Yesterday I finished a fountain pen with an urushi finish called "bekkô nuri" tortoiseshell lacquer.
The barrel and section is finished with bekkô nuri, the cap in a traditional kuro roiro shiage.
The bekkô nuri is achieved by applying a strongly pigmented Japanese "sakari urushi" and cadmium yellow.Sakari Urushi is the best and most trasparent urushi harvested in the mountains of Nagano in mid Summer. After the yellow urushi has cured it is overlaid with countless layers of "sakari urushi", less transparent "kijiomi urushi" and finally with "kuro roiro urushi", the best quality black lacquer. After grinding it is polished.
Traditionally bekkô nuri is achieved by lacquering over gold leaf. Since urushi is getting brighter and more transparent, the yellow will come through much stronger
