This review is archived on my blog, The Inked Nib (http://theinkednib.com/post/23934557286/review-noodlers-purple-heart).

It’s Memorial Day. What better ink to review than Noodler’s Purple Heart? I have profound respect for our troops and particularly the ones who paid the ultimate price for the cause. Happy Memorial Day. I hope you’re using this time to reflect on sacrifice while enjoying your cookout or what have you.

Pen: Lamy 2000 (Note: the upcoming Lamy 2000 review was also completed with this ink and will feature different papers)

Paper: Norcom (USA) single subject notebook paper (page 1), Hammermill Tidal MP 20# (page 2)

This ink is a Goulet Pen Company exclusive from Noodler’s. It features George Washington on the bottle as well as two depictions of the Purple Heart award. Its special property is that it is of the “Eel” line of Noodler’s inks, designed to lubricate pistons.

I like this ink. It is generally well behaved and as it is an Eel ink, is good for my piston fillers. I also love the theme as an adopted Virginian.

I would characterize the color as a dusty purple. I would confidently use this ink in court or to sign a client letter.

The ink does favor better papers. I get show through and some feathering here (on Norcom) and on AMPAD efficiency legal pad paper.

I don’t think this ink is waterfast (it’s not — see ink form), but we will find out when I conduct a water test.

I have a feeling that this pen will be going to a different ink after this fill, but the ink begs for italic/stub treatment. I may put it in a 1.5 italic Lamy Safari. I could replace La Reine Mauve with this in my Apple Green Safari.

Ink form after water test. Note that Rome is Burning hasn’t totally turned purple. This ink is clearly not waterfast but shows some small degree of water resistance. I really doubt it would survive a soak test.

My daughter did not like this one. It was not a bright enough purple for her. She went with Pelikan Violet instead.

Nice review. This may be my favorite purple. It maybe shades toward the bluish side of purple rather than red. In my estimation, most purples tend to feature red more, so amongst the purples I've seen, this one stands out. Just a gorgeous color with very nice writing properties.

Thanks for the review of such an intriguing colour.

Is J.Herbin's Poussiere de Lune (which is also described as a dusky or dusty purple) a similar colour ?

Does anyone have experience with this ink and clear demonstrators?
I want to put it in a twsbi but I'm afraid of staining.

I have used this in a couple of different demonstrator pens and have not had any trouble with staining. There is the usual difficulty getting ink out of crevasses, but that would be true of any ink. Once all of the ink is flushed out, there is no stain on the barrel or anywhere else.

I have both Poussiere de Lune and Purple Heart. They are very similar, but I remember Purple Heart having slightly more red (It's not with me right now.) Purple Heart is closer in color to the new Diamine Grape.

I've found that Purple Heart looks very similar to the new PdL (post European regulations Reformulation), but Purple Heart is indeed more red than the old PdL.

Purple Heart should easily clean out of any pen since it is a lubricated ink.
