Other people can add to your rep power if they believe you are contributing something of value to the forum. It is that star icon next to the thanks button. They can take away too.

I've given reps to quite a few folk and it acknowledges that I did so but it never seems to register.

No, just the admin. :)

So what is seen on the left of a post called Rep Power = how many times you have given a post rep power?

Your rep score is higher than mine.

So what is seen on the left of a post called Rep Power = how many times you have given a post rep power?
From the FAQ:

How much reputation is given? What is reputation power?

If the administrator has enabled this, the amount of reputation that each user will give (or take away if negative) is shown in the user's posts as 'Reputation Power'. The value of the reputation power is determined by the administrator and may increase over time depending on the settings they have applied.

So the rep power and rep score are not the same?

Edit: All this time I thought the green bars were related to post count.

Yes I too now understand less than I did. That is to say, I thought I understood, but then I found myself in a position of being able to understand every word Dannzeman quoted, without have a clue what it meant. I hope being clueless will not diminish my reputation.

i think I got it. Every time someone increases your reputation, it gives you a certain amount of points towards an increase in rep power. It looks like only Dan knows what that value is and you go up in levels. This, in turn, corresponds to the green bars that also go up by a value that only the admin knows. Well at least that is the way I think it works.

It would appear that in addition to pens, you are also collecting green bars. Which reminds me of the time I walked into a green bar. My face was black and blue.

How do you explain the fact that Dan has a Rep of 10 with 1 bar, and you have a Rep of 7 with 3 bars? (Man, I feel like I've fallen into a gamer forum...)

Thank you for asking the tough questions. I am beginning to think there is a metaphysical quality to it. There is an oracle behind those bars that has a witticism for each individual. How did I find out you ask? I thought that maybe clicking on them might yield some magical effect. But I did not even have to click.

Sigh. This is approaching facebook level of narcissism, so I've tried real hard to avoid this, but before we turn into a gamer forum and frag each other, TLDR:

Rep points:
- You get one bar for each 100 rep points. If I am not mistaken 10 for each green, 4 for grey, not sure about red
- You can give maximum five rep points per day and limited to once per 40 ppl to prevent backslapping
- The more rep point you have, the more rep point you can give (or take)

Now the rep power:
+1 rep power for each year of membership
+1 per 1000th post (goodness gracious!)
+1 per 1000 rep points

Actually, this is more than gamer "self-image consciousness" level; try http://forum.bodybuilding.com/faq.php?faq=repuationsystem_faq

That shows you how many gaming forums I run around in with scissors. None. I still run with scissors in this forum. Actually, it's a Dremel with the green stone on 30K RPM's in one hand and a light saber in the other, so keep your nibs safely hidden away.

The easiest way to look at is... Work on getting an equal amount of green and yellow bars. Since green and yellow makes blue; you can trade in your green and yellow bars, for blue balls. This is the quickest way I have found to increase Rep Power. Now, I'm probably minus Rep Power.
