my first Conway Stewart

I arrived home from work tonight to be greeted by my loving wife, my adorable two year old daughter, and a package from the bay. My first Conway Stewart. I couldn't be happier.
This is a Conway Stewart Dinkie 560. The sac is a bit crumbly and will have to be replaced. I wasn't meaning to disassemble it tonight but I just gave it a gentle tug to get a feel for what might be necessary to remove the section. I'm looking forward to doing my first resaccing.

I love my three CS pens. (My modern Wellington is my favorite pen in the collection), and I also have a 14 and a 24. I love CS materials the most. Their pens are always so pretty.

Congrats on the new find! And good luck with the floating bar assembly...it can be a pain in the tukus if it's not working correctly. Reassembling the floating lever bar in my 24 has caused me to exclaim several new and inventive curses...

I'd wait and find out a bit more about the old sac before pulling it of, sometimes these are of real collector interest and given I don't recall seeing one with Conway Stewart written on it ( not that I know much about CS ) . I'd suggest posting it on the FPB ( fountainpen board) where the Dinky expert andy Russell posts.

The floating bar assembly is working fine, so no problems there. As for the sac, it's already gone. :(

Regarding the sac, here's the answer :

"It is actually quite common to still see CS marked sacs on pens of the 50s and 60s, I believe this indicated they were either the original sac, or a replacement fitted by CS themselves or one of their approved agents. This was a good way of allowing them to know whether the pen might have been repaired by someone else in the case of a warranty claim. Obviously over the years the number of original sacs you see diminishes but I can't remember seeing a CS marked sac on a pre-war pen so it may be that marked sacs were first introduced in the 1950s. CS had a number of quality control on pens in this period, introducing something that guaranteed the quality of the sac would have been a logical step. The mintier the pen, the more likely it is to still have a CS marked sac."

It looks like you've got a very nice example of the 560 set, with an original box. I hope it writes well for you.

A resac on this beauty is easy. Please make sure to clean off the old gunk before refitting the new one. Good to know you don't have to do much to that floating pressure bar. I'm rubbish at those and my language gets worse by the second. Enjoy your lovely 'new' pen.
