Hullo,

I joined up yesterday and have posted in the new members section.

Some of the regulars were kind enough to ask to see some snaps of some of my pens. I made numerous attempts to upload pictures on that thread without success, so I am trying here, but again with success. I cannot find any reference to the size limits for pictures; I have reduced my test file to 56kB; surely that's not too big?

Anyway it will not upload.

Can anybody advise?

Thanks

Cob

Use the go advanced button at the bottom, select attachemnts and a manage attachments window will open (frequently behind your current window) selct, upload, and when done select "Insert Inline" and the preview to make sure they appear.

While I don't recommend it, files over 1MB will post that way. I try to keep mine in the 250-500k range, less if I am not trying to show detail.

Yes, thanks. I did exactly as you say, selected the attachment, clicked "Upload" and nothing happened!

Best,

Well,

No need for an apology, not your fault of course.

As I said, I press "upload" and it does not 'do what it says on the tin.'

Well, we really like pen pictures, so I managed to find my more detailed instructions:

...To add a picture, step 1 is to hit the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom right of the page.
Then click the paperclip "attachments" on the top row fourth from the end.
A Manage Attachments window will pop up (frequently behind the window you are looking at).
On that page, click the green "+ Add Files" plus button in the top right corner.
Then click the "Browse" button and select the image for posting.
Then hit the "Upload" button directly under the selected file location.
A little thinking icon will appear briefly, and when the upload is complete your picture shows up both in the upper "Home" window of uploaded files and the lower "Attachments" window.
You do that for as many pictures as you want to add.
Then you click the "Insert Inline" button and *poof* it appears in your post.
Don't forget to click the done button afterwards or that screen will lurk around in the background making fun of your other windows.
I then suggest you try the "Preview Post" button next and your post as it will appear shows up above where you are typing.
If everything looks OK you press "Submit Reply" or "Submit New Thread" [and] do a little happy dance.

Yes, thanks, but it's exactly what I did before. Now trying again...

Wait for it...

Yes! The same result = no result. Nothing happens - no "thinking icon" appears.

Ho hum.

Thanks for trying anyway.

I use flickr - copy and paste bb code by go advance and pasting the bb code to the resulting post window and preview the result and submit reply.

Thanks very much. Trying now. No I'm not. What is the "Resulting Post Window" and where is it. Second Flickr has changed drastically since I last used it - I cannot find any codes/links or whatever; one used to be able to select for Bulletin Board etc., all that has now disappeared.

That's the link for the picture of three Grey Swans! Yes - I know they look blue (I understand the camera about as much as I understand posting here (note the umpteen edits, because usually when I press edit I get a blank page with a title that will not let me type. I have found it works about once in four attempts. This time I am lucky!

Thanks again.

Thank you; now all I have to do is press the same buttons (er, I did I think).

Could it be a browser problem or does this forum not like Windows 8 perhaps,

Best wishes,

on the right side of your page in flickr below the preview pane there is a star a quatation and a box with an arrow pointing to the upper right
click on the box
another box will open with social links
below that is a box to size the photo and below that is link html and bbcode - chose bbcode and copy the resulting highlighted code - go to the fpg board click on go advanced and paste the code there and then preview it = if ok post quick reply.

hope this helps

Thank you; I have found the problem; this forum does not agree with the Chrome Browser; I have opened up in IE and everything worked - I could post a reply first time - hurrah, and I have uploaded photos in the original thread in the new members section.

Thank you for your help and for the pointers to solving the Flickr mystery, though I must say that one would expect such sites as Flickr to become more user-friendly as the years pass rather than the reverse. Too busy with silly links to Facebook and Twitter I suppose (ugh!) [Edit] In fact I cannot find the links in Flickr you mention though it doesn't matter for this forum any more. I have the links you mentioned first, then there's a box "add a comment" then "info" "also in" and "tags" after this there's stuff about my camera.

Best of luck.

This "picture" is in response to a request from RuiFromUK.

Apologies for the quality; stupid camera cannot even recognise grey with its silly flash. Without flash, we're looking at DTs...

I'll let you know when I get the Leica I always dream about.

Best wishes

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I always love seeing Mabie Todd's Swan beauties.

Sometimes I find it easier to photograph it on a sunny day, difficult in UK I know, but without direct sunlight on the pens to avoid glare. To get the right colour balance I use Photoshop Elements, the cheaper version, but there are other graphics software that can be used for this purpose including public domain products.

But eh who is talking here? As Jeph and others can attest I very seldom post any pictures.

The good news is that I am busy building (very slowly, I have just gone past the planning stage) a small pen display stand using an ex Armagnac bottle box. When it is ready I'll post some Swan pictures.

I was wondering the other day what the collective noun is for a group of Swans; Wikipedia tells me that there are 12 collective nouns.

For the following group I have chosen "A sownder of Swans" though the eyedropper on the left of the picture may be an interloper, though it does have a nice No 3 Swan nib.

Again apologies for the photograph; my Ricoh camera is rubbish - sorry!

Wow Cob. You are making me jealous. A very respectable set of Swans.

If you are coming to the Coal Hole on Saturday why don't you bring some of them with you? I am taking some with me as well.

Let's see ... ah yes: that's a very pleasing lamentation of Swans you have there!

In my experience, "squabble" would fit the bill a lot better.

Here's Wiki:

Swans
bank (on the ground)
bevy
drift
eyrar
flight
game
herd
lamentation (fanciful)
sownder
team
wedge (in flight)
whiting

Actually Lamentation is about right - on seeing one's bank statement after buying too many of them!

All the best
