HisNibs.com update -- Crystal, Porcelain and Pocket Rockets
June 8th, 2012

Greetings everyone,

I hesitated about introducing the Monteverde Artista Crystal line of demonstrator fountain pens in this update, as only two of the four 'colors' are currently available (the other two are backordered until probably the first week of July). However, as I've already been sitting on stock of the Lime Green and Pink for a couple of weeks...why wait?

Also new this time are two models from the Jinhao Porcelain series -- the Dragon and the Sailboat.

On the re-stocking front, I think many of you will be pleased to know that both the Jinhao Stealth Pocket Rocket and the Lanbitou Flighter Pocket Rocket have returned -- as well as the Wing Sung 840 Salmon Crest and the Conklin Crescents.

The Jinhao Pearl Panels and Monteverde Poquito Stylus pens, introduced in the last newsletter, have been a great success. I still have some stock of both, if you missed your chance the first go-round.

As this newsletter goes out to a mailing list of thousands of customers (July marks our 15th year of business), please understand if there's a delay in answering your email queries or orders after one of these is sent. We will respond in order received and as soon as possible!

Monteverde Artista Crystal demonstrators

All hail the return of the demonstrator! Almost from the first days of the fountain pen, one of the most sought-after additions to a collection was the pen salesman's demonstrator pen. These were typically pens that were partially, or fully transparent...used by a fountain pen salesman to demonstrate the inner workings of the particular pen model that was being sold. Later, pen companies began producing demonstrators -- usually in very small quantities or as limited editions -- especially for the collecting market. Consequently, these were often sold at a premium.

We've sold the Monteverde Artista -- a clear, transparent demonstrator for a number of years. In fact, it really led the way for the subsequent and current crop of demonstrators produced by many other pen manufacturers. Now, this extremely popular pen has been renamed the Artista Crystal and been joined by three lightly-colored companion demonstrators.

Jinhao Porcelain series

http://www.hisnibs.com/JinhaoPorcelainCappedPair_small.jpg

The Jinhao Porcelain series features full-sized pens, measuring 5-3/8" capped, 6-3/4" posted and 4-7/8" with cap held aside.

Although I plan on offering additional artwork in the future, the first two entries are the Dragon and the Sailboat.

Jinhao Stealth Pocket Rocket

The pen measures a scant 3-3/4" capped, an eminently comfortable 5" posted and a virtually unusable 3-1/4" with cap held aside.

Removing the slip cap reveals the hooded nib, which is only available in a western fine (would you expect a broad nib on a pen of this size?) and knurled finger-pads on the section, which are a thoughtful addition on a slim pen such as this.

Lanbitou Flighter Pocket Rocket

http://www.hisnibs.com/LanbitouPocketRocketSilverMain_small.jpg

Somewhat reminiscent of the best-selling Speeno pen I carried years ago (sorry, this hasn't been available for several years), the Pocket Rocket is a pen that will fit anywhere, and perfect for those times when a sequestered fountain pen is the only way to go.

Wing Sung 840 Salmon Crest

I'm taking a liberty in calling this pen a Crest, but that's so obviously what it is trying to copy in design...the iconic Sheaffer Crest.

Conklin Crescent

"I just received my pen. I see why it is such a popular pen! Thanks."
V. T., Aurora, Canada

"Hi Norman. Thanks for another fine pen. The Conklin Crescent "Halloween" fountain pen arrived today and its a real jewel with its engraved crescent filler, Mark Twain's signature on the cap band and the half moon breather hole on the nib. Its a smooth writer even on rough inexpensive note paper. I'm sure its going to be one of my favorite every day pens. Also, thanks for the personal note."
KFG Columbus, OH

"Got the Conklin Black Chased! Wow! What a beautiful look it has for a black pen! Even better than the old as far as I'm concerned. And, thanks so much for recommending the medium nib which writes like a fine. It is a perfect fine nib for me. And I'm sure you must have "tweaked" it for it writes a nice, smooth, wet line. Filled it with Noodler's Bulletproof Black.....fantastic! I can see why this one is so popular. Pictures don't really show the depth of the chasing: like encased in acrylic! I appreciate your personal service and communication! I'm really enjoying the pen!"
M. B., Springfield, LA

Jinhao Pearl Panels

"What a great pen design Norman. As much as I like the mother-of-pearl panels, I find that I'm drawn just as much to the pearl ones. You can't really see it in your photographs, but they are iridescent as well. I find it to be a very comfortable pen to use, whether I post the cap or not (I love that it screws on both ends!). Oh, and writes great too! I've come to expect that from pens from His Nibs.com."
C. F., St. Augustine, FL

"Hi Norman!, I received my Pearl Panels pen and wow does it write like butter!, the kind I can spread on my paper. I love it!"
D. S., Canoga Park, CA

"Hi Norman. What a magnificent design and writer! As you may remember, I also have the Pearl Windows pen, and am amazed at the quality of these pens for such a small price. Like all the pens I've ordered from you over the years, it writes like a dream. Whatever you do to nibs before you send them out, really does the trick! It looks like I have to order another one for myself...as my wife has already laid claim to this one. Thanks again for the care you show and for bringing these great designs to the fountain pen community."
P. D., Los Angeles, CA

http://www.slate.com/content/dam/slate/articles/arts/design/2012/05/paperclip/120521_Design_Paperclip_topimage.jpg.CROP.article5 68-large.jpg

Believe it or not, a fascinating article from Slate magazine about the design and longevity of the paperclip...

"But if the paper clip can be a symbol for endless drudgery, it can also be twisted, pulled apart, and used as a tool. And in this capacity, many of the practices to which it is best suited are the opposite of the commercially productive, sanitary, and morally meaningless act of clipping together papers. Paper clips can be used to pick locks, clean under fingernails, and hack into phones. Straightened out, they are used by office workers to distract themselves from the monotony of their intended use."
