As part of my trip to Pelikan in Peine (just outside of Hannover) we also spent a day at the Hannover Zoo. They had a 7 week old baby elephant and my girlfriend Silvia LOVES elephants. So it was an easy sell for the trip to Pelikan. These are some snapshots from my little Canon SX210is. All are shrunk to about 25% size and some are also cropped. This is just a small selection of the best of over 350 pictures that I kept. The zoo was thankfully small and very well done. It was a nice day, even if it rained for most of it.

The main focus of the zoo visit was of course the elephants. They seemed to really enjoy playing with the steel balls chained to the walls.

The elephant exhibit was based on an Indian ruins. Some of the stairs were a little too large for the baby elephants to negotiate. But as you can see where there is a will there is a way.

As usual, the little ones can always find a way to get themselves into trouble. This little one was trying to climb up a wall taller than him. I am not sure if he slipped from the top of was trying to get up from the bottom. I am also not sure if the other (older) baby elephant there caused the problem or was trying to help. Either way, he fell over backwards and landed on his back with a loud thump and a frightened baby elephant trumpet. Within seconds, a legitimate elephant stampede ensued with stomping fleet and lots of trumpeting as the entire herd rushed to surround him. They made sure that he was fine and them everything went back to normal.

Some of my best pictures were of the birds. And of course no trip to the Hannover zoo would be complete without a picture of a Pelican. Pelikan donated their birds to the zoo when they closed the factory building in Hannover and moved to Peine.

They also have some pretty nice shows. These are pictures of the water show. We got there late so could not get into the stands so we had to stand along a rail at the back of the show area. It ended up being the perfect place to be. I do not know what type of eagle that is but it was big. And it was trained to fly back and forth between the handlers swooping just over the heads of the audience. He went directly over my head. I do not know how close he was but I damn sure ducked!
