View Full Version : Single Pen Holders/case - Which do you like best?

I only have two pen cases, a 12-pen zipper case (more like 10 when you count some of the thicker pens like a Jinhao 159), and a 4-pen wrap.

But of course summer is upon us, and no longer feasible to use a jacket/vest pocket for a single pen, or to use the large interior pocket for the pen wrap, and such leaves the only place for a single pen to be the pant's pocket (loose fitting of course, and remains loose fitting even when sitting down, no tight skinny jeans here).

While that may be fine for some of my cheaper metallic or thicker pens (ie: Pilot Metropolitan, Faber-Castell BASIC, Pilot Elite "Big Cap", Jinhao X750/159), I would like to be able to have some of my lighter pens with me like the Pilot Falcon, Sheaffer Snorkel/Touchdown or my Montblanc 225, and would like to find some kind of single pen sleeve or such that prevents any kind of bending (I thought about something sort of like a cigar holder).

Was looking at this one that is basically a leather sleeve but I'm not sure if that rough looking interior of the sleeve would mark up the pens' exterior or not.

Aston Leather (tan) Pen Pouch (http://www.gouletpens.com/Aston_Leather_Tan_Pen_Pouch_p/aston-slip1-tn.htm)

Suggestions are appreciated, I don't think it would be used for anything thicker than my Platinum Century 3776 (which seems to be ever so roughly the thickest of the resin/plastic pens I have).

Taccia makes these leather cases in sizes that fit one or two pens.

http://www.goldspot.com/Taccia_pens/leather.html

Pen Chalet carries them too (you can get a 10% off code at Gourmet Pens' site).

Taccia also has one made of kimono fabric (this one has been calling to me): http://www.penboutique.com/p-11638-taccia-chirimen-kimono-1-slot-pen-wrap.aspx

Zipper cases seem a little excessive for pants pockets.

This is the 4-pen wrap I have, but it's not practical for pants usage, and I'd probably only want a single pen, as such a single sleeve that's slim and doesn't need to be unzipped or unwrapped would be ideal. (plus cloth sleeves won't be sturdy enough I don't think).

Why don't you just clip the pen to your shirt?

Pelikan Fine Leather Pen pouches are pretty good for the price. They come in 1, 2, 3 pens sizes. I have the one that takes 3 pens, I think I paid $35 for it and it's real leather and pretty high quality.

The single pen pouch looks like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71PVcdR65AL._SL1500_.jpg

There's a review of the 3-pen one here: http://unroyalwarrant.com/2013/12/17/pelikan-fine-leather-black-triple-pen-pouch-review/

It's the only pouch I use anymore after my other pouches from ebay in fake leather finally all fell apart.

Where would you clip onto a t-shirt? Most of my polos don't even have a breast pocket and the ones that do are way too small for a pen, and it's not comfortable clipping it there.

That may work, with the dividers it kind of forces some degree of support so it's not pressing down on the pens, but looks like it may be small enough to be pocketable.

If I were out shooting, this would not be an issue since I would just place it in my camera bag, but I'd like have a pocket pouch for quick outings when it's just my cloths (no jacket) in warm weather, my wallet + phone.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend what you're considering. It's not if it will break, it's when. If you insist on carrying a full size pen in your pocket, then you would want a hard case like this Aston (http://www.isellpens.com/Aston_Leather_Single_Hard_Pen_Case_p/ast-pbv1-bn.htm). The Aston pen pouch in your first post is just a sleeve to prevent scratches. The inside is the suede side of the leather, and it won't scratch the pen. It will provide no rigidity or protection against bending though.

You mention a pen for "quick outings". Two Kaweco Liliputs in the leather sleeve by Kaweco are about the same size as a Bic lighter (this actually my "quick outing" solution). You could also get a Kaweco Sport, or go crazy and get a Franklin Christoph Model 40 Pocket, with options up to a custom 18k Masuyama nib. Some of these options are less expensive than a hard case.

I already have a pocket pen, a Pilot Elite from the 70s (http://static.karlblessing.com/pens/pilotelite/capped.jpg) with a steel nib (http://static.karlblessing.com/pens/pilotelite/posted.jpg) (ie: korean made) and I have a Japanese made Elite Mini coming with a soft fine 18K nib. Both of those have metal caps that cover up most of the pen when capped (much like how the kaweco works). I already use the steel nib elite I have now for such a purpose, just not as nice on the nib as some of the others.

Also what you mentioned about the sleeve is exactly what I was wondering in terms of being rigid so a hardcase seems to be in order for any of the not-so-strong pens in those situations.

I wonder if they make anything like those metal/wood cigar holding tubes with a felt lining on the interior.

I was going to suggest a Pilot Elite, but didn't given the price. Since you have one (and another coming), I would just get a leather or felt sleeve for it (or make one).

The Elite "Big Cap" from speerbob that's korean made is about $22 as NOS. The one (Pilot Elite Mini, also from 70s, that looks exactly like the one from speerbob but with a bigger gold nib and '18K' on the barrel) with the 18K Soft fine that's coming to me was $26 (+10 shipping).

Though I'm thinking bout trying the cigar tube method, just have to find one that's roughly 50 ring gauge or smaller (a 54 or 56 seems a little to thick a tube being an inch or more across, but most seem to be no less than 6" long, longer than every pen I have), and just line it with a square of felt with some cushion on the bottom so something isn't rattling around in there.

Just don't use the aluminum (en tubo) tubes. They'll dent too easily.

I use a homemade leather sleeve for my Kaweco Sport (see below), but I have to agree with dneal. A full-size pen will, IMO, eventually yield to the stress of pants pocket wear (except maybe a pen-shaped tank such as a Rotring 600/Newton). You could look around for some plastic tubing or use a thick leather sleeve with lots of sturdiness to it. Ever thought about Kydex? All possibilities would probably result in a case that you won't find practical in your front pocket ...

The Pelikan case looks nice but would be great if it had a clip to hook on to a belt or pants waistband similar to some phone cases. That is what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for something similar, 1-2 pen capacity, light and rigid. The Onoto ones look good, rigid on the outside, soft lining on the inside. I've been giving this aluminium thing some thought. http://www.tuttostore.it/en/office-supplies/pen-holder/giorgio-fedon-figli-spa/108-p-penne-cal-1.html

Kydex is a pretty good solution it does take a little practice to get the shape that you want

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3692/13669294894_2fb4ec9ec9_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/mPUH9b)IMG_7012 (https://flic.kr/p/mPUH9b) by my0771 (https://www.flickr.com/people/47080473@N07/), on Flickr

This is the smallest one that I have made it is a Kydex cylinder with glove leather inside and kip leather on the outside it is a copy of a Japanese case but about a third of the cost, This one belongs to FPG member Crazyorange.

Size wise the Kydex is 0.8mm thick allow a couple of mm for leather I guess if your pen is 15 mm including clip then the case could be 19mm in diameter.

I have not tested one to destruction as yet but they are very strong if you want to get hold of a sheet and have a go I would be happy to talk you through the methods I use

Michael

I like the look of the Pelikan pouch. I only have one pen pouch right now and it is a Waterman 1-pen pouch that looks very similar to the Pelikan pen pouch. The only difference is that the Pelikan pouch appears to expose more of the pen on the sides (looking at the pics from the 3-pen pouch review you linked above). My Waterman pouch holds my Dupont Olympio with only 2cm of exposure near the top; the exposed sides of the Pelikan pouch in the review photos appear to be much longer than 2cm. The other thing I like about the Waterman pouch is how the flap "tucks" into a pocket on the front, so it isn't flapping about or getting bent out of shape while in a purse/bag. I can't seem to find another Waterman pen pouch, I think they are discontinued (I got mine a long time ago).

Is there another pouch similar to the Pelikan with better side protection?

There's the Franklin Christoph Penvelope 2 (http://www.franklin-christoph.com/penvelope-two.html), if you want something like that.

I have this. It's too big for a pocket IMO. I wanted it to attach to a computer bag but found the snaps opened ever time the case caught on something even a little. My only disappointing F-C product. But may work for others. I do have the F-C single pen sleeves and like them but they are a soft case and would not prevent bending.

It is too big for a pocket, but that response was to a poster who wanted something like the Pelikan but with a belt loop.

Those are some cool choices. I really like the neck loop one. I might get that one.

The neck loop one seems rather interesting and effective (ie: in an area least likely to encounter stress, etc).
