I've always been curious why we don't see more reviews and photos of Ernest Shin's wonderful work at Hakumin Urushi Kobo. Today, I received my first pen from him: a "Skinny Pearl" in Kuro Tamenuri. I'll do a proper review, but here is a quick photo of the pen. It's very well-made.

Anyone else want to share more pictures of Ernest's work?

I just sent a Nakaya to him for a Kanji ...

I would LOVE to see a few more pics and the nib...

I know your going to do a full review, which I am looking forward too, BUT some more pen porn would be great !!!

Pen looks beautiful. Congrats.

PS.. whats the Kanji say?

That is Ernest's standard signature on his pens. I didn't get anything added to this pen. Maybe the next one.

Will upload more photos in a post soon. I have one quick shot comparing a Danitrio and Nakaya I have as well that I'll upload here.

The lighting on this is bad. I'll work on that in the future. Left to right:

Danitrio Densho - Kuro Dame
Nakaya Naka-ai - Ao Tamenuri
Hakumin Urushi Kobo Pearl - Kuro Tamenuri

Is that an Edison Pearl?

I love his stuff, would love to have him make magic on an antique pen, maybe a beat up old hooded Pelikan? My issue is I don't get along well with the Edison nibs. Have yet to find one that sings for me, ever. So for the price range I'd stick with Nakaya. But the old pens he's redone, those are stunning.

Yes, it's a skinny Edison Pearl.

I do like his work on vintage pens as well. The Raden pen especially.

Beautiful pen trhall.

They look sooooo purtty all lined up.

The depth of shine in Urushi is just memorizing

Thomas, congratulations! I really like your skinny Pearl. Nice size between a Pearl and the Pearlette.

Urushi is addicting...

Here's my shiro-tamenuri Hakumin Mina received in 2012 (apologies for the dust... try, try, try, yet not a good photographer at all!):

This pen is as scratch-free as the day I got it. Not sure how that happened, as the pen sees a lot of use.

A lot of nibs can be tamed, modified, ruined, what not. Mine was re-ground by Michael Masuyama to a sweet .20mm. Love it! But I'm partial to MM's work. And Brian's. And Ernest's urushi work is very, very good. He takes his time for a proper outcome, which can be frustrating or an exercise in patience. As Ron Zorn always quotes from The Princess Bride, "You rush a miracle man, you get bad miracles." I love my Hakumin Mina.

I did a blog post (http://peaceablewriter.wordpress.com/2012/10/23/tale17/) about the Hakumin experience, if anyone is interested.

Love yours, too, Thomas! Look forward to seeing it in person some time down the road.

Let's have more Hakumin photos! (Do we not see them because Hakumin buyers don't post in forums? Or because the pens are soooo hard to photograph if you're (like me) not a good photographer? Post 'em anyway!)

Cheers,
Julie

Stunning pens in this thread! Unfortunately, I cannot add any photos myself until right around mid-July. I was taken by Ernest's Nashi-ji finish on the Parker 51, but my pen is a custom collaboration between Edison and Hakumin Urushi Kobo. I will have to dig my Nakaya and my Danitrios out of their deep hiding places to compare. The pens are not at all alike, but all beautiful.

Such a peaceful, serene looking pen. I remember your blog post about this pen, and it gave me a really bad case of pen-want. I don't own a lovely urushi pen, yet. Perhaps there will be one in my future. Julie, of the urushi pens that I have seen, both virtual and in-person, yours is probably my most favorite. =)

Great thread. Ernest's work is really quite beautiful. I have two of the Edison pens that Ernest finished - one is a tamenuri finished Pearl bulb filler (must remember to get some pics) and my prize, an aka-ishime no kuro tamenuri Pearl which I will picture below. I absolutely love the look and feel of this red stone finish!

I have a couple of projects on the go at present with Ernest, hoping to post some pics in the coming months.

Cheers,

PS - oddly enough, unlike Tandaina's experience noted above, I find the opposite - I can't seem to get along with Nakaya nibs, but love the joWo nibs - to each their own :)

If anyone is wondering about Ernest's work, here's his website. (http://www.hakuminurushi.com)
He's very good at answering questions, and walking you through anything.

The pens are not at all alike, but all beautiful.

Yes! They are not apples to apples across Nakaya, Hakumin, Danitrio, etc. Yet all beautiful in their own right.
Look forward to your photos this summer, kimmy!

Ken: Also looking forward to seeing your photos and news of your efforts with Ernest. Awesome!

Okay, some of these pics are dusty, but figured that slightly better lit comparison photos with dust are better than dust-free dark photos, right?

- Danitrio Sho Hakkuku - Murasaki dame
- Danitrio Densho - Kuro dame
- Nakaya Naka-ai - Ao Tamenuri
- Hakumin Urushi Kobo - Edison Skinny Pearl - Kuro Tamenuri

Yes, excellent tip. But, alas, no compressed air to be found today. Next time! :)

Here's a couple of pics of three urushi pens, two of which were finished by Hakumin:

-Nakaya Naka-Ai in Heki-Tamenuri, stubbed B nib
-Edison Pearl Bulb-Filler (with clip) Tamenuri urushi finish by Ernest Shin of Hakumin Urushi Kobo. F nib.
-Edison Pearl with aka-ishime tamenuri finish bt Ernest Shin of Hakumin Urushi Kobo. Stubbed M nib.

I use one of those rubber bulb things that we photographers use to blow dust specks away from lenses, it works just fine.
That, and a piece of cloth or chamois will work great.
