Is there much difference between an uncapped, unposted M600 and a 400NN, from nib tip to barrel end? If so, which is longer?

I can write no problem (medium hands) with an unposted 400NN.

M2xx/M4xx and M6xx are all similar length bodies. The M6xx cap is longer making the pen longer when uncapped.
The M600 is a thicker body, so the M400 cap doesn't fit.

So what is the difference in length between an uncapped / unposted 400NN and a M600, nib tip to end of barrel, side by side?

400 is around 123mm and the 600 around 127.

I write with both, unposted, and I find both perfectly comfortable, but the M600 is for me the perfect size. It's not so much the length as the width. YMMV.

The M1xx/M2xx/M4xx and M6xx range was made to be used with the cap posted. Having the cap posted give the pen that bit of balance which you don't get with some of the heavy pens.

A chacun son gout, of course; I prefer my M600 unposted, partially because I find the cap works its way loose but also because I prefer a lower centre of gravity in my pens.

All this is helpful, but would be more helpful with a picture. I know there are people out there that could put the picture together quickly. I would like to know myself but I am short a 400NN.

The 400NN and the M600 are almost exactly the same length uncapped, but the M600 is a bit wider.

Excellent. Thanks reprieve. I enjoy writing with the 400NN unposted. copy width difference.

I really like the M6xx size. It feels a little bit larger in the hand, I think just because of the extra width (I do not post my pens). The 400NN is about the perfect size pen for me. The M2xx/M4xx feels too short, but the M6xx is spot on (and is therefore my favorite modern Pelikan).

Tandaina, you need a Shanghai! It is a gorgeous pen. The barrel is slightly translucent so you can see the ink sloshing round inside. I have an obsession with my tortoise Pelikans, but the Shanghai is close behind. I would like to get an Athens (http://www.nibs.com/PelikanM620Athens.htm) to match, but I haven't been able to find one at a reasonable price (yet!).

I don't know about the Athens but the Shanghai is extremely expensive on the secondary market. Like, nuts. :)

They all are, I will likely get none of the city series, despite how much I like them, they just aren't reasonable.

I got really lucky and scored mine for around $200--but that was before they became somewhat scarce. They used to regularly pop up in the FPN classifieds. I've been looking for an Athens for quite a while, but the prices are exorbitant.

Slightly off topic, but is the 400NN Pelikan's finest achievement?
