Just received this today. It is a Silver Barley solitaire 146. I bought this for 50% off of retail! It is a heavy pen but not uncomfortably so. I love the diamond in the clip-very elegant. I think my favourite part of the pen so far is the Mother of Pearl emblem. I have not decided what ink to use...yet. Please see photos of the unboxing process below.

Just a nice plain box

The pen, the diamond certificate, Polishing cloth, and stamped booklet.

Yea the MOP star is such a perfect finishing touch to that beautiful pen. I love the size of the 146 and have looked many times at the Silver Barley. They have a sale like once a year where you can get some of the MB pens from boutiques at reduced prices that let some of our dreams come within reach.

Congrats orfew on a beautiful and stunning pen!

PS one of the things that I really really like is that the section is resin. I am not a fan of metal sections at all.

The MOP star is my favourite part of the pen. The diamond is also very nice. Thanks for the comments.

Thanks very much for the comments. This is the second year I have bought something from their annual sale. On both occasions I ordered by phone and have not regretted it one bit. One nice thing they do is include a handwritten notecard (using a MB fountain pen) thanking me for the purchase.

I also like the resin section. It is practical and also a nice look. I am trying decide which ink to use. I think I have narrowed it down to 3 possibilities: Toffee Brown, Irish Green, or Lavender Purple.

mmmm Toffee Brown !!!

One other thing nice I forgot to mention, and I'm sure you know, is that you have either 4 or 6 weeks to do a nib exchange if you decide you don't like what you have.

I asked this last year during the sale. The had a Silver Barley, the one with just the cap silver and NOT the MOP star, and I did not get it as it was a fine nib. Little did I know that whatever nib came with it really didn't matter as I could take it to any local MB boutique and get it swapped out.

Yes, I figured this out last year as well. As a matter of fact I bought the sliver doue 146 at last year's sale. What you said is highly relevant. When I ordered the pen they said they had 3, one medium and two fines. However, then I was told that the medium one was not on sale, it was still full price. I figured buy the fine for 50% off and then I would have the 6 weeks (I think) to get the nib exchanged. If I do decide to swap it I might just go for an OB or BB. It is nice to have a selection of different pens with differing nib widths to play with.

Further to nib exchanges I was reading the booklet that came with my Heritage 1912 and it states that one has a full year from the time of purchase to swap the nib!

My sincere congratulations!

I went the same way.. looked at the list of available items at my boutique and this was a clear winner.
Wanted a 146 for a long time - this turned out to be a great opportunity to satisfy a crave ;)

For the first filling, I used Iroshizuku Kon-Peki - currently most-used ink of mine. Doesn't disappoint, to say the least!

Congratulations to you as well. I must say the more I look at the pen the more I like it. I love the look of the Kon-Peki, I may have to try that.

Just to stir the waters a bit, I'll cast a vote for the Lavender Purple. Hehe! But I'm sure that whatever ink you choose, it'll be a sweet combination with your lovely pen.

Congratulations. It's a truly gorgeous pen. :thumb:

I should visit my local boutique more often. Would they put some of the 'entry-level' FPs on sale?

In my experience they usually have a wide range of pens to choose from.

What's does the wording stod mean. On your cap? That same wording is on one of my nibs

No one seems to know for sure but the most common answer is it is the hallmark of the firm that assayed the material.
