View Full Version : Tracking Slips - My little Experiment

Type40
February 28th, 2014, 11:31 PM
First let me say, Thank you all for your help and cooperation.
Second, unless you are already writing me a letter, wait a couple of weeks to see what shakes out of the postal system before sending them to me. I don't want you to pay more postage than you have to.

It will take a while for them to finish there traveling and get tabulated. I will post updates in this thread.

What I can say is that I wrote 117 slips (105 words per slip X 117 = 12,285 words).
3 slips found there way back to me before the end of the month and could be passed on again.

I also received two; have passed one along and will enclose one in a reply I am writing today. Such a great idea Type40.

One came my way and I sent it on (although I can't remember to whom I had sent it)... This reminded me of Friendship Books (and their single page cousins, friendship sheets). http://www.lettersets.com/what-is-a-friendship-book.php

I had been wishing for a way to see who was writing to who, which people were the most connected to everyone, and see if there were people who wrote to the same group but not each other. Things like that for a while but I had two issues. First was peoples personal privacy (which I respect) and a better than average chance that enough people would be willing to participate.

As InCoWriMo approached I realized that for the month of February, there was going to be a highly active nearly self-contained group of people. Solving the participation issue. By specifying only sending to other people in the InCoWriMo group I could keep it to people who are on the Forum and have a Username. This solves the personal privacy part. The last idea I had was to help with circulation, I didn't want them to hold on to the slip till they could work up a reply to me, so as you saw I had you all drop it in the next one as long as they were in the group. Increasing the turnaround times and give much more interesting data.

My original plan was to send them out to everyone I wrote to, for the first week. That way they had the most time to travel. As people started posting address I thought it would be better if I pre wrote a bunch and released them on the first. Then it turned into, if I write to everyone that I haven't had contact with before, my intro letter would introduce me to them and whoever they send it off to, would either have received an intro or already know me. That again would help with the 'What is this thing and who is it from' reactions. I also specifically didn’t mention the slip in my letters. I wanted to make sure that everyone receiving it wouldn’t need to alter their letters to accommodate it.

Before I started thinking about all this, I had checked all my supplies for February. I had a new box of stationery, a bunch of stamps, and a new package of sealing wax. I was set. Come January 31. I had run out of stamps (8 or 9 short), most of the way through my stationery, and only nubs left of my sealing wax. Oops.

Here are a couple of photos I took of my outgoing on February 1.

I used rubber bands and attached a note to each for the mail carrier. Two are labeled Domestic and one is International. I believe this is why all of my letters out on this day got postmarked in Portland Oregon, some 2 hours away, but haven't checked with anyone yet. I also added a Thank you and appreciate you note, for my mail lady.

My plan for the actual month was to take it easy and write some postcards to people outside the group, when I wasn't writing to new arrivals to the group. Here is where my plan went a bit sideways (but in a good way). Being that I mailed some 76 people on the first day. A very high percentage of them arrived as the first letter for them. This meant they didn't have anything already waiting and could reply right away. I realized this just before the flood started. A very happy flood.

Wow, that's impressive! I just happened to be going out to mail another letter or two the day I received it, so I thought I might as well sit down and write to you and send it back while I was at it. Good thing I saw your note about sending it back straight away after the end of InCoWriMo. I thought at first I'd just slip it into one of the letters I was mailing out (to Scotland, I think). It could have taken a trip across the ocean, too!

No worries. I think we all have discovered things hiding in our reply to pile (or even something incorrectly placed in the replied pile, oops) that we were sure had been taken care of already.

I received one of these (from Type40) in february and send it to The Netherlands a day after (I'm from Venezuela). It's a cool experiment. I believe the venezuelan postal service is really bad and slow... so maybe this will prove that

Hah! Dropped one in the mail to you yesterday. Opened my box and received an actual letter from you. A letter that seemed to have been on its own odyssey through the system -- rejected by my PO not once, but twice -- with Type40 diligently amending it at each return trip. What a trooper! Finally, his letter reached me. And the wax was almost intact. I shall be sure to return the favor with a long reply in the fullness of time.

Through a surprising example of scholastic solidarity, caramic_pizza's mailroom followed the fine example set forth by inkyletter's. Taking the greatest care, they spared no effort, and lots of time, to insure this slip was delivered, eventually. As a result, its total travel time completely overshadows the previous hold, slip #19 and its pathetic 59 days. It has also prompted me to add a listing for the slowest traveling time. Let’s see if any others have what it takes to unseat this shining example of reaching the destination (eventually).

Way back before I even fully worked out how I was going to run my experiment, or even that I could, I had a specific image in mind. The path each slip takes would be displayed like the nukes in War Games as they traveled around the world.

As the slips started coming in, I used a site to find the distance between two places and it showed an arcing line for each hop at a time. This only reinforced my wish to see them all together.

Every couple of weeks, or month, I would search around for a site that would take a list of all the gps data and make the animated map that I had in my head. Surely it exists already.... Yet each time I looked, I would find things that were sorta close and a lot that really weren't. I would set it aside and write more letters, till I had convinced myself again that there really should be something already made out there. Each time I failed to find something, I would toy with what it would take to do it myself. Finally (last week) I worked out a process to get what I wanted and here is the result. The first version left each line and just added more till there was a smear between the US and the UK. This version one the slip reaches its next stop, the line disappears. If you guys want the other one or some variation, let me know and I will see what I can do.

Thank you all again for your participation.

As I have about fifty letters currently waiting to be replied to and a tendency to write longer and longer letters, I am afraid that I wouldn't be able to disperse enough slips to make much of a showing.

With that said... If someone or better yet lots of other people decided to drop in their own slips, I would be more than happy to do the processing on any results that may be generated.

Things I would need to know.

Date Received (date it was delivered)
User Name (Registered user of the site. I will need this to get their address, either from my records or by PMing them or people who have corresponded with them)
Date Sent (date of Postmark)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I liked to see the different inks and handwriting on the slips. Each photo I posted was taken with a simple smart phone. I can work with anyone that would like to post a slip.

If we want to run it with the same rules I had last time, they were:

Generating a slip:
Instructions: “I am hoping you will help me in a little experiment. I am curious about all the mail we will be sending around the world this month and wanted to see what it looked like.
All I ask is that you add your information to the list on the back and drop it in to your next outgoing InCoWriMo participating letter.”
On the Back, Add a Unique identifier at the top and then on the next line start the three columns [Received Date][UserName][Sent Date]
(I made the mistake of adding the slip numbers to the side with the instructions, instead of the side that would actually be seen in a photo. Oops. :))
Write the date you are sending the slip in both the received and sent columns and your username in the center column.
Drop into your outgoing letter

What to do when you have received a slip:
On the back, add the date you received it and your user name. When you are about to finish an outgoing letter to a participating InCoWriMo FPGeek, add the date to the sent column and drop it into the envelope.

If it is no longer February:
Do any of the following: Send it to the first person on the slip, Contact them through the FPGeek Forums, Contact me through the Forums.

If I get photos of the slips, I will post them. If I just get the data from the back of the slips I will add them to a new running tally. Once they all seem to be in, I will make an animated map.

I am also open to suggestions.
