This is the Word. Notebooks pocket notebook in traditional camo. These notebooks are the same size as the potentially more well known Field Notes books. Because they are the same size this review will also be heavy on comparison.

These books are sold in three packs and are designed and made in the USA. A quick look at the conclusion up front. These books have pros and cons and will win over some Field Notes users but not all.

Where these books stand out the most to me might be the slightly more sophisticated internal design. Instead of the simple ruled lines it also has a small column on the left of every page with a double circle to allow for many different ways of using and notating the book with some minor help from the designer. There is no reason you couldn’t just add the same system to a field notes book but it is an added step that I don’t think many will do in a pocket notebook. It is also an interesting system that works with the Bullet Journal system I use in my primary notebook.

There are several other pros to be seen in these notebooks. They are made using acid free inks, the size will fit into many covers and accessories already on the market without needing to be altered and they have a slightly higher quality paper than Field Notes. The cons vs. the FN alternative here are that the Word. Notebooks have only 2 staples vs. the 3 in Field Notes. There are more differences that some would label pros and cons but I will leave as simply differences. The Word. book is slightly thicker, mostly due to a thicker cover. This may increase durability but will also make a slight difference in comfort when actually carrying these in a pocket.

The paper quality is hard to explain but I would say it is between the Field Notes on the lower end (about the same as Moleskine) and Scout Notes which are truly fountain pen friendly. I would say that these books are fountain pen friendly for one sided use with most pen and ink combos but not all. Below are some samples of the Word. Notebook first along with a few from Field Notes and Scout Notes.

These books come in a variety of cover styles which are basic but slightly more stylized than Field Notes in my opinion. The “Word.” logo circle has the ability to be as iconic as the simple “Field Notes” on the front of their books. In general, if you have a Field Notes book you know about what you are getting. If you don’t have either, and a thicker cover is more important than triple staple binding then I’d give the edge to Word. Notebooks because of the slightly better paper.
