i have a 140 and 400NN, and am thinking of getting a 120. between the 3, uncapped, is the 120 the shortest?

120 and 140 are identical.

It does depend on which version of the 120 you are referring to. The Merz & Krell 120 Type II from the 1970's was somewhat larger than the 1960's version. See comparison shot below (sorry for the quick camera phone pic)....
