the next stage will be to make some wooden forms for the shapes required

Thanks

I might need to make the slots a little longer to stop the pens from rubbing in transit.

I have decided to start making the forms for the new case and thought you might like to see the process from the start.

Dowels 18 mm and 21 mm cut to 200 mm in length I dont have to make the cases that long but I wanted to give myself the option to make longer cases.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3697/11851429554_b050dcea5f_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/11851429554/)

I am not going to glue the dowels in place I will use screws to allow different formats.
The next step is to cut the bases and shape the end of the dowels that will be used to form the leather.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the inclusion of the kydex?

Thanks

The next stage is to make the dowels into a form I have shaped one end roughly into a shape I might use a machine if it stops raining.

I have made two of these forms thinking about it now it might have been better to shape both ends and use opposite ends of the form for each piece.

My other concern is the size of the case when finished it looks like 10 in x 8 in or 255 mm x 200 mm.

Thanks for looking

Well, that's a case on the larger side, true, but then, it's probably more for storage or traveling than for every day carry, unless you are an artist with a dozen different nibs you use every day. There are times to carry that many - say to a pen meeting or to show a friend your collection - but I don't think too many people throw that many pens in the messenger bag every day. So I wouldn't worry about it. Any case for that many pens will be about as big.

Now if they do carry that many pens every day, well, I carry a bunch myself, but I'm the sort of person who tend to carry so much stuff around that certain relatives have been wont to state our great grandparents emigrated with less, and probably they did. If one is the kind of person who does indeed carry ten or twelve pens every day then I suspect one is also the sort of person who carries stuff in general, and is used to it, and has a bag half the size of Oklahoma to carry it in.

I am sure that you are not the only person who carries large numbers.
You are right that 10 pens will take up the space of 10 pens my initial thoughts about this case were to put the pens as close together as possible.
The pens will be separated by two thicknesses of the leather which is 2 x 2.5 mm.
The difficult part will be forming the leather into the required shape my first attempt is using a scrap piece of leather which is 3 mm thick it takes quite a bit of pressure to form the shape and it is difficult to avoid marking the wet leather.

Just to explain wet veg tanned leather is very soft and is quite easy to form it can also be carved easily and will take impressions from almost anything including finger nails and debris on the working surface.

I wonder, in this tricky situation, if using longer dowels than the work piece, possibly thinner than the dowels for the form itself, and pushing them down between the dowels you are forming over would help get the leather down there in the hollows without needing to poke it so much with fingers. Also, maybe the thin cotton gloves used by caterers and so forth would help with avoiding some marks? Just random thoughts, never having worked with this leather I certainly can't call it advice!

I thought it was time to update my 10 pen case there have been a few little issues to sort out but I think I have a clear idea of what the finished case will look like now.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7444/12326774504_37566132ec_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/12326774504/)

I have moulded the pieces and trimmed them to the correct shape the two pieces you can see in the picture make up one case.
The dowels are there to align the two pieces together so the pen slots will inter lock with each other.
When opened out the case will form a stand.

Multi pen case project update,
In the last picture you could see the leather formed to make the pen slots with dowels to show where the pens would go.
The picture below shows the inside of that piece it has been lined in super soft Kip leather.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3673/12371631714_0739c8d65f_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/12371631714/)

The design of this case called for a case that could hold pens of different sizes from under 10 mm in diameter up to a maximum of 21 mm.
This caused a little head scratching and some serious tea drinking but eventually the idea of using the pens clips to hold them in place popped into my head.
So I have made cuts into the lining to allow the clips to be used.

This means that most pens will be easy to get in and out of the case it has been designed to fold back on itself to form a triangle so it will stand on a desk when open.

Thanks for looking comments good or bad would be appreciated.

My quest to make the perfect pen case continues I mentioned earlier in this thread I was looking to make a three pen case,
I was asked to make a case that could hold three pens and a notebook.
Well here is where I am up to,

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2826/12527035754_69cf9996d4_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/12527035754/)

As you can tell from the picture above I am quite far on except that I did not like the holder for the notebook so that became the inside and I made a new outer cover.

The next step is to trim and fold over all of the edges of these pieces then sew and stick them to the inner liner the inner liner will then be sewn a stuck to the outer cover.
I could just stick and sew everything to the outer cover but then you would see all of the stitches on the outer cover my way you will only see the stitches around the edges.

Thanks
Michael

School holidays have slowed work this week I have also been clearing out rubbish from our garage there are boxes in there that have not been opened since we moved here 16 years ago.
The pieces you can see in the picture are the pen slots and closing flap and also the notebook holder they are sitting on the piece of leather which will form the inside lining they will be glued and sewn into place then the inner piece will be glued and sewn into the outer cover.

I have been putting off dying the red ten pen case for no other reason than I find the red dye difficult to apply.

Anyway today was the day.

I finished applying the dye 10 minutes ago and it is starting to dry now

The second one has not been sewn as yet I want to use a contrasting thread gold black or white are the current choices

Any of the three stitching colors you listed for the single case will be good.

Black for the 10-pen case (simply opinion on my part here). I think the turquoise would pair up better with a navy or dark blue case. Then again, it is an interesting enough pairing with the red to start a few conversations.

I have been asked before if I could make a round case and at the time thought it was above my skill level, I was asked again yesterday and thought I would give it ago.
I rounded over the end do a piece of dowel and cut a piece of leather to the correct length.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3679/12863943913_71aaa6a2ef_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/12863943913/)

I then wet the leather and wrapped it around the dowel.

Then I kept sewing until I reached the end. I then wrapped another piece of leather on top of the first piece and sewed that together to form a lid.

Unfortunately the dye has dried unevenly and it does not look so good at the moment. I spoke to the supplier this afternoon and they suggested I dye the leather before assembly which seems like a good idea.
I am also a little unsure of the position of the thong as the stitching can give and it may be possible for the thong to pull free in time with use.
I could resolve this by punching holes in the body of the case or by stitching the thong into place during the sewing process.
There is also an option to put lugs on the side as in the original but that would just be copying someone else's idea and I prefer to put my own twist on things.
Another pack of kydex arrived this morning so I might make a few tomorrow I will need to make five or six to get it right I made a blue one with red stitching of my other single case which I really liked so I think that will be first followed by a black with red and I picked up some blue thread today so red with blue is also looking good I should be pretty good at them by then

Crazyorange price wise the other single pen cases sell for £50 the round ones are more work at the moment but I think that is enough for a single pen case anyway let me know what you think.

I know discussing prices is not allowed on fpn but I can't see anything in the rules here if I am wrong please let me know

That case is gorgeous, Michael!

One way to put a cover like that on is to make the cover part with a channel up each side. The you attach the thong to the base however you wish, thread it up through the one channel and down through the other and attach it at the other side. The top can slide up and down on the thong, but the thong is secured at both ends and you can always knot it or whatever to keep it tight.

I think I recall seeing this solution on cases for Medieval tablet cases - that is, for tablets of wood with wax in the recess, the wax being used to write upon, as it was in Roman times. Sort of a 15th century field notes, I guess. (They were actually used for many centuries, and came in many sizes and some were very fancy, some quite plain.)

I did try making myself some tablets. Life interrupted before they needed a case, so I never tried this myself. I think it's usually done with leather formed into a hard shape, but that is more or less what you end up with using the kydex, so I see no reason why it would not work.

Thanks Crazy orange it was quite a challenge to get the colour to match on different pieces of leather the dye takes differently on different thicknesses and also on leather that has been stretched and worked.

Scrivelry as ever your thoughts are unique and intriguing however for this project you can see two large pieces of leather one is the inside and is quite thin the other is the outer cover and is twice as thick to give the case some strength.
The pen holders and the notebook holder will be sewn and glued onto the inside piece then the inside piece will be glued and sewn onto the outer piece there will be lines of stitching along the fold lines to encourage the leather to bend.

Thanks

Michael

I don't know if I have mentioned this before but one of the challenges of making this type of pen case is that it is designed for large pens and I wanted to be able to put small pens in as well.
I have experimented with various pen clips and other bits and pieces I came across these they are black velvet I could not make them myself but they were so reasonably priced.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7369/13128431134_cb3e2ca402_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/13128431134/)

The velvet is meant to be on the outside so I have turned it inside out so the pen sits in the velvet this will allow smaller pens to be carried without them rattling around.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3818/13128673794_247b0c6447_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/13128673794/)

I think these will work with my larger multi pen projects resolving the issue of smaller pens being lost in the large slots.

The owner really wanted black English bridle leather for the outer part of his case I have never used bridle leather before and was keen to get the right product.
It is not as easy as it sounds to get English bridle leather and it is also very expensive J E Sedgewick are one of the top Tanners in the UK but do not sell to the public I contacted one of their distributors who agreed to treat me as a trade customer and even agreed to give me a small discount.
So after three weeks of research and emails and a telephone conversation I eventually acquired a hide.

Triple black, black pen slots on black suede inside black English bridle leather

Multi pen case in black.
I do have three large projects on the go at the moment so it can get a little confusing for me and for those watching it does help that they are different colours.
Anyway over the last few days I have started sewing the inner part of this case.
Unfortunately my problems with my right hand really slows things down

I have been advised to start dying my leather before I form the cases and to consider using an airbrush he also told me where I could get one for a reasonable price so I now have an airbrush with compressor I just need to learn how to use it.

The next step is to apply the suede to the inside of the tubes the suede looks a little dark as it is still wet when I took this picture.

Once the glue has set I will trim all round and will cut back the top edge so I can fold over the top piece of suede to give a nice neat edge.

I don't think I have explained that I am going to make this case in two parts the inner pen section in turquoise suede and the outer pouch in leather of another colour yet to be decided I do have some English black bridle leather, as well as some Italian matt bridle also in black.

The lid closes with the help of a Sam Browne stud fastener
There is still some finishing off to do edges need to be trimmed and sealed.

You are entirely welcome!

In this picture, where you say that you are not yet happy with the edges, could it possibly be the uneven surface of the leather which is making them less even? I have no idea how one gets around that...

Thank you both
I am guilty of being ...... Ok a bit of a perfectionist I only use top quality materials and I want my work to match that.
The problem with the edges is four different materials comming together suede leather outer leather and latex glue.
Even a really sharp knife drags through the latex glue making it difficult to cut it is also quite thick, the latex glue does not sand as well as pva glue but it is flexible. I have applied some acrylic edge kote and then beeswax on top which has evened it out a little, I will get there in the end I have put too many hours into it to give up now.

Thanks

Thank you
I would be happy to help you through each step as there were a number of steps that I did not show.
This case was made for someone in the UK and will be on its way tomorrow so I don't feel comfortable discussing the price.
I am making a three pen version which is as yet unsold, I cant find anything in the rules about discussing prices but I will hold off just in case.

I thought I would share some of the other cases I have been working on whilst making the four pen case

The first is a Japanese inspired case in Aqua green with red stitching

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3857/14474766226_56e9a7265a_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/o45XGW)IMG_7721 (https://flic.kr/p/o45XGW) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

The walnut toggle also works as a pen rest

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2917/14311215690_80a61313c3_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/nNCHQ7)IMG_7718_1 (https://flic.kr/p/nNCHQ7) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

The next case is made from a piece of leather that I found in the suppliers scrap bin it is thicker leather with suede already attached

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3844/14500121893_bfd0047779_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/o6jV4B)IMG_7706_1 (https://flic.kr/p/o6jV4B) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

I have experimented with a different type of stitching and lid

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2937/14296495090_27eec05e71_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/nMkgUE)IMG_7709_1 (https://flic.kr/p/nMkgUE) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr

This lid is not right for this case as there is no kydex inner which allows the tube to compress when fastening the lid which would bring the metal back of the stud into contact with the pen.

I have often been asked which cases I use for my pens the truth is some of my collection live in an adapted writing slope and the rest live in a drawer in my desk.
I now have four oversize pens that I use and have decided that they need a home.
So here goes black English bridle leather because I have it

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2904/14562235083_185f941721_z.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/14562235083/)

Marked out ready for groves to be cut,

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2938/14562235883_1e293127bd_z.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/14562235883/)

After cutting the groves to allow the leather to bend I sealed and dyed the edges then lined the inside with black suede,

Today I started the inside and decided to go with yellow for the pen slots so I cut some thin (0.9 mm) leather and dyed it yellow. I formed some kydex around 25 mm dowel and covered it in the yellow leather.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5479/14572755433_580ece6207_z.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/14572755433/)

I have a smart looking carving hammer made from high grade steel and I have learned an important lesson steel and wet leather do not mix. I used the hammer to weigh down the slots while they were drying in clamps unfortunately the steel reacted with the tannins in the leather turning it black, it is in a place where it may not be seen.

There are good days and not so good days.
Yesterday was a not so good day.

I changed the internal size of the pen slots by buying a larger dowel not thinking that I had already made the outside cover DOH I think is the appropriate term. there is a simple solution I will remove one of the slots and make it a three pen case.

After dying the leather I formed it over the pieces of Kydex and clamped everything together and placed my steel carving hammer on top to hold it all in place.
I should have remembered that steel reacts with the tannin in leather and turns it black, Like this

it is not the end of the world as it will be covered by the outer cover.

The four tubes were wrapped in suede I added an extra piece of leather to allow for a magnetic catch to be fitted flush.

OK next project

I have a rectangle of leather 180 mm x 320 mm

And it is based on something I have made before

Over to you see if you can guess what it is going to be

It is odd I know but I spent a long time looking at the round pen case I made for an FPG member that I have been trying to think of a good reason to make another one although it is about one third of the size of the original
So from the rectangle of leather mentioned above we now have this

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5551/15051393069_b55eda760a_z.jpg (https://www.flickr.com/photos/47080473@N07/15051393069/)

The idea is that the leather shell will offer protection and a simple pen wrap will separate the pens inside.
I am searching for suitable fabric for the wrap if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the input.

Whatever you choose, it will be gorgeous. You can find some nice fabric swatches on Etsy, probably eBay, too. To find mine, I just searched "kimono silk."

Here is yesterdays picture of the small round case the bottom is now sewn in place I need to practice tis as it is not very neat.
This is a prototype and will live on my desk so a little untidy stitching is OK
I am not planning on dying this case

This may sound funny but it still acts like skin it darkens when exposed to sunlight if we get any sun today I will put it outside so you can see the difference.
I am learning to sew around the top now but the holes on the body are six to an inch the holes on the lid are a on a smaller diameter so I am doing it by eye and it looks a little untidy,

No they are just leather the top one is lined in pink the bottom is a single thickness it is kip leather so quite soft.
I have been looking at wrap types for the inside of the round pen case and saw a post on fpn about these I am thinking of making one that holds 10 to 15 pens for the inside of that case.
I may visit the material shop and see what tweed or other material they have.

Thanks Tiffany
It will be a wrap but I am not sure of exactly how it will work, I may back it in suede and then attach it to a leather outer cover.
I wanted black hounds tooth but went with a slightly cheaper option for a first attempt.
It is coming from the Scottish Islands where it is made and will have the required tags to prove it is the real thing.

Finally my 90 degree leather clamp is finished now I can make square leather boxes.

The first picture shows the clamp open with two bone folders separating the oak strips

I have not been able to work on any projects over the last week due to a nasty chest infection however that has given me time to search for new projects in custom bags and get an idea for a pen case.

While watching an antiques show on tv I saw this item and thought I have three special pens that need a home.

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5601/14920262324_8ce41117c5_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oJsfb9)IMG_8807 (https://flic.kr/p/oJsfb9) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

A little smaller here and a little taller there and voila a three pen case,

I the odd minute I have been able I took a piece of 5 mm leather which I marked out 180 mm high and trimmed I left it long until I decided how to get the required shape.

Using three pieces of dowel taped together and wrapped in thick kitchen towel I made the form then soaked the leather and wrapped it around.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3946/15536332732_0b8ea612f2_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pETLrJ)IMG_8803 (https://flic.kr/p/pETLrJ) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Here you can see the wet leather around the form the kitchen towel stops the leather falling into the gaps between the dowels as it dries out.

Thanks for looking

Time has flown and I have not made much progress with this case I have three special pens that need a home so I have returned to this case.

I have lined the interior with black suede I then made three pieces of cardboard which I wrapped in suede and rolled into tubes.

I should have realised that this would be almost impossible to sew together I managed to do it by cutting two needles in half and using a pair of pliers to put the needles through the leather.

I cut a piece of leather to join the top and bottom which I wrapped in yellow nappa leather.

So once the kydex is formed I can start to work on the inside cutting a piece of suede larger than required it seems to pull in once the glue dries

When I am happy with the placement I apply glue and fold the remainder back over the kydex

The next stage is to dye the leather for those of you with a logical mind or some common sense then yes I should have dyed the leather first, but I have found that as the leather stretches over the form the colour changes.
It might have made life easier if I had dyed the case before gluing it together anyway I did it the hard way.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7477/15958398271_68667efe00_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qjbXPM)IMG_9073_1 (https://flic.kr/p/qjbXPM) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

These pictures were taken just after the dying was finished so the colour will lighten a little as it dries it will then darken when the wax is added so the colour is a bit of guess work.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7555/15340750543_1035f156c9_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pnBmF2)IMG_9072_1 (https://flic.kr/p/pnBmF2) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

This picture is the round Nakaya style case the kydex liner is not in the picture but as today progresses I hope that you will see it take shape

I have used Fiebings leather dye in this project if anyone would like to have a go then I would advise you to dilute the dye 50 / 50 with Fiebings dye reducer and apply more coats, and apply it to wet leather.

The little tabs there is one on each piece with a cord or thong running through to act as a securing tie.

I was reading a post about safely carrying a single pen daily on another forum, where someone mentioned carrying a mobile phone around their neck and I started thinking about how I would solve this problem.

This is my first prototype I cut a slot in a piece of leather that I will use for the back of a case

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/16187093682_b6babc935c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qEp617)IMG_9248 (https://flic.kr/p/qEp617) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I cut a smaller piece of leather one end of which I shaped like a nib and fed the other end through the slot added a 'D' ring and glued it in place. I will sew through all three pieces later.

Thanks

The next stage in this process is to dye the case the required colour as all of my dye has been stored for the holidays I had thought of leaving it natural but there was a blemish which would have been on the front I decided to dye it next week.
I found a used dauber on my desk which I thought was either black or dark brown it turned out it was purple never mind I soaked it in a small amount of water and applied as many coats as possible.

I lightly shaped two pieces of kydex to provide the rigidity I rounded the corners to prevent accidents when in the front pocket

I have had it in my mind to make another folding style multi pen case and yesterday I decided to form some leather

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8668/15618959344_7600b40725_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pNcfsu)IMG_9341 (https://flic.kr/p/pNcfsu) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

My original plan was to make a five pen case three on one side and two on the other I assumed I could form all five slots in one go clearly it was possible however once I had formed the section it seems a shame to cut it up so I am now considering leaving it and making a large 9 pen folding case / display stand.

In this style
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7425/14174870071_cf7bce51a8_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/nAzV2z)IMG_7344_1 (https://flic.kr/p/nAzV2z) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Looking back I started this pair in January of 2014 and finished in May of that year, I did say that I would not make another but I might :)

Here is my second effort at the pocket pen case it was still wet when I took this picture

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7530/16252809835_599688bce2_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qLcU8e)IMG_9354 (https://flic.kr/p/qLcU8e) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

My single pocket pen case has now moved to a third prototype as the second version although it worked well in the fact that it would not bend had an issue in that the front piece was a little thick for a clip to ride over without stress.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7524/16269658821_089c606909_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qMGfJZ)IMG_9363 (https://flic.kr/p/qMGfJZ) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

So number three is now almost ready for suede, I have had a thought of making an outer case for this pocket case so it would fit inside

http://www.thepenguardian.com/products.html

Similar to these by pen guardian although mine would have a Kydex inner so it would offer a lot of protection

If anyone has any thoughts I would like to hear them.

I have started making a custom case for an fpn member in the style of the one in the centre of the picture above.

I cut out the leather and made a grove for the stitching front and back I then used a pricking iron to mark where each stitch will go.

After this I used an awl to make the holes for the stitches and glued the suede liner in place.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7569/16278835385_a0a985121c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qNvhBB)IMG_9368 (https://flic.kr/p/qNvhBB) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I now need to soak the leather in cold water so I can form it to the correct shape to hold the pen once this is done I will apply black dye to the wet leather.

MY63
January 15th, 2015, 01:40 PM
Final steps on this case I shaped a piece of 15 mm dowel to match the lower half of a pen soaked the leather and pushed the dowel into place after that I used a piece of 20 mm dowel to shape the upper part of the case it is a bit of trial and error to get this correct.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7516/16100399428_ee9e4dab69_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qwJKPA)IMG_9382 (https://flic.kr/p/qwJKPA) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

As the leather dries it will shrink slightly I need to remove the dowel before it is too dry so it will be a snug fit for the pen.

I am also working on a surprise project but I cant tell you because it is a surprise

Here is the finished case it is two pieces of 5 mm thick leather lined in black suede and sewn together.
The leather has been soaked and dried which has hardened the leather so it will retain its shape but also so it will not bend or deform in any way.

Unfortunately I am still having problems sewing after my fall in November it is not as straight as I would like and it took me three days doing a little every few hours but I got there in the end.

Michael, I will be posting pics. Long story short after traveling home and not sleeping for 36 hours....I came home to a very sick hound. He had emergency surgery on Friday. Life is a bit overwhelming, but I found some time today to pay back your kindness. I made a donation to your doggie society in your name. I figured it was the best way to say thank you.

Thanks for the healing thoughts. He's on the mend. Had bladder stones removed, so his poor belly is covered in stitches. The little guy is uncomfortable.....I was I could bear his pain. But he did growl at my mom....he's getting back to his normal behavior.

Thanks Sam I am very sorry to hear that one of your dogs has had to have such major surgery although I am happy to hear that normal behaviour has resumed.
Thanks for making the donation it is very kind of you times are hard for dog rescue in the UK.
I hope that you can get some rest before returning to work.
Thanks again

Since making these two pen cases I have been thinking about a new case along similar lines

I am thinking of two pieces of thick leather but full length of the pen maybe with a flap or some type of fastener I would love to hear any ideas,
It may be a few days before I start a prototype I have had some treatment on my right hand today so it is a little sore.

it seems like some time since I made a single pen case.

I have altered the shape of the front of this form this is the first case from this form.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8627/16465489078_c07cd6747c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/r5ZWfJ)IMG_9575 (https://flic.kr/p/r5ZWfJ) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I shaped a piece of kydex to the form by heating an pushing it into place the next step was to soak a piece of veg tan leather and shape it to the form over the top of the kydex

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8671/16628264486_b059dd8765_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rkocHh)IMG_9574 (https://flic.kr/p/rkocHh) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

To get the correct shape for the back section I used the previous case as a template

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8622/16652800541_33c977328f_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rnxXqH)IMG_9578 (https://flic.kr/p/rnxXqH) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I cut the shape of the end using a coin as a template and a very sharp knife

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8646/16466815270_767f9faed4_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/r67Ju7)IMG_9581 (https://flic.kr/p/r67Ju7) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

Once all of the components are cut and shaped it is time to add the dye which in this case was blue

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8567/16042752234_609303a81e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/qrDijs)IMG_9583 (https://flic.kr/p/qrDijs) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

After the dye comes the suede interior and then the whole thing is glued and stitched together for this case it took 4 1/2 hours to sew but I am very slow :)

This blue is very light so I may add a few more coats to darken it a little

I have now, thanks I love to see my cases in use I don't normally read the Visconti thread too tempting especially the Homo sapiens 😊
I would be interested to see how it stands up to everyday use.

This next project is for three pens however they are 8 inches long so this is really a custom project.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8628/16658772756_a6f266fc6b_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ro5yKW)IMG_9600 (https://flic.kr/p/ro5yKW) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I made three tubes from kydex heated and rolled around a 17 mm dowel they will be wrapped in leather or suede along with the rest of the interior,
The leather is 5 mm veg tanned which once soaked in water becomes pliable enough to follow the shape of the three tubes with a little gentle persuasion.

So far so good

Using such thick leather has made things a little difficult so I have resorted to pressure

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8581/16519549029_892ab4c76e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/raM1oR)IMG_9625_1 (https://flic.kr/p/raM1oR) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

If I am still unhappy when it dries then I have some thinner leather I will make another the pens will still be protected by the kydex tubes I just liked the look of the thick leather.

MY63

So now that we have an outside leather shell the next step is to sort the interior components this will be three individual tubes which will be wrapped in leather and then fixed together.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8657/16730379201_4bf7064abd_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rupyRP)IMG_9643_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rupyRP) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

The tubes have been rolled and glued together after sanding to roughen them rather than smoothing for the glue

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8599/16544182370_8ebdea067e_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rcXg2C)IMG_9645_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rcXg2C) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I cut a piece of yellow Nappa leather to the outside diameter of each tube as they are all slightly different

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8682/16544185610_10ba58a797_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rcXgZu)IMG_9649_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rcXgZu) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I have been trying different ways to wrap inside and outside tubes I have wasted many pieces of leather trying to get to a point where I am happy.
This is my best method yet which I found by accident I now glue the outside piece first then push the inside piece through and pull it over the outside at the bottom

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8610/16730621242_8b6966b022_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/ruqNNW)IMG_9655_1 (https://flic.kr/p/ruqNNW) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I have quickly taken another picture the leather has been glued to the top outside of the tube in the past I have always glued the inside part but if the top and bottom are glued then the inside has no where to go.
I hope this makes sense.

I have been told in the past not to show how I make things as people may copy them rather than buying my work well if anyone wants to make there own version of any of my work please feel free
If you do want to have a go and have a question then I will be happy to answer it and help in any way that I can.

Thanks for looking

I have dyed the outer pieces for the three pen case the closure method is going to be by a thong wrapped around I am not sure if it should be attached to the flap or to the base.

Thanks Crazyorange and Flounder not quite sure I am up to Rolls Royce standards but that is the sort of quality I am looking for.
Getting the stitching right is very difficult but if it was perfect then it would not be hand made.
Now the edges have been dyed I think it looks better, most edges tend to be black but I like them the colour of the body

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8624/16575289688_d08910a119_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/rfGG9G)IMG_9690_1 (https://flic.kr/p/rfGG9G) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

I am thinking I may just use wax to seal the edges as edge kote will make them very shinny I don't mind shinny but it sometimes looks like plastic.

Hopefully the owner will pop in and show the special pens that will live in the case.

Thanks for looking

Michael

Ohhh yea... these will find the case very comfy.

A 3rd in Kuro will be added later this year so until then it will be just 2.

VERY excited to get my hands on this beautiful case. Thank you so much Michael for taking on this project and putting so much effort and care and craftsmanship into it.
